I'm not a huge fan of this design....not sure why there are 2 huge, useless towers on the building that resemble the equally useless towers on grant macewan. It's too...I don't know...too much cement and metal much like everything else in Edmonton, has no unique charm or character. They need to do with this what they did with the Art Gallery, get in a young architect or student who still has visions of true creation and grandeur.
Also...what's going to happen to the Collesium area? Uh-oh...
If a new rink is built, it really should be Olympic size, i.e. 210' long and 98' wide. The NHL standardisation had made all rinks around the league too similar and thus stale. There really isn't any true home ice advantage like the old Boston Garden or Buffalo Auditorium; those small rinks gave their respective home teams unique advantages.
This arena concept will be like everything else planned for Edmonton. IT JUST WON'T HAPPEN! Over the years i've seen renderings for a fantstic downtown market. A shopping/market area along the N. Sask just below downtown. An expanded Rice Howard Way. Covered escalators from the river valley to downtown. A world class park area east of the convention centre along the river. The damn list goes on and on. If this arena happens and that's a big if, it won't look even close to this computer rendering
I like the design, but to have outdoor shops underneath the rink seems to crowded. I think more land is needed to spread out the ammenities and the roads will have to be widened surrounding the facility. And if it can be close to the LRT, then transportation shouldn't be a big issue.
Well just on the topic of parking... I was recently in Washington DC and walked past the Capitals' arena, Verizon Center, right smack in the middle of downtown DC. There's an underground parkade but the majority of fans get to the games via subway. I expect that's the intention for the new arena as well...and that's fine by me. The last thing we need is more traffic. It'd take you 3 hours to get out of the downtown core if there was lots of parking onsite.
Interesting or not I have two questions. 1. who's going to pay for this? 2. where's the parking going to be? on the roof? Don't get me wrong it's a very nice design but that area of down town is not as large as we think it is.
@PeeWee6607 iv done some research and ive learned that a group called katz group are asking edmoton to give 100mill dollars for a new arena and #2 is the parking probably underground they arnt sure ether underground or land parking and the arena is gonna be huge its probably gonna be 2x the size of rexall
Not too sure how I feel about this. First though, this is the best time to build with labour and construction costs way down (including metal). Also properly placed window can actually do a lot to increase the efficiency of a building. It seems a little squished right off the street though. Can you imagine thousands of people pouring out into that tiny space? It would also eliminate any possibility of tailgate parties, or pre and post game celebrations as sometimes seen at the current location
I think the proposed location would be the biggest problem. I love the shape of the arena and it seems really original, but the $300 million valuation seems a bit low for something that extravagant. Said and done, I wouldn't be surprised if it will be atleast double the cost especially with the cost of metals.
Interesting concept. Dub does interesting things. I don't even want to know how they intend to heat all that window space. From many standpoints is not well thought out. Dub should practise in a city that's climate suits his ideas.......
holy shit that thing looks horrendous!
