Tris Speaker was a better hitter, better baserunner, and much better outfielder than Stan Musial. Why is he ranked behind Musial? Otherwise your list is quite good.
Ruth was absolutely the greatest to ever play the game. From a talent stanpoint, he just blows away everyone. If he would have been in any kind of shape, his stats would have been off the charts. On top of all that, he was an All-Star pitcher. He was the greatest.
ruth is far above anyone else due to the fact that he probably would have made the hall of fame as a pitcher had he never picked up a bat.in his early 20's he was the best lefthander in the american league and set a record for scoreless innings pitched in the world series that stood for about 4 decades. to get that now you would have to mix verlander and pujols into the same person. unbelievable talent.
Ans how many of those players did you get to see play? 120 years of baseball and the top 10 players all played at least 50 years ago. I don't think so.
GREAT LIST! Hornsby and Speaker are terrific choices, yes, I think DiMaggio belongs in there but where? And Cobb is ABSOLUTELY the second best player ever! Good job!
@amiris63 Ted was a liability in the outfield though . Not a complete ballplayer . He was a briiliant hitter ,but I don't rank him as a top 10 all around baseball player
Not a bad list. It seems to favor players of a certain era, though... funny that no one who's played in the past 35 years is on the list. Do you really think that if we could transport Pujols back to 1925, he wouldn't hit a zillion home runs? Players today are pulled from a much more competitive talent pool than back then. I like your analysis of statistics, but they have to be put in context. (That being said, there isn't a lemon anywhere on your list.)
Only thing definitive about you list I can say is that Aaron doesn't belong on it. He's outclassed by every player on there, honestly. Otherwise, good list.
I would move Mays to 1, Ruth to 2, and Cobb at 3. Mays, with his fielding, throwing and running; and Ruth, with his pitching, should be in a separate 2 man category all by themselves.
I agree with 1 and 2, that's about it. Rogers Hornsby and Ted Williams are both top five and Hank Aaron and Willie Mays have no business in the top five. Mickey Mantle should be in there somewhere as well as a pitcher, Ed Walsh or Walter Johnson perhaps.
@GlorifiedTruth And home runs are a better measure? Because that's the only thing Kilebrew has on Cobb. Literally the only thing. Look at how many strikeouts he had. Cobb rarely ever struck out. Look at OBP while you're at it.
@yankeesfan6300 - Oh, I don't think Killebrew was better than Cobb, not by a long shot. But to say a .303 means you're not a top 10-er, I don't get that. Willie Mays had some great years when the league average was .233. And no, home runs don't make up for crappy batting average if you suck--e.g. Adam Dunn. But .303 along with 660 HRs is pretty freaking good. Plus great baserunning and fielding... you get the idea.
@yankeesfan6300 - Also, as Bill James says, if you're going to go by batting average, you'd have to say that 95% of the game's greatest players played before 1940, which doesn't make sense. Averages change as conditions change.
And yes, I agree, OBP is often overlooked... it sure was for old roided-up Barry Bonds, who had as high as .609 in a season. That's pretty freaking incredible, steroids or no.
funny they say ruth was a nice pitcher and a great batter all around great in both but still ty cobb beat him out for the first player ever to b elected to the hall of fame by 98% going for cobb that says alot about cobb and hes career number

Jimmy Foxx belongs there with Speaker and Honus Wagner. Mickey Mantle and Frank Robinson are close behind. If it wasn't for the controversy over performance enhancing drugs, Barry Bonds easily belongs up there. Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols belong in the top 20.
Where is Carl Yastrzemski : 452 HR, 1844 RBIS, 11988 At bats, 3308 games played .285 lifetime batting average, 1845 BB, 1816 runs scored, 646 doubles, 1 time MVP, The last man to win the Triple Crown in 1967, 6 times he batted .300 or better..........
