Great video! I've been in Hawaii my whole life and I find Hawaiian hurricanes to be fascinating. They didn't think Category 4 hurricanes like Iniki could even hit the state - but clearly they can.
Any kind of hurricane from Category 1 to Category 5 can hit Hawaii. At first, Hurricane Iniki would miss the islands but instead it recurved and hit Kauai. The changes of a Category 5 hurricane hitting Hawaii are very low. It's possible but low. Due to the fact that Category 5 hurricanes are rare in the Pacific Ocean and also it's because the subtrophical Ridge protects Hawaii from hurricanes.
Thank you for sharing your memories. I remember the night before, hearing the weatherman telling everone to get a good nights sleep as a class 5 hurricane headed for Kauai! I laughed at that. I remember afterwards thinking I would never be able to walk anywhere on the island barefoot again. And I most certainly remember the military working hard to get Kauai cleaned up. God bless your husband and all that helped from the military to the doctors that stiched me up after a clean up accident.
Yes, it was really bad but the worst case senario is if a Category 4 or 5 hurricane hitting Oahu. The damage in Kauai was $2 billion dollars. The estimated damage of a similar-type hurricane in Oahu will be $25 billion dollars in damage. Oahu was damage a bit during Hurricane Iniki but not really heavy damage.
Awseome video....I was on Oahu in Kailua during this and it was bad, but not as bad as this. I can't imagine how terrified you must have been. The other thing I remember is the sky - before the hurricane that morning, all the sirens were blaring, and the sky had this weird ominous greyish purple look. And yeah, after, just quiet, water running, trees and leaves blowing. My husband was in the Marines and went to Kauai to help clean up, he told me how bad it was there.
i remember.
