They got everything right on this car, but it could use some more horsepower. Mom's got an 04 Mustang and I was driving behind her and she was like "That thing looks f***ing scary! Not only that but it's loud too!" These cars do have the best looks and the best stance of any other car out there.
i never understood why chevy never really tried to improve their motors instead of just putting in a bigger displacement motor every couple of years, if chevy would just try and improve on the old instead constantly throwing old engines away for new ones, then american sports cars would have a lot better chance at competing with their european and japanese competitors once they got to the corners, instead of just on the straights
@EdwardJellico dude i just got a 86 camaro IROC-Z for $300 and all i needed was a regular tune up and a new starter but other than that everything is original
@josh1303 A friend of mine just picked up an '89 IROC that was originally a 305 TPI with 5 speed manual. The previous owner swapped the 305 for a 350 TPI and kept the 5 speed. So we have an IROC with a 350 TPI AND 5 speed manual, pretty cool.
@TheSHIKAMARU1 lol yea and its related to chevy pick up motor... full size van and etc. a 350 block is a 250 block and can be accesorised anyway u want
you should be able to make that 305 run pretty hard even with the TPI stuff. The first area you should be playing around w/ is the intake and exhaust. GM always screw up those 2 areas. How is your exhaust in that car
what do you mean chevy needs the bigger engine? The mustang only has a 4.6 liter engine even in the mustang GT. the z28 camaro had a 5.7 liter engine. if anything the mustang needs the bigger engine.
If you read what he stated it said they needed a bigger engine. If you research the Camaro/Mustang/Firebird history, the GM always packed a larger cubed engine than a Mustang. The only times this wasn't true was the Z/28 vs Boss 302 's both had a 302 cid engines to compete in the Trans-Am series. 351's vs 350's in the early 70's
both cars have three different engines that can be ordered from the factory the Z28 comes standard with a 5.0L TBI pushrod V8 and the Stang of the same gen had the 302 cc Ford pushrod V8 standard wich is only a 3cc advantage to the Z28. 5.7 was the upgrade for the Z28 and you could get a Stang with a 307cc V8or in later models the 4.6 through 7.0 V8 engines. Its all what you ordered. The base models of both cars also had 4 and 6 clynder options. the 4 cylnders being a complete failure
ive had 3 integras, 1 civic coupe, 1 civic hatchback and 1 crx in the past but when i first got my hands on a 1991 camaro z28 convertible i just fell in love with it, get an iroc-z with the 5.7 litre.
Mines an 86 and isnt stock, I like whats been done to it but a lot of people might not. Im working on getting the 355 and carb setup done. Oh and I got rid of the ugly red interior its now black.
it has subframe connectors the previous owner put $2,000 into
ahh man, i LOVE CAMARO's I have an 88 iroc-z , its pretty rusted up and the alternator is giving me helll!, but overall best car ive ever had. It has sweet T-top
lol have you ever seen a xterra?? everyone i know with one is falling apart. You end up buying two cars essentially. Nissan has some quality problems lately, older models im not too sure about. oldest ive had is a 91 inifinti ,but obviously they put more effort into those.
bottomline imports are usually low quality, punch out plastic toys and american cars are made to run all day.
an IROC-Z is the best model for the year meaning its a V8 that has Tuned Port Injection it is a 5.7 liter and is 350 cubic inches and included upgrades such as Performance Suspension and 16-inch Z rated tires, The RS could be a V6 or V8, 5.0 liter(v8) or 2.8 or 3.1 (V6), with Throttle Body Injection, see wikipedia under
Third-generation Chevrolet Camaro for more information
how much would a decent (i know the car is old neway) true IROC-Z be? I want the best one i mean i like japanese cars nissan is my favorite company..Nissan in 1990 produced a engine that put out 205hp with a 2.0L 4cyl and this needs a BIG ass 5.7 naturally aspirated to make just a little more than that lol...then nissan came out with the same 2.0l in 1995 which made 255hp which i think is more than this..but anyways about this car yea
don't forget the camaro probably made twice as much torque. torque wins races, hp sells cars however, the V8's of the 80's were pathetic there was a 5.0 in the berlinetta and it only made 150hp but they responded VERY well to mods, you change the cam in that 5.7 and you'll see a lot more gain than if you had in the nissan. I think GM could have done better for power in the 80's but theres tons of potential.
@squarecnix In 1995 the camaro z28 now produced 275 hp from the 5.7 liter LT1 and 325 lb ft of torque and was avaiable with a 6 speed manual trans which most japanese cars didnt have back in 95 either.
these motors were built for torque more than hp... the 2.0 motor (which im guessing is the SR20DET you're referring to) which was tuned more for HP.
@squarecnix Well, as price goes.. I purchased an '85 in great condition for $3500. Everything on the car was original except for the shifter and steering wheel, though this did not bother me as I'm rebuilding it anyway. They're really not expensive, but don't expect to go spend $4,000 and get a 10 second car, it will take some work.
@squarecnix You're comparing engines that were designed for different tasks. That generation Vette engine was tuned more like for truck use while the Nissan motor you're flapping your lips about are for mowing lawns. The IROC motor only puts out 220hp but 328ft. lbs of torque that would rip the nuts off of your Nissan junk and send it flying back to Tokyo.
@squarecnix it makes more power than that in actuality its closer to 280 but it was always underrated for insurance purposes and emission but a dyno will tell you the real deal my lt1 trans am put down 305 to the wheels after 118000 miles completely stock and that was rated at 275 hp
@americanman911 So your LT1, stock, dynoed where an LT4 does, stock? C'mon man. No way an LT1 puts down 305 at the wheels without headwork, cam swap and headers.
@squarecnix your complaint about the Chevy V8 requiring 5.7L to make 200 HP in the 1980's is invalid. GM also had a 2.3L Quad 4 DOHC 15 valve 4 cylinder (introduced in 1988) which had almost 200 HP (191 hp between 1991-1993. 180 otherwise) on 2.3L, 4 cylinders, oh yea, and naturally aspirated. The Chevy V8 produced such low numbers at the time because it was restricted by emissions and using an outdated pushrod design. The engine is reliable so they still use the Chevy V8 today.
@SilentOneCorajuda13 i have a question for you. im fixing to buy a 86 iroc z z28 with a 305 tpi i was wondering how do i tell whether that engine is the l69 or lb9? cause i know both engines were avalable in 86 one of them produced like 215hp. i just dont know how to tell which engines in the car
Third generation camaros were the model years 1982 to 1992, the 1969 is considered to be a First generation camaro, but yes i agree the Fifth gen camaros look impressive
I'm going to get another one, but my next Iroc is gonna be with the 350 5.7L L98 V-8, I like the 305's cuz I know how to modify them, but it's time for a 350!
