  • Regarding written Welsh, considering that the Roman lettering we use now, was there a traditional writing system for Welsh that didn't use ABCDEFG etc?

  • @DemstarAus Yes, it is called the Coelbren Alphabet. Iolo Morgannwg wrote a lot about it in the 18th century. His work was declared a forgery by Unionist academics in an attempt to rubbish Welsh claims to a civilized history. However, it is impossible that he made this alphabet up considering Welsh writers wrote about it between the 12th-17th centuries, before Iolo was born and it is found on stones across Wales, Europe and America. It is an area crying out for research. Look into it.

  • Blah. I can pronounce Welsh pretty fluently, now I just need to learn the damn thing.

  • Maybe it's just me, but a guy who fluently speaks another language, especially one that isn't at all common, is automatically ten times cuter. I wish this were heard more in America. You tube and occasionally BBC are our only chance.

  • I feel like I'm listening to swedish, though it's hardly similar.

    sounds lovely, though :)

  • Wales should be an independent country. The horrible English people will always try to destroy your beautiful country, language and people. Don't let them do this - Vota for independence.

  • Ydw... Cymraeg a Sbaeneg oedd fy ngradd i yn Aberystwyth ac 'El de gales' fyddai fy nisgyblion yn fy ngalw i pan o'n i'n dysgu yn Sbaen. O leia ar ol blwyddyn ro'n nhw'n gwybod ble mae Cymru a bod hi ddim yn rhan o Loegr!

  • man lyfli clywed cymraeg ar youtube..

  • Da iawn bychan!

    So ydych chi'n Americanoedd?

  • Diolch yn fawr, or, as we say in Cornwall, mur ras deugh-why.

  • it is not at all like english. the languages have literally nothing in common. french, spanish, italian and german have much more in common with english.

d'win dod o new jersey. d'win byw a new jersey, usa. o ble o chin dod? dwi'n dysgu cymraeg. and it is very very hard.

  • tis true! Language wise english doesn't have anything in common with welsh and the closest language to english is probably french id not some other germanic language(owing to us having so much french in our language)

  • nimuroji,

French isn't Germanic its Romance along with Spanish, Portuguese & Italian closest language to English would be German or Dutch

Google Image Search Indo-European Language Tree.

And not everybody in england is from Anglo Saxon decent, I know Kernow and Northumberland and Cumbria mainly aren't.

  • I know that french is a romance and english is german but english was invaded by the normans and was for a long time ruled by the norman-french resulting in a very large absorption of their language into english. Grammar wise it isn't french at all but vocab wise we share a lot. I guess that is what I meant.

  • da iawn ti wyt ti'n gwbwl rhugl . ymlaen i'r brifysol. cer i aberystwyth.

  • hmm :/ if i understood that, id write something welsh here..

but i guess its okay, coz im not welsh. (: x

  • I feel ashamed I can only understand about 50% of what your saying.I left Wales about 6 years ago and I could speak it almost fluently back then. But whenever I go back I usually pick up some of the lingo again. Hoping to make it fluent again.

  • The accent sounds really British

  • technically.. he is british! cause wales is in britain !

  • Re Megiwms:

To those putting thumbs down on his remark, he's right, in a good way: Britain is a Welsh word, Britain was Britain (Prydain) before the English (Anglo-Saxons)arrived, and technically the English are not British!

    Evan Owen

  • britain isnt a welsh word, its derived from either greek or latin

  • Da iawn ti, ti'n gwrol iawn. dwin cytuno efo chi pan ti'n deud dysgu cymraeg yn gwneud teimlo cymreig yn hollol dysgwr cymraeg ydw i hefyd. dwi'n garu yr leinau bach dan pob geir. Dim geiriadur gymraeg am FireFox eto.

  • omg da iawn! neis i glywed cymraeg ar youtube lol

  • Yes I dooo

I framed the map and stuck loads of photos round it as a border :)

  • Woo Cymraeg =)

  • I don't speak Welsh, so it struck me just how much the cadence of the language is so similar to English. I assume it's because of their Germanic roots...

  • Welsh has no germanic roots nor is similar to English...

Due to the fact its one of the oldest languages spoken in Europe it has had to adapt and invent words to keep up to date with modern inventions and changes etc...

But apart from that Welsh is a whole lot different to English

  • Oh, I am sorry. My mistake. Welsh is Celtic...

Still, it's fascinating that modern Welsh has the same... shall I say, musicality as English. Perhaps from English influence.

  • I think you mean the other way around.

  • I have to disagree with you about English & Welsh having the same "musicality". The Welsh syllable rime is quite different to English and in Welsh pollysyllabic words the stress tends to fall on the penultimate syllable whereas this is not the case in English (stress tends to occur on the first syllable)

  • @supgav

    totally agreed.

  • @forallyouknow Welsh is a Celtic language and has nothing in common with English except that it is a part of the Indo-European family of languages. Wow! Nid iaith Allmaeneg yw Cymraeg!

  • Mae dy Gymraeg di yn *wych* - does braidd dim acen 'da ti, dalier ati!!!

  • ti'n ciwt

  • Da iawn. Dal ati! xxx

  • Hi!! In some ways Cymraeg sounds like Flemish...is it just my impression or is there a reason for this?

  • the only thing that could make it sound flemish is the g sound i suppose. i speak fluent dutch (which is extremely close to flemish) but when i hear welsh it sounds nothing like flemish to me...

  • Yes, I was hearing that G sound and I thought there could have been some mix when saxons and other peoples facing the north see invaded England and Welsh after the fallen of Roman empire. But now I realize that, even if it was like this, it would be in any case impossible, for a Dutch, understand a language 1500 years old...so I suppose I asked a stupid question :o(...anyway... Thank you for the answer!!! :oD

  • Dal ati hi!

Paid fynd i Gaerdydd.... dewch i Aberystwyth lol! Na mae Caerdydd yn dda. Ti'n wneud yn grêt

  • Hey, whare teg i ti am ddysgu cymraeg a gwneud cymraeg fel lefel A! Cymraeg yw'n iaith gynta i a fi'n gweld yn cwrs n itha caled! T neud cymraeg ail iaith?

  • suniad tha...!

  • Heia! Mae dy Gymraeg di'n bril! Dwi'n byw mewn lle Saesneg iawn hefyd felly dydw i ddim yn cael llawer o gyfle i siarad Gymraeg chwaith =( ... a sut allech chi anghofio dy fod di'n astudio Mathemateg?! XD

  • Iesu grist! Ti rili yn dda! Haha, ia, mi driai 'neud ymateb yn o fuan OS 'dwi'n gallu 'de!
