  • Aye MrDarksidematter, towns and counties up and down this land have more than their fair share of those but still, I commiserate with you and Wakey.

  • Im from Wakey and let me tell ya, its full of dickheads!

  • lmao it slowly degrades as they get more drunk .

  • Notice how the majority of people there are from the bottom levels of society...

  • Pubs here in Aberdeen have been decimated by the ban. But why not take a strong snuff instead of a cig? The hit is more or less the same.

  • Yorkshire General election candidates mount challenge to erosion of freedoms - Smoking out freedom - Painters' Arms, Drighlington, West Yorkshire - 28th April, 7:30pm.

  • @MarkHarrop63

EVENT RESCHEDULED - THURSDAY 29th 7:30pm. Painters' Arms, Drighlington, Yorkshire and throughout the UK.

Facebook group - Striking up for Freedom!

  • Went down very well on the day - cars honked, punters cheered, pubs were alive and the local press found some 90% approval.

Of course some weren't happy and things could've been done better but, hey!, it was a protest.

First they came for the smokers, then the beer drinkers, pie-eaters and people that might affectionately call the barmaid 'love'. . but left the anodyne twats that prefer a couple of pints, a quiz night and staid pub alone.

    For now ; )_?

  • I love the jock commentator, he sounds like Duncan Bannatyne off dragon's den. ''Soonds lyk a ridiculous idea, I'm oot, yerz not gettin' my 2 or 300 pooonds''

    DICKHEADS!

  • I was out on the Westgate run this very same day. What a set of idiots these guys and girls were. Wouldn't have made a brain between them. SMOKING HAS BEEN BANNED IN PUBLIC PLACES! GET OVER IT YOU MUPPETS!

  • maybe the ones that dont smoke will go out more now

  • Also clotheirs arms is not Westgate you fucking retards!

  • These are NOT working class you snobby twat. These are the under class I know because I live & work near them but these don't work.

  • The smoking ban was the best thing that has happened in this decade. Thank christ I don't have to suck in other people's shit anymore. Smoke in private you whinging twats.

  • Whats wrong with a seperate room thats private from you? Has no impact upon you.

  • It does if I want to drink in that room. I like the tap room in my pub. Why should smokers shove me out?

  • Let them have the lounge bar then. I'm sure theirs plenty of feasable options. A good ventilation system works wonders. All thats needed is compromise. We had it 50 years ago before pubs were opened up.

  • Too expensive. Just stop whinging & smoke outside.

  • The only cost will be your local pub.

  • & they'll pass the cost on to the customers. Just stop bleating like a baby just because you can't have a fag exactly where you want one.

  • I'm sure the cost will be more than covered by the return of customers who now frequent the pubs less. Its nothing to do with "bleating like a baby". Its to do with the governments influence in private buisness and the "we know best attitude" that they have adopted.

  • But I'm a non-smoker who's delighted with the ban. I'm no longer forced to breathe your cancer creating filth

  • Despite the myth of SHS no link has ever been found between any of the so called smoking related diseases and exposure to cigarette smoke. You obviously don't understand the whole issue so we'll leave it at that. Read "Joe Jackson-Smoke Lies", you can download it as a pdf file. It may be the freedoms of hundreds and thousands of landlords up and down the country at the minute, but i'm sure you wont be so narrow minded when it affects you.

  • Myth? You're a grade A pillock!

  • I'm a pillock? Have you read any of the studies carried out over the years? Calofornia University carried out a study over decades with married couples involving thousands of people. NO CORRELATION. The World Health Organisation carried out its own research in 2002. NO CORRELATION.

The oldest generation of human beings are alive today. They have also been subjected to the highest amounts of SHS.

Go to Joe Jacksons website before calling me a pillock.

  • Oh stop being such a moron. It all depends what statistics you believe. Check out Konrad Jamrozik, Professor of Evidence Based Healthcare, School of

Population Health, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. His research proves passive smoking kills

  • You're just spewing out crass propaganda from FOREST'S website. You are free to inhale what you want as long as we dont have to join you.

