you know I like to see you become a college football ref put in that excact same situation as a ref in a game against lets say Arizona St. and LSU and see what call you make in real time and when there was no replay.
Looking back, I agree Michigan got bailed out. The first call was I guess slightly questionable, but the 2nd fumble was clearly a fumble and clearly recovered by Illinois. Sorry about that.
I agree this shouldn't have been a fumble, but not for the reason you stated. By NCAA rules, it is not a fumble if a player is tackled and loses control of the ball at or after the time he makes contact with the ground. Putting the ball on the ground and having it knocked out of your hand when you are not otherwise down means the ball is still live. In this case, however, the runner's head hit the ground, so he was down by contact.
I consider this game the beginning of the end for Turner -- we put so much on that game. We were never the same after it. We get those bad calls and win the game, we'd have a different past 10 years for sure.
This game was the straw that finally broke the camels back with regards to instant replay in the big ten. Such a horribly officiated game, it is even like these calls were close. Everyone in the stadium saw these w/out the help of replay, just terrible!!
@PSU24RULZ Hmmm...well being youre a Penn St fan I don't want to say a lot lol, but the refs do NOT always favor Michigan. See: Michigan/MSU games in 1990 & 2001.
@jcgamer107 another way to prove that not all refs like Michigan watch Michigan Vs Appalation State they got killed and mostly because of some fumbles and one or two blown calls that could'nt be review cause the "Genius" coach of Michigan used his reviews on two obvious fumbles
you forgot to show the muffed punt.... it went right through the michigan players hands and they called it down.... those reffs werent just blind... they were retarted... and deff wanted the Maze n Blue to win that game.... bastards
The angle the refs had...it could've looked to them like the ground caused the fumble, the way the ball bounced up. Clearly replay shows that he was stripped. I can understand how this could get fucked up back in the pre-replay era.
I remember that game. Drew Henson came in the game in relief of Navarre. The refs did make some bad calls. its all good we needed that game....But us UM fans dont get nearly as many calls as the Irish
I was at this game, and most of us who were still call this "THE Michigan Game." The whole season went downhill after that. It was strange sitting in the stands b/c we couldn't figure out why the refs kept giving the ball to Michigan. There was another one where Rocky Harvey didn't even fumble the ball, but a Michigan guy picked it up after the play was dead and they called it a turnover. Man, that wasa rough day.
Michigan got the ball after each of those plays. The illinois fumble, if it was in fact a fumble (his elbow is arguably down) was clearly recovered by the same player (Rocky Harvey #23). The Michigan fumble was clearly out and was clearly recovered by an Illini player. Somehow Michigan got the ball after both of these plays. If the Michigan fumble would not have been botched, illinois could have easily run the clock out by taking knees.
like i said... the audio wasn't on the disk that i burned, and i really didnt feel like doing it over. Do you really need a commentator to tell you that is a blown call?
Neither one of those calls was particularly hard, even at full speed. The first one was obvious regardless of the angle. The second one would be obvious if the ref is positioned anywhere but facing the offensive player's back.
so you people are telling me that you can make the right call in .0006 seconds? i bet not...back then the officials did not have the pleasure of instant replay. if you guys think that the job of officiating is that easy, put the stripes on yourself. you would learn real quick that it isnt as easy that you make it and as easy as commentators make too.
but u gotta remember that this was LOOONG BEFORE they had official reviewing, they just went off what they could see, this was durin the times they wer really wantin a replay booth
I realize that and thank you very much to any future IIlini fan who posts for putting those arrogent, vulnerable, human assholes in Columbus in their place! (UM has come oh so close the past couple of years it's refreshing to see OSU lose.) I have nothing against the Illini or their fans really.
Being a fan of either team I am being objective...Illinois should of got the ball, no question. I remember seeing this and was amazed that Michigan kept the ball.
I guess we'll agree to disagree on this clip. Keep in mind that me (a UM fan) and any Illinois fan are seeing this through 'baised eyes.' Anyhow thanks for the gift this year- the Illini under Zook can't handle the big time too undisclipined.
no problem madvids. we also gave you the gift of being able to win outright the big ten title this year. i'll be rooting for michigan next week, because if they win and Illinois does as well, Illinois will finish 2nd in the Big Ten standings with the head to head against ohio state.
It doesn't show the whole clip after Rocky Harvey recovered. My point is that the ball was still up for grabs. He hadn't secured the fumble and also at no point does Harvey's knee touch the ground, the fumble was clearly caused by the hit from #6 on Michigan, they said in A-train's case he hit the ground, ground caused the fumble I say it could go either great game by both teams.
Except that the Illinois tackler grabbed A-Train's facemask before the fumbled the ball, so it would have been a 15-yard penalty either way. I was at this game and even the Illinois play-by-play guy said the Illwhini blew their chances to win this one by not finishing the job on their own or stopping Michigan's run game.
One of the biggest travesties Ive ever seem in college football. But it wasnt in vain. This game is the reason the Big Ten was the first conference to call for instant replay.

the fumble at 25 seconds was not a fumble, the ground forced it, and if the ground forces it, its not a fumble.

1) The ground caused Rocky's fumble
2) He recovered it and was clearly down
3) A-Train clearly fumbled the ball before he was down
4) If you dispute any of that you are any idiot
