There seems to be something missing from his pitching motion. You know, as he's getting set up, he usually bends down towards the ground and then comes back up slowly. Why he does that, I don't know.
@crzybrunette818 bs.... asking a man to changer his number mid way through an epic career like his would be like saying "hey can we just not pay you this and use ur house to clean jock straps?"
@isenhart010 White hat may be special third jersey type shenanigans. And yes, the number is retired throughout baseball; however players like Mariano (And Mo Vaughn when he was still playing) were still allowed to wear it. When Mo retires, there won't be another #42 in baseball again.
wow... nice to see they still use the same calls as in MLB The Show 07! "So 1-2-3 go the Bombers." or "Who else? Mariano Rivera?". Would it kill them to record some new stuff, just for a change? Game's still worth it, tho... lol
@JoeyBagODonuts612 I'm gonna have to agree with you. He's a Yankee that I actually kinda respect, & I believe he's a great closer. Even though Trevor Hoffman is the all-time saves leader, it doesn't mean he's the best (what are these ppl thinking?) You know what they say... it's quality, not quantity. 8)
@TopTenCrew Actually it does. He has more saves with fewer pitches and has been more consistently dominant over a longer period of time than any other closer in baseball history. Eckersly is easily in the top 5, but he isn't the best.
@TopTenCrew Winning an MVP doesn't make someone the greatest player from that position. It just means they had a great season. He only had 80 innings pitched that year and only a 3.0 WAR. He flat out should not have won the MVP. Eckersley's career stats are thus: 3.50 ERA and 390 saves (19 avg). Rivera: 2.21 ERA and 603 saves. There is no argument. Rivera is simply better. Unless he implodes for some reason before he retires, he is and will remain the greatest closer to ever put on a jersey.
haha, okay, so having the most saves doesn't make you better either. MVP across all of baseball is better than having most saves in what is really a useless position. Eck > Mo. Sorry to break it to you.
@TopTenCrew Having the most saves in a position where that is your only job makes saves important. Winning an MVP doesn't make a player great i.e. Pudge Rodriguez, Jimmy Rollins, Justin Morneau, Cal Ripken Jr. Being an MVP means that you were great in one season, not great for your career. That's not that hard to understand. Rivera's career stats are better and Eckersley played 6 more seasons than he has.
@TopTenCrew He was the MVP of the American league. There is no MVP for all of baseball. You just proved you are a pink hatter. The closer is extremely important. If your team can't close out games, you won't win many. This was proven last year by the San Francisco Giants. they didn't have anyone tearing the cover off the ball, but they had an elite closer who closed out a little more than half the games they won in the season. If Brian Wilson isn't the closer, they don't win the world series.
@TopTenCrew The Giants won because of pitching. They played the most one run games of any team, AL or NL. If Brian Wilson isn't as good as he is, they don't win as many games, don't get into the playoffs, don't win the World Series. I should know, I'm a Giants fan. 1 MVP in 24 years is not better than the all time saves record. Eckersley was great from 1988-1992. But after the MVP in '93, he had only one season with an ERA under 3.91 and only made the playoffs once until his retirement.
@TopTenCrew Meanwhile, since he became the NYY closer, Rivera has had an ERA over 2.34 3 times. 18 seasons; 15 with an ERA at or under 2.34. That kind of sustained dominance in the closer position is unprecedented. You haven't given any compelling reasons why you're right, you just keep saying that you're right. Eckersley was an amazing closer from 1988-1992. Rivera has been an amazing closer since 1996. One MVP award and 5 great seasons does not make Eckersley the greatest.
@TopTenCrew There have been other closers to win the MVP i.e. Willie Hernandez and Jim Konstanty, Are they the greatest closers of all time as well? Just because he was the last pitcher to do it doesn't mean he is the only one or will be the last.
@TopTenCrew How is he overrated though? Getting an MVP means that you were the best for one season, not a career. Don't call me kiddo. I guarantee I'm older than you.
@TyphonandFafnir pujols is the best hitter. relax. a street hasn't pitched a complete season in like two years. you don't know what you are talking about.