  • I cant believe anyone in 2010 doesnt know the dangers of smoking (passive or otherwise). Go & kill yourself in private. Don't force your stinking habit on other people

  • You are a total utter embarrassment for THE CITY OF WAKEFIELD even tho sweaty sock did you catch the English smoking the socks at Culloden moor it cost ya more than 2=3 hundred pounds it cost your nation you don't have aright to a opinion just do as your told by your English masters and controllers

  • Thats disgusting

People seem to thing smokeing is good

  • Fuck me. If ever proof were needed that the working class are working class because of what goes on between their ears (i.e not a great deal) this video is it.

  • And it just means you leave more of your filth on the street - £15 for a pack of fags would pay for cleaning up after you lot :o

  • stop whinging and get over it. People used to go to pubs before tobacco came to this country - it hasn't always been here in case you didn't know. Most of the places on Westgate should close anyhow, they are shit holes. Stay at home and smoke yourself to death in your nicotine stained council house and let the rest of us enjoy the benefits of the tax you pay on your cancer habit

  • There is nothing to get over until democracy is restored and smokers are treated like any other minority, the largest minority in this country I might add! As for your last post then it is simple, give smokers their right to bring out the ashtrays INSIDE and there would not be a problem! As for the Westgate run, the pubs are for ordinary working people to unwind and have a bit of fun, your post tells me you and your ilk don't like fun!

  • It is more fun now we don't have to dice with death to enjoy a night out. Me and my ilk (who ever they may be).

  • Alchol and overweight people are now the target, so best get that diet book out, controls of what we do and social engineering by dictats from the EU are not part of the British culture, its about time everyone woke up to the new USSR the EU. Although the USSR did not restrict pastime pleasures of smoking and drinking, the smoking ban is not about health but control.

  • PEOPLE POWER!!!!

Imagine what a 1000 could do...

Love it. Fair play to you.

  • Smoking isn't normal you need to seek help. It's like dodging trains, one will get you in the end. The reason there's no atmosphere is because of the economic down turn & the fact you're getting older now. The pubs are better without your stinking riff raff stinging our eyes & burning our expensive clothes. Just coz you lot where rags as you spend so much on smoking. Smoking is for the very bottom end of society & the truth hurts. Y can't they just invent cig tablets 2 stop you all from rattling

  • What a lot of shit you talk mizeh, smokers where and still are the salt of the earth because they have more common sense and reason than a stupid anti tabacco zealot like yourself. You have no reasoned argument about smokers being in pubs other than you can't stand the smell or trot out the old shit that you smell after being in the presence smokers! You should wash more often because you stink of more than tobacco!

  • Ok we both have different opinions, fair enough. When you are struggling to breathe, gasping for your last breath whilst waring an Oxygen mask I'll come & sit next to your hospice bed. You might not remember me though as you'll be smacked up on morphine. Hope you don't get lung cancer. Good luck.

  • they should let smokers smoke its wrong i totally agree what evey1 is doing i was there and most the pubs in the goverment is killing the pub trade every1 should join in

  • Although, having said that...I am glad people can't smoke inside the bars anymore.

  • Being the boozer's capital of the north is nothing to be proud of but I do agree that pub owners should have had the choice.

  • I used to love going round Wakey at the weekend. Not anymore, no atmosphere, empty pubs & more people outside the pubs that inside.

Wakey was the boozers capital of the north - not anymore!

It would've been interesting to have had some comparison if we'd had the choice to have smoking/non-smoking pubs....I bet the smoking pubs would've been thrieving!

We've gone from a democracy to totalitarianism in a blink of an eye!!!

Thanks labour - you played a blinder!

  • They ARE boycotting pubs - that's why 14 times as many pubs closed in 2007 (pre Credit Crunch) than in the year before. 6 pubs a day closing, 100,000 jobs lost. Well done Labour! You protected then alright - from working.

