Red Claw Crab eating algea

do these crabs kill plants/animals?? i have a river tank with a waterfall and everything and i have a few newts too. i REALLY want a crab but i dont know if theyll hurt the other stuff? please reply! :[

@Brutaxilos I'm not sure how they will be with newts. If you want them to live good lives they need brackish water. I've never kept newts so I don't know what they need. I don't think the crabs would mess with the newts as newts are well larger than the crabs. If you keep them well fed they shouldn't bother anything. They may nip at a fish now and then, but they're usually good if they are kept full.

i Bought Mine 2 days ago.and i put it in with my pleco and goldfishes. like for 3 days.and then i realized they need land so i just put him in a little tank with rocks so he can go on land and half water

I Threw a few algae wafers in the tank every night, enough to make sure all the herbivores/scavengers got a piece. I put some on the floating plastic plants because the crabs frequently went up there.

I had guppys, some catfish, shrimp, crayfish, and 2 fiddler crabs.

Question: Around the time you crab died, did it seem like he was fine one day and suddenly very bad the next day?

Hey erm i just got two to day really cute but what do i do can i have a couple of headstart pointers i got a filter an food and something they can get to land for but anything else that will please them ?#

Just as long as they cant escape from the tank, make sure there are no holes or they will.

i've been reading up on them, but i hear most keep them in fresh water instead of brackish, with no problem

Mine are in a normal freshwater tank, just as long as they have access to land they should be good. and keep them well fed or they will grab a fish.

@OttoVonBacon ah this is the cause for death. They can tolerate fresh water for 2 to 3 months then they slowly die, creeping death as it's called.

I didnt know they could go on land are they okay in an aquarium that has no land?

They will not survive for long in an aquarium that has no area for them to go onto land.
