Then there was a 6 month cease-fire, in which Hamas fired randomly at Israel, while continuing to smuggle rockets.

According to the Hague convention of 1906 (and incorporated into the Geneva Convention), persons living under occupation are justified when launching attacks against their occupiers. So even presuming it was a legitimate mortar attack (and not a provacateur attack designed to lead up to a similar IDF bombing attack on the northern areas) it should be construed as self-defense.

Hamas uses civilians as shields. This WHOLE thing started back when the Brits divided the land that is now Jordan and Israel. But some arabs (that think of themselves as Palestinians) didn't want only 80% of it, they wanted 100%. So they tried to kill all of the jews. That's where it started.
But the real reason is most arabs want to "Wipe Israel off the face of the earth." So it won't matter what Israel does or does not.

This may be so regarding occupying powers. However, Israel has left the Gaza strip 3.5 years ago. There is no Israeli in the strip since (appart from the operation last month). The palestinians could have built a country, but they chose to build bomb and launch rockets at Israeli civilians. Israel doen't need to supply the palestinians anything since it left. The paelstinians are Israel's enemy by declaration and actions, and thus Israel doesn't need to open its border to them.

Borders exist between countries. When the countries are in peace - the borders are usually open for trade and passage. When the countries are at war - the borders are closed. Hamas is at war with Israel so no one can expect Israel to open its border with its archenemy and feed him, and supply him with all he wants. It just can't happen. Ask yourself if your country would do that with its enemies. Did Syria supply Israel with fuel and oil? NO. However, Egypt did so after their peace agreement.

Israel withdrew from Gaza WITHOUT negotiation, even though it was rocketed for 5 years. While the Palestinian Authority was in charge of gaza, they could not prevent Hamas from smuggling weapons into Gaza through 100's of tunnels from Egypt. Finally, Hamas killed 100's of their own people, namely Fatah, and took Gaza by force. They kept rocketing Israel for the next 3 years. Then there was a 6 month cease-fire, in which Hamas fired randomly at Israel, while continuing to smuggle rockets.

Aid trucks into Gaza have slowed to a trickle, aid boats have been rammed out of the water and infrastructure is being destroyed--homes, police stations, schools, mosques. 700,000 are without electricity or running water and refugees seeking shelter in UN marked buildings aren't safe from Israeli bombs.
If Israel is not at war with the people of Gaza it sure as hell doesn't look that way.

Israel's fight against Hamas is mostly for the citizens of the south- but it's also good to the people in Gaza, who are being brainswashed and hurt daily by hamas- not Israel who brings them into Israeli hospitals, gives them food, and so on.
Open your eyes and see the whole truth. Hamas wants to kill, not peace. It wants everything- not talking. It hurts even the people it claims it protects.
Good luck brave citizens of the south, and people in the north and the IDF will protect you.

Israel is fighting hamas who fired rockets at Israel. Hamas thought he can smuggle rockets into Gaza while Israel keeps the crossings open. It won't happen! Hamas couldn't and didn't really care about it's citizens. many Citizens from Gaza are supporting the hamas from the allegedly, but blaming hamas for the situation actually (though you won't find people saying it or their heads would have been decapitated.

Egypt also controls an entry/exit point but won't allow any aid in. Egypt know enough not to deal with Hamas. For Israel it is even more dangerous, but they still provide what access they safely can because of humanitarian concern. Hamas even blew up one of the crossings, so whose fault is it that they are closed? Hamas violence, not Israel, keeps out the aid.
