No it wasn't! It was based on a children's book "The Fifteenth Pelican" and Sister Bertrille weighs only 90 lbs., thus she can fly when her stiffly starched winglike cornette catches a strong breeze! She has no powers,it's just aerodynamics!
It's too late now, but it would have been rather funny to have Shelley Morrison, on one episode of "Will and Grace" to play both Rosario AND Sr Sixto, and Sr Sixto comes to visit Rosario in New York. Imagine the language hijinks that would have ensued...
I remember this episode! The old nun was sick, and from Holland, and all she wanted was snowfall, which is unheard of in most of Puerto Rico. So, Sr Berrille seeds the clouds.
I also remember the episode where Sr Bertrille and the nuns replace the blower to the Pipe organ with a vacuum cleaner motor and the resulting high pitch shatters Mother Superior's glasses.
"Hey, Joe, give me another toke on that doob" (long toke). "Now, here's this crazy idea I had" (passes doob along). "We got this nun, see, and she can fuckin' fly".
Joe sucks in some doob, and exhales. "Man, that is the funniest thing I ever heard. Man, you are killing me! And this shit is really premo! Here, man, here's a fuckin' check for $1,000,000,000, go make some flyin' nun!"
Anything that came out of Screen Gems in the 1960s was manly fantasy shows. Sally, said it best herself that show would have still been a hit without having a nun who can fly!
@JackHauss it's fantastic show, I watched everyday - it's a cute, funny. wholesome show - I enjoyed it -- she flies because she's 90 lbs. and her wing-like wimple gets her airborne. Have you no imagination?
What Sally hated about the Flying Nun , being put on wires, being in the air. I am not certain in how they did it, but she is really in the air not done by special effects.
thanks very much Please keep on unload for next episode

A flying nun but she hasn't got her wings and halo? Isn't being an angel a prerequisite to be a nun?

Even more incredible than a flying nun ... here we have a NORWEGIAN nun. "Sister Olav" indeed. And a totally English-speaking Puerto Rico.

jackhauss, I believe the show was very loosely based on St. Joseph Cupertino the flying/levitating Priest.

-during the show pitch-
"It'll be a show about nuns doing ever so virtuous charities!"
"Alright, but what's the catch?"
"What? There's no catch, it'll just be a show about nuns..."
"Nothing?"
"No, I think just nuns going about their daily lives will be very interesting!"
"mmmm...I see... okay, well just sign here and here and we'll... work with it."
"Cool! Can't wait!"

The flying nun, the most bizarre TV show ever created. I mean how the freak they ever came up with this is beyond me.
