Stevie's producer, Clarence Paul, cut the instrumental tracks for this song in the early fall of 1963, and by the time they got around to recording Stevie's vocals to the track at the end of the year, Stevie's voice was already changing, and the tracks had been recorded in a higher note for Stevie now. That's why Stevie sounds so different because he was straining his voice to a higher track note. But he still got through it and he did well even though the song or the album didn't do well.