  • there should be smokers pubs & non smoking pubs.i dont go in pubs now coz i cant ave a fag.smokers should boycott all pubs

  • I'm with you. Landlords should have had the choice & the governments dictatorship to our once democratic nation has proved that the total ban has provided thousands of people out of work & into the ever increasing dole queues!

All this of course, could've been avoided if the landlords had the privilege of a choice.

  • very well said

  • freedom to choose? I choose to drink in pubs, and i choose to do that without breathing in stinking fag smoke & going home at the end of the night, smelling like an ash tray! Thankfully for me, and the majority of people that 'dont' smoke, the law has made that choice available to us.

Smoking is a serious health risk, it is proven without doubt. So is drinking alcohol. But when i order a pint at the bar, i dont force everyone else in the pub to have a drink of it!

    Glad thats off my chest!

  • you would have an argument if it was your business but it clearly isn't your busisness. It should be up to the landlord whether he / she allows smokers or not. f they don;t want smokers in THEIR pub then that's fine I have no problem with that. But what about those landlords who smoke and want their pub to remain a smoking establishment. You say you don;t want to breathe other peoples smoke, that's cool, but think about the landlords that don't want people like you in their pubs.

  • Please keep your smoke out of my lungs...thank you!

  • Fuckiing MCCon-all and Kerr would shit a brick...

  • Great to see!! In London we prefer to blend into the crowds of punters out on the street with our own beverages in hand & ciggy in the other.

The hotel industry did FA to oppose the ban, so why should be support them with our pennies.

    Viva la resistance!

  • ooo, i heard about this

  • Sorry I forgot to put my name (Socketgreg)I do not hide behind false names.

    Greg Burrows, Dewsbury, west Yorkshire

  • I would also like to note that roughly 25% of this country smokes, for the misguided MPs who where fed false evidence that second hand smoke is dangerous by ASH etc (when it is an irritant to some people, and it smells and there is no statistical evidence that show it is dangerous) shows how stupid they are to let the health fascists dictate what they make laws on which has destabilised the cohesion of the country.

What the Hell are they up to.

  • The antis were never banned from investing their own money, were they, they do not care how many jobs are lost. They do not care how many lies are told either. No more charity from me, not when they give it away to scams like this. It is a disgrace, as for the drug companies hmm, will not even go there. Pubs are losing out, why do you think the MPs need to try and promote them Kingrattus!

mandyv from F2C freedom2choose info for tolerant non-smokers and smokers alike

  • Wish I could have been there TBY, I am glad the day went well. We all know the lies some of the papers spout, that is why i gave them up a year ago. What is the point, trying to work out what the truths are. Enstrom/Kabat told the truth. The lies from the antis do not stop. freedom2choose info for tolerant non-smokers and smokers alike

  • The Scottish bloke who kept saying, 'Thas pub has denied us entry and has jest lorst batween two and three hundred poonds' - is hilarious. How much was he expecting the people on his ludicrous protest to drink? Were they topping up the cost with pork scratchings? Pubs are not losing out. They are all still open!

  • I do not now where you are from Kingrattus but in the North East, this ban has caused people who smoke, who used to finish work and go for a drink and get the frustrations of the day out of their system, to go home which made the landlords stop opening as without the mix of smokers and non smokers, it is not worth opening, (I miss socialising early doors of which I had done for many years) and it can not be good for society for people not to talk

  • I totaly agree...it might cost £300 at the top of westgate for a round, but its a cheep round in the waterloo. I want to be able to go to a pub, and not come out stinking of smoke! The majority of smokers I speak to, are happy enough with the RULES! and pubs are still doing a good trade. Like the smell of a stinking fag, some Wakefield folk are very stubborn. It'll will be a long while before people in Wakefield stop smoking. I'm just glad the LAW says, they cant smoke in pubs.

  • obviously plenty of bars werent happy with the ban and were losing business. Well done for doing this protest and I wish i could have been there and taken part. Vive la Resitence!!

