Guys, check out the Buck Vantage series. It's a great knife in this category. It might be a good replacement for that Kershaw Skyline, but everyone has their own preference and this is just a suggestion.
sorry i cant tell if you said e300 or e350 plz let me know. i have a leatherman e300 and i have put it through everything and has never disappointed me!
The new Cara Cara is a much better blade. FFG without that stupid hump on the spine of the blade and the Tenacious clip. Really cool blade for around $20-30
I picked up a no-name brand knife from a flea market for $15. I was expecting this thing to be exactly like all the other cheap Chinese made knives, but it wasn't. It was far from it. This thing was razor sharp and holds an edge forever, and the aluminum scales, witha back spacer, are rock solid. Just for fun, I tried batoning several two-by-fours with it (and I beat the hell out of it), and the edge remained in perfect condition, with no dents or chips, and the simple liner lock remained solid.
they sell em cheap in uk there not worth a great value in the uk for a normal knife new would cost about 3 5 pounds for a used simple knife 1 2 pounds it depends how sharp
Good choices. I have all except the leatherman. The skyline clip and g-10 is veryy, very tight. It will eventually rip your pocket. On the upside, if you are very active you will not have to worry about the skyline falling out of your pocket.
@diancuk088 The skyline has been at Walmart for years, for $35.00. They are on sale for $30.00 (discontinued) right now at all 4 walmarts in my surrounding area.
I have the Tenacious and The Skyline both high quality blades that came razor sharp. Probably the two top knifes under $30 dollars, especially coming with G10 handles. I just picked up the Kabar DOZIER. I got the desert tan handle with a blacked out blade. Nice looking and stands out from all my black handled knives. Its a really simple design, yet cool, with a nice handle and a really sharp blade. And for the $17.99 I paid for it, i'd give it best knife under $20
the leatherman i have says it's 420hc and it can go from dull to wicked sharp with about 5 minutes of sharpening. aus8a is an exotic japanese steel even if the knife is made in taiwan(cold steel make knives of that steel in taiwan and sells them for $400 a piece) it is one of the better steels(depending on the heat treat). i like your vid keep up the good work.
What's your opinion on some of the cheap spring-assist knives from places online like Bud K and Extremely-Sharp? Specifically, the United Cutlery Rampage and Tac-Force Speedster Stiletto (both under $15 each). Been fairly happy with the Smith & Wesson ExtremeOps manual folders I've been carrying for awhile now, but I'm looking to upgrade to something a bit bigger with a spring assist as a defensive backup option when I can't carry a firearm (such as at work).
The RAT 1 is my favorite EDC knife under $30 too. The were discontinued for a while but they are back now and I found them again with new colors on knifecenterdotcom. They are about $31 now but definitely well worth the money. Thank you Ontario.
Also to add the KA-BAR, while a tad shorter in blade length ( but same width on the spine) than the RAT 1 and much thinner profile pocketwise, will still give the same functionality. I only mention this as the RAT looks/ feels much more beefy although it's all in the handle giving the impression of a larger knife. If you're EDCing this could be a point of contention to an LEO if he/she asked to see it. The KA-BAR probably wouldn't get a second glance if blade length isn't an issue in ur area.
@newfoundlandhunter1 It's not produced any more, my best guess would be checking Amazon or ebay for new in box/used options, knife stores rarely have them in stock now
I got my RAT 1 earlier this week from an Amazon marketplace vendor. It's a pretty sizeable folder but still pocketable. If you don't have any luck locating one, I'd say go with the KA-BAR Dozier folding hunter he also showed on here. I just got mine today in Blaze Orange and I love it! I think I can safely say I actually like it a tad better than the RAT 1. I'm going to be ordering another in Desert Tan soon. The KA-BAR is also a lockback design vs liner lock of the RAT 1
@newfoundlandhunter1 I got mine from ebay, I could only get the part serrated blade but I tihkn plain edge knives are more useful. All in all it is a fantastic knife ans has come in handy many mnay times.
I previously posted a negative comment about the Byrd Cara Cara. Just wanted to say that I have since become a fan of the latest Byrd designs. I added a Meadowlark 2 to my collection, and will probably buy the Cara Cara 2 in the near future. Thanks for the vid.
@Daflaminasian the paraframe will break in fast if you use your knives. but to open it one handed you need to flick your wrist and build tension in your thumb before you find the correct deployment angle
I like to use pocket knives for wittling but i dont have the best knife it is actually the worst but once i have the money ill buy a better one, i hope. Those are the best pocket knives i saw yet great design and its useful.
I can recomend the Kershaw Chill, verry lightweight, nice blade (with or without souracions) great steal (8Cr13MoV), looks elegant, flip opener (verry well done)
and great pricing: 16$ to 20 $. Ich recently bought it in switzerland and it was about 30 SFr. and even at this price its a great EDC knive!
Excellent video. I have to agree pretty much everything about best 5 high value knives, I got just TONS of Rat 1 since its my absolutely favorite edc high value knife. I got rid of spyderco Tenacious because of its blade shape, weight, and poor material compare to Rat 1. Now, I am getting Kershaw Skyline and Ka Bar for its size and weight for a pocket carry. Rat 1 I do not pocket carry, but keep it in my car / around a house by taking the pocket clip out.
@CreativeOutletHobbie i bought a cheap pocket knife before i went on this 3 day hiking trip, thought i might need it. but all i did was cop off leaves n fern or whatever. its good for potatoes n tomatoes tho.
@daviewavie112 Self-defense, since where I live (New Jersey) prohibits carrying firearms, mace/pepper spray, and Tasers. A knife is the only option offered to NJ residents.
I 2nd the Rat 1 I have had it for over a year now and its great......If you can spend around 50 you cant beat a spyderco Edura 4 though.....I have both on me at all times.
I got an $8 Ozark from walmart and it is very good. Thick steel, strong, nice grip. Made in China though, so no food cutting with it. I honed it with a steel and it's dangerously sharp, the out of the box edge was nice to begin with.
Good list (minus the right hand only thumb-stud. I am left handed and there for resent you :P). Just be careful with the tenacious. I've heard it tends to bite. And I would honestly just up my price point to 50/60 at this point and buy a Delica or Endura. Still a good list of cheap and well built knives though.
thanks dude great vid. i was gonna buy the kershaw scallion at dicks for about $30 cuz i like kershaw a lot, but i just realized the skyline has a bigger blade and is a cooler shape.
look for a buck knife they stay sharp and lock good and theyre not too expensive. theyre at any sports store. im 12 and my first pocket knife was a buck
oh, dude. tight pocket clips are no problem. I bend every last one of mine out until the knife is basically hanging. allow me to qualify: my clips are tight on field/uniform pants, not my office slacks. I have worn knives EDC for 16 years and never lost one.
My best friend and I each bought that leatherman when we were kids and used them in the woods every day. We put them through way more than they were probably desgined for and they held up. I also have the Kershaw Skyline which is one of my favorite value folders. The thumbstuds are actually functional if you'd rather use them than the flipper for some reason. And i've personally never had a problem with the clip. Good video idea.
@HITMANMONSTER the Gerber safety is crap --sticky and cheap feeling. The Byrd knife is the best deal --- but they are ugly ---I got 2 ---Raven and Robin. If you look around for specials you can find a Benchmade Vex for around $50.Its worth the extra few dollars
@HITMANMONSTER I wish you were right--- I got one right out of the blister pack that hardly moves-- pisses me off ,never had that problem with any of my Kershaws .I will probably never buy another Gerber .
I'm sure they are all designed, planned, marketed, sourced, and sold by all U.S. resources. That's higher skill and creates more wealth than following directions and putting something together. just my 2cents.
@viniv20 Because everything made in America is nanoengineered from invulnerable unobtanium and infused with pure essence of the gods. Wheras anything made anywhere else is made of compacted panda bear crap and will instantly give you AIDS.
Nice choices. With all the quality, affordable options we have these days, I have become somewhat addicted to getting as many good knives as I can for as little money as possible. The Tenacious and Rat 1 are next on my list.
your skyline isn't assisted opening? did you buy it from big 5 or do you live in california

