This is great. As an aside I have to say how unusual it is to hear an American in media actually asking intelligent questions. What happened to the USA? It really is quite frightening these days.
Oh my gosh! Thank you so very much for posting this! I've been trying to download it from the NPR website, but it's an incompatible file for my computer, so I haven't been able to listen to it in ages! Thanks!
In Jeremy's petition June Wyndham Davies wrote in the comments that she implored BAFTA to nominate JB for an award during the last year of his life. She was ignored.
This explains why BAFTA has blackballed Jeremy. He fought with the writers and directors to keep the stories true to the Canon. He stepped on some prominent toes possibly made some lifelong enemies as well. People like that have long memories. Thank you so much for posting this. It is a revelation!
@SherlockOnBrain: You are most welcome, and thank you for the insights. David Stuart Davies described Brett as a perfectionist in Bending the Willow; when it came to Holmes and the scripts he insisted on keeping to Doyle's words, not compromise them with unnecessary rewrites...today we can enjoy the results of his tireless efforts.
@macolleague Haven't had the opportunity to read "Bending the Willow". I'm waiting for my copy of the new 2010 edition to arrive. The previous edition is way out of my price range; so this information (about his work habits) is quite new to me. However it comes as no surprise that he was a perfectionist, considering the caliber of his performances. Thank you again!
@SherlockOnBrain: I'd heard they were going to be publishing an updated edition of "...Willow." Will have to keep my eyes open for it. When I'm home on holiday break, I am hoping to upload a rare recording of "The Life & Death of Sherlock Holmes" he did with Edward Hardwicke. (allow me to shamelessly solicit your subscription, should you be interested...) Cheers, m'coll
@SherlockOnBrain: Oh thank you, darling - I'd post to you directly, but you're confoundingly "unavailable." Anyway, do stop by; will have something new up for you before long. xo
@SherlockOnBrain For years I've been wondering WHY Jeremy had never got an award. What you tell us is perhaps an explanation for this incredible oversight. I've always thought he had powerful ennemies but could not figure out WHO.
Great, intelligent questions to a pure genius. I was fortunate enough to meet Mr Brett several times during the late eighties and I can confidently say, if I live to be a hundred, that I will never meet a better gentleman. 'You Know Who' probably killed him and yet J.B. had the artistic integrity to fight for him, tooth and nail. A BAFTA means nothing - Jeremy Brett will 'live' for ever.
hey, thanks so much for posting this. So lovely to hear him talking about the part, the experience and his loss. I enjoyed Jeremy playing Holmes. I have read all the Holmes stories and they came to life so much with Brett's portrayal, so rich and true.
i cannot express how grateful I am for you posting this rare and valuable interview with Jeremy Brett. I recently saw Granada Production of Sherlock Holmes and saw life being breathed into the greatest detective in the literary world. Having a glimpse of the brilliant man behind the face of Sherlock Holmes was a wonderful treat.
My god THANK YOU!!!THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS!!!!! Amazing to hear him like this...truly I'm grateful to you for posting this rare jewel :)

@jacksawild NPR is still doing a great job. Maybe that's why Congress wants to de-fund them?
