Well you can write a bar with 4 triplets also in 12/8 but then with 8th notes(actually 12th notes). Because you usually look where the accents are, this song is best described in 4/4 i think since theres just 4 evenly spaced accents each bar

If it was in 4/4 as opposed to 12/8 then you would be able to subdivide the 4 beats easily into 8th notes, but that clearly does not match up at any point in the song. If you play triplets throughout the whole song, it completely matches throughout.

A 2/4 or 4/4 meter is simple duple (or quadruple) meaning that there are 2 or 4 beats per bar, each subdivided by 2. A 6/8 or 12/8 meter is compound duple (or quadruple) with 2 or 4 beats subdivided by 3. Simple beats are divided into 2, compound 3.
