I don't know but derpy hooves speaking isn't just some pointless occurrence. The name was specifically set out and encouraged by the brony community. What's more than that is the fact that the creators ACTUALLY WENT WITH IT. This isn't some "nickname joke", they actually went through and made the background pony (who only ever showed up in quick snippets) into a canon pony (i mean what other show actually promoted a background character because the community liked them?).

They wanted it to be enjoyed by the girl's parents, and they really cared for the show, to be just like that. Not a generic girls cartoon but, a show with good written characters, a well told story and catchy songs is what makes this show so great.

I myself have been missing a cartoon just like that, the last couple of years and i think many other men in my ages has so too.
