30 seconds in - that is clearly not a cigarette being lit :) I was there. Couldn't believe it when Richie Havens came on and this top tune was played.
I have to admit that almost 30 years later after hearing this song for the first time it still brings "goose bumps" when I listen to it. When I was a lot younger, this song brought the house down in a club known as Bora Bora on the Greek Island of Corfu. Thanks to a DJ named Gino Bianchi who pounded the beat to this song every night people would go into a near frenzy when they heard it. Truly this is a song that has some soul to it.
@cdngr Which version was it? The original one w/ Odyssey or Richie Havens'? See if the link I provide of the former works here. But otherwise I think Richie Havens' version of it on his album from the same year, 1981, is much better than this one. What I also remember, 30 yrs later, was that even in major discos in Europe at the time, the dj's played both these versions right after another. (Couldn't post Odysseys' version, but you can find it yourselves on youtube.)
@cdngr Sorry, further to my comment; THE ORIGINAL version of this awesome tune is of course LAMONT DOZIER from 1977. Check that one out also!!! You're in for a treat. "Superb song written by the man himself, was part of motown songwriting team, holland, dozier, holland. This song was later covered by 80s soul group, odyssey who hit the no 4 spot in the uk charts of 1981,good as it may be,original is best" as the uploader says. From that one Riche H. obviously draws his inspiration...
ps ... 383 .. I also thought that the song was written by Richie. I don't remember it being released in UK as a single. Is my memory fading? Source for LD as writer ...?
All yall should check the original....as this is a cover. The great Lamont Dozier is the composer. Still, Richie Havens did a fantastic job pumpin' this cover out. Always gets the crowd movin' at clubs. Go check the original now!
I only know of the Odyssey version - hit in UK in early 80s. That was good ... for it's time. Personally, having lived through the 'disco age' I love hearing classics brought up to date with a new slant & Richie certainly does that. "Ain`t talkin` `bout no roots in the land
Does anybody have the accoustic version he sang on Arte "One Shot Not"-Show, aired in May 2008? Cant find it anywhere and that one really rocked! Awesome version without the disco beat... pls somebody post it!
The very best of the new and the old...music crosses boundaries...

What is so wonderful about this particular song for me is that it speaks about
getting back , each of us, to the roots within ourselves where true freedom is found.
Richie knows that place which must be why he is so powerful and his feelings when singing this song ring true deep within us. Onward.........
