I saw a museum of corpses before on a vacation in Mexico Kinda freaked me out I didn`t even wanna go in my parents read about in our travel guide and the travel agent recomended it! :/ Also its not like I needed to sleep.......
This church is somewhere in the south of Italy if i recal. You can visit it not very frequently. But appearently in those areas it was custom as villagers to be buried together with the other dead in a crypt under the churchs but because of some unike weather conditions the rotting process never occured for many of the buried people and they are mummified instead. And many of the corpses are buried standing in an alcove very maccabre if i say so myself.
@Zhyperos I've been inside ancient catacombs in Paris and Romes before. The smell itself is actually not that bad. The smell would be of a typical, moist cave smell with hints of fungus and algae growing. I think the smells aren't bad because the body has long rotted away and as such, are no longer capable of producing putrid odor.
Now imagine the smell, say 900 hundred years ago when these bodies were freshly buried and they were en masse? It would be foul.
@amsinin These catacombs are in Palermo, Sicily. Back in the days wealthy people used to hang their dead up on the walls of these catacombs all dressed neat so they could go check em out once in a while. You can still go visit down there. The place is Catacombe Cappuccini - Palermo
