NUCLEAR MISSILES GENERATE AN EMP WHEN THEY EXPLODE. Since America had become overrun by Russian Troops, Armor, Aerial and Naval Support, price fired of a Nuclear missile to disable and destroy all of them. Since America was taking a pounding and had lost alot of their own vehicles already, this evened the odds although now everyone was fighting dark. If detonated high enough in the sky(low orbit is my guess) there shouldn't be any extreme effects.

Russian air support and counter defense systems disabled them, which is why the paratrooper infantry was detected while they were already over America. It was probably a signal blocked by a Russian satellite signal algorithmic that disabled the detecting abilities of the recon devices, which Russia is famous for. This also explains why Nasa needed to use a camera cam from an astronaut who was repairing the satellite over Texas.

@helper769 Actually it was a nuke, The kind of EMP they describe is caused by a large release of energy in the upper atmosphere (remember the space cutscene?) So in short it was a nuke but he used it as an EMP.

@Zhaileo you are right, there is no EMP if there is no Nuke, To create an EMP you need the Energy power of the Nuke.