I actually have the Gerber F.A.S.T draw knife, don't have the tanto tip though. I bought it at a Walmart in Hermitage, TN for $21 bucks

The tenacious has a 3 3/8" blade, not almost 3 inches. Unless you got the persistence which is 2 3/4".

I just got a Tenacious and I love it!

the ka-bar dozier knives have reversible thumb studs and clips - useful if like me you're left handed.
excellent light weight knife which comes in several blade shape varieties. And only just over 2 ounces.

@tomfaranda have you ever used/tried the bobcat doziers? i'm looking at one to replace a light duty fixed blade.

nice choices I just wish they were all made in the USA :D
skil1977 2 years ago
I'm sure they are all designed, planned, marketed, sourced, and sold by all U.S. resources. That's higher skill and creates more wealth than following directions and putting something together. just my 2cents.

@skil1977 what is the deal with everyone wanting to have their knives made in USA ?! if the knife is a very good quality/value/money , who cares ?
viniv20 1 year ago
@viniv20 Because everything made in America is nanoengineered from invulnerable unobtanium and infused with pure essence of the gods. Wheras anything made anywhere else is made of compacted panda bear crap and will instantly give you AIDS.

Nice choices. With all the quality, affordable options we have these days, I have become somewhat addicted to getting as many good knives as I can for as little money as possible. The Tenacious and Rat 1 are next on my list.
wcropp1 2 years ago
I'm a big Rat-1 fan. The tenacious never gets used.