  • I would like to say,Well Done to all that took part in the run,the fact that people should have to do this in the first place tells you what a shambles this Country has become, the Hospitality Industry is dying thanks to this fraud of a ban but idiots still say it is for the best, the ban is falling to bits all over the Country and so it should,it is about time the antis woke up to smell the coffee because the only pubs that will remain if the ban continues will be cafe,s that only sell coffee.

  • I was one of the group protesting and I clarify what THB has said below, one or two people may have been a bit boisterous, but with any group of people you always have one or two, there was never any aggression towards anyone, the paper must have made this up, the protest went very well and every one was re markedly well behaved for such a large group.

  • I think you'll find that the media have reported on this.

It was on the front of the Wakefield Express lat week.

Several landlords/landladies reported intimidation and bullying.

The pubs that did allow the smokers in were strangely not available for comment.

Jackie Hardy the chairwoman of Wakefield Licensees Pubwatch and landlady of the Jockey pub said "They were very aggressive. I think it was absolutely appalling". Alison Lund, Landlad of the Waterloo pub said "They used bullying tactics".

  • I was the one that took the video and there was no bullying or intimidation, we asked if we could smoke as a protest and when they said no we left, there were marshals to see that we did so, you can see one marshal getting protesters out on the More from the Westgate Run video. Everything was calm and measured. There was no political involvement from any party, only people like myself that will fight this ban until its reformed to let us smoke in venues like pubs and clubs.

    John H Baker

  • Peaceful protest is fine and I will support anyone's right to do that.

Aggression and bullying isn't and that is exactly what happened on the day in question.

Of course that aspect has been excluded from this video. What a surprise.

  • Then perhaps you'd like to provide video evidence of your own endofthefamilyline. Strange how no media has mentioned this alledged intimidation.

Clearly you will resort to any lie to vilify freedom of choice. The only bullying and intimidation on display is from the government and the anti smoking pressure groups.

  • This is a prime example of peacefull protest at its most effective. People exorcising their right to spend their own money in places that welcome them.

The antis hate the very idea of free choice, and have to resort to insults and hate, in their desperate attempt to cling to power.

  • To be honest, I don't fully agree with the smoking ban.

I feel that it should have been more carefully thought through, maybe by allowing the licensee's to decide for themselves or to provide smoking rooms.

However, there are elements within this particular group that I find quite disturbing and they're doing more harm to their cause than good.

  • The pubs lost out on potential business that has been lost due to the ban and throwing people out to enjoy their LEGAL habit.

  • To be honest, this has put me RIGHT off smoking.

It's hardly the glamorous pursuit that it used to be portrayed as.

Various Jeremy Kyle rejects moaning about having to stand outside pubs to pursue their anti-social hobby.

Apparently each pub that turned these people away, lost out on "Two to three hundred pounds'..was that in pie sales alone?

  • TBY i dont think theres any illness antismokers haven't blamed smoking or passive smoking on including an engline dropping off a plane onto one's head or getting run over.

  • I used to smoke, was a classic can not give up, but did 20 years ago when 31. No patches then or silly sob stories, just got on and did it after seeing an autopsy and my dad lose his leg at 50 due to smoking.

Wake up and smell the coffe, this is not a game!

  • Rights - we all should stand up to our rights, the right to vote, right to smoke where we like, freedom of speech, wear what we like, birkas and funny outfits, free to drive as we like, free to drink, free to drive when drunk and kill people, free to pass on pasive smoking to our kids. Free to have lung cancer and watch your family suffer as you die because you dont give a shit.

Please have a smoking pub for smokers only and 90% of people will not go, they will walk and go elesewhere now.

  • Rubbish mufazie, 90% of pubs were made up of smokers that's why non smoking pubs before the ban reverted back to smoking. I'll say this once, Second Hand Smoke kills NOBODY, never has and never will so you can't equate drunk drivers who kill with smokers. Show me a death certificate that says somebody has! There are lots of reasons why your dad lost his leg, like thrombosis. Bloody anti smokers want to blame EVERY illness of others on smokers, pathetic!

