I know the place is bullcrap compared to its former state, but I've made pilgrimages here with my bro just because you guys vidcasted this. Yes. I snapped pictures like an moronic tourist boy. Yes. I even went into the girly stuffed animal shops. Even with all that, it was awesome as hell.
that's because there aren't many Japanese/Korean people in SF. Chinatown won't survive either if the population of Chinese people are only 1% of the city.
I remember a talk I had with my girlfriends grandpa about Japanese Americans and the future of J-Town. He said "the kids grow up to become doctors teachers and lawyers, they don't want to follow in our foot steps. We are dinosaurs, And who could blame them for wanting more" then he smiled.
Yet it's pretty close to the truth. I wasn't saying that to be racist, I was saying that because the majority of people in that store were White. And if it's racist, your theory of racism is really sensitive.
Jewish company that took over miyako mall trying to kick out all the tenants. They are increasing the bills. One restaurant is paying $30,000 for rent now. All the restaurants are now paying at least $500 more. I wonder how much longer the tenants can survive there. :(
Unless you're some rich tycoon who can afford to buy the area, I doubt it. It doesn't seem like many people care about preserving this place anymore, everything is so rundown and pretty nasty looking.
It's funny how a San Francisco tourist brochure I read hailed J-Town as a "shopping center right out of Tokyo's Ginza", but in reality it's more like the slums of Japan's red light districts.
Man this video was depressing. I would have loved to live there when it was a thriving community to practice Japanese, now it's just been turned into a big otaku haven. I'd go there when the cherry blossoms were in bloom, but I have one in my own yard.
Yeah, it is pretty damn depressing when you're actually there, one or two blocks and it's called Japan Town, there's more people that are non-Japanese there than actual Japanese people.
i like to go there, i eat at osaka ya and go to the model shop down stairs. it is also the only place to buy mild sevens in northbay. i agree that there is too many anime-otaku's running around. they stink up the place and run around playing ultra-man or cowboy bebop. i know there is much more to japanese culture that anime and sake.cool vid. peace
I agree with Wondercast (even though this is a month last response). The best event to attend in J-Town is the Cherry Blossom Festival. It is small. I remember when I was little this was a thriving community. It's different than the past, but worth a look if you're a tourist. You can also see Chinatown, Little Saigon, Russian District, Castro and more!
Ahhh Japantown... I love that place. ^^ love going there all the time. Kinda scared since there've been shooting there lately. Yeah the Kinokuniya bookstore is expensive. :T I just go buy my stuff during the conventions when they have HUGE-ASS sales hehe

And imagine...it was once a couple dozen blocks of Japanese tenants that's now reduced to a block or so of shit.

Isn't there something that can be done?

Is true. I go to japantown to do my shopping once a month, and it seems pretty run down. I hate to see it go because I have good memories.

not really, maybe in the 1940's, but not right now, unless it's Cherry Blossom season.
