Shit man. Kaworu was everything Shinji needed. Even more than Asuka. He's got the smiles that Shinji needs and the friendship that Shinji could trust on and also accepts him, likes him and interested in him that made Shinji feel that he was worth something maybe at least once in his life. It's not gay but he did not step on any of Shinji's comfort zones. If he hadn't died, he would have cured Shinji out of his depression in time. And he had to kill him himself. Wow.
This is thus also a deconstruction of the obsessive, masturbatory fan shipping of romances and sexualities that surrounds anime and fiction generally. To obsess over totally pretend, fictive love affairs and fantasise about idealised, perfect (in this case) bishy relationships between favourite characters (not human people) is as much an flat simulacrum of love as Shinji's love for the angel Kaworu.
That having been said, I totally go in for Shinji/Kaworu. I just know why it's so appealing.

However, more relevantly, a large part of the reason behind the Kaworu/Shinji love affair, in the context of the show, grows from the fact that Kaworu is not a human person, but Shinji's desperation for a humanly impossible complete love and acceptance makes him fall for Kaworu as he does.
Shinji is obviously bisexual. Kaworu is a form of Tabris, but he was male. He wasn't gay, either. The best answer is "He wasn't a homosexual. He was a Shinji-sexual." XD