  • Reported intimidation?? Well not that I know of!! They just made it clear to the landlord's they dont care about who could potentially be their best customers. It is the government that is the oppressor. Oppressing freedom of association and porperty rights!! This is well worthwhile for a protest!! I only wish I could have been there and taken part in this protest and broke this fascist undemocratic law with such passion!!

  • I hardly think that these appalling specimens from Lupset and the like compare very well with Nelson Mandela and the ANC. No less than four pub landlords/ladies report intimidation and bullying when they refused to serve them. At least these licensees had the guts and good sense not to be frightened into submission. This was not a peaceful protest - this was an aggressive spree in which this shower of scum showed themselves to be precisely what they are - bloody awful.

  • Sorry King no aggression the day went off very peaceably

  • Kingrattus, how can you call this protest "intimidation and bullying"? All they are doing is chosing where to spend their money. In this case they are spending it in places that permit them to smoke.

This is in no way intimidation or bullying, it is simply people exorcising their rights of free choice.

  • The conduct of the protesters has been absolutely vile. They are carrying out an illegal act. The landlords that permitted this were in breach of their licenses. I understand that at least one of the protesters has links with the BNP and indeed it is the tactic of the BNP that we are seeing here - intimidation, bullying and a disregard for the law. It is a shame that these idiots cannot think of something more worthwhile to protest about.

  • Ratty, You stupid person, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the BNP. These are real ordinary, honest people who are protesting against a BAD LAW. Nelson Mandella was put in prison defending his and others liberty - THIS is no different!!

The intimidation and bullying is being done by the state - working to the agenda of a minority of anti-smokers.

This protest is a blow for freedom - theirs AND yours !! Long may it continue and the more the better

  • smokings for chumps anyway

  • If smoking is banned in public places then pubs must be public places. How come an individual can throw me out then? WELL DONE, Stand up against this latest version of big brother and state control. When ya doin it next? cos im only in Horbury

  • well if ya dont smock dose it matta just hav a lath and fuk da law [SMOKE ON BOYS AND GIRLS!!!]

  • What about the rights of non smokers who dont want be subjected to having carcinogens blown in their face but would like to go for a nice drink in a pub too?

  • Not a problem Penny, smoking pubs and non smoking pubs, you takes your choice and pays your money. This ill conceived law needs reforming.

    John H Baker

  • Yes, well done bigyin. Its so good to see someones standing up for their rights.

Time this dictatorship was brought down

  • You guys are all fantastic. Its all about a freedom to choose.

Best of luck in all your new campaigns.

    Mandy of Denhale.

  • what does this prove....???

  • More of the same please - reduce this alleged 98% compliance with the ban - show the people that smokers have been bullied enough, and that the ban's alleged 'success' is rubbish!!Too many licencees have suffered.

  • Love this spirit of Freedom to Choose. The tide is starting to turn against the totalitarian Smoking ban!!! We need these kind of protests all over the country!

  • What a joy to see people once again smoking in a pub, everyone enjoying the atmosphere and the feeling of freedom. July 1st 2007 was a sad sad day in this country, and this video has made my day.

Congratulations to all the people involved. Fabulous!!!!

  • yes Hairy they deserve to go broke! How is it hospitality to send people who could be your best customers out the door??

  • Pubs have a simple choice, turn away smokers and go bust, or welcome smokers and benefit from smokers money. This protest is a brilliant way of taking back our freedom, through the wallet. Those pubs that don't want smokers money can watch their business go to the wall, and good ridance to them.

  • It is just the beginning cat as they plan more protests like this. Two people that were at Westgate were a husband and wife team who run a pub in Leeds and they want to bus in these people for a similar event there. We also hope to do the same at Hamish Howitt's by-election in Howden. We're taking the fight to the politicians but now it's time to take the fight to the people who are most effected...The PEOPLE. They need to know we care.

  • Well done to the good citizens of Wakefield for having the courage to stand up for themselves and for freedom of choice. Long may such opposition continue - and hopefully this is just the beginning. WELL DONE all!!!