TOO WHITE YOUR LIST. BE MORE RATIONAL , 6 OF THEM NOT EVEN HAVE 3000 HITS YES , YES THEY ARE WHITE , OK , CLEMENTE , MEANS MORE TO US AS A ROLE MODEL THAN AS A PLAYER . , THE IMPORTANT THING IS WHAT YOU ARE REMEMBERED AS , NO NUMBER CAN MATCH THE SPIRIT OF THE HEART..
Thats a pretty good list u actually know stuff heres my top 10 "Babe" Ruth Willie Mays Ty Cobb Hank Aaron Mickey Mantle Ted Williams Josh Gibson Lou Gehrig Honus Wagner Rogers Hornsby
To me the most underrated baseball player was Roberto Clemente come on he was one of the best dude and he reached 3,000 hits and he still had more years into him!!!1
@SlayerInBlood You got it. I had the pleasure of watching Willie play. He did things that bordered on the supernatural. To quote the great Vin Scully (someone who knows a thing or two), "The single greatest baseball player I have ever seen."
@cokemist34 Willie Mays is THE GREATEST CENTERFIELDER IN BASEBALL HISTORY. He played in one of the worst parks to hit home runs out of: Candlestick and manage to hit more home runs than anyone in a 10 year stretch.
Finallly a great list. I would find it tough to argue with ur list. I mean top 10 is very hard but the people u have in here do have the credentials. Not only was Ruth an amazing hitter, he was an outstanding pitcher! Without a doubt the greatest. Great list
@TheBukes92 Thanks man. I thought about disabling the ratings for this video because it's a solid list and doesnt deserve to have almost half of the bar red!
this is so based on nostalgia. tony gwynn has as many batting titles (the n.l. record) as honus wagner, rod carew stole home 7 times in one season (one short of cobb's record) he won a batting title without a single home run, tied cobbs record of leading both leagues in batting average for three straight years, he hit .388 in a pitchers era. frank robinson won a triple crown and was the only person to win mvp in both leagues, retired fourth on the home run list, and was the 1st black manager.
I totally appreciate the fact that you made this video and I'm not knocking you for your effort ,but what about mickey mantle or duke snider?I think you did a good job on picking #1 because mays is not #1 by a long shot! anyways thanks.
I totally appreciate the fact that you made this video and I'm not knocking you for your effort ,but what about mickey mantle or duke snider?I think you did a good job on picking #1 because mays is not #1 by a ling shot! anyways thanks.
Overall, it's a good list for talking about lists. Too many from old days, I always want to divide when black people were allowed in. I would absolutely say that Bonds is, without a doubt, one of the greatest ever. When you take into account that EVERYONE, especially pitchers who were the biggest users, were using steroids, it makes Bonds even better, as, he just schooled everyone with his bat. But, Bonds is a schmuck, no doubt!
@thewiredrabbit I have a belief. If you dont wanna be criticized and put down then dont take steroids. Bonds was my favorite player growing up. Now he's just a douchebag to me. It is what it is. He chose to take steroids so i chose to hate him for it.
@spartinjordon44 No Ruth "was" a pitcher for a few years. OBVIOUSLY he is more famous for being a hitter. So obviously my video is correct in saying no pitchers but including Ruth. It seems like you are really stretching to find a flaw in my video.
here's my list: 1.babe ruth. 2. lou gehrig 3. willie mays. 4. ty cobb. 5. stan musial 6. tris speaker 6. honus wagner. 7. mike schmidt. 8 josh gibson. 9. frank robinson. 10. greg maddux (people dont realize just how amazing he was in an era that was in favor of power hitting)
If you add Shoeless, who do you rid of. Aaron never had more than fifty Hrs in a season. Among the greatest home run hitters in baseball, but not in the top ten players of all time. Then there's Mays .302 lifetime B.avg. Mantle's was .298, but if he doesn't play his last year, he hits over .300. Mays did hit 660 HRs to Mantle's 536. But Mick wins 3 MVP awards to Willie's 2. Also, Honus Wagner hit .325 to Joe's .356. That's a thirty-one point difference.
Watched the show again. Thought it was great. Feel Joe Jackson jumps to three or four. Played 1332 games, while playing thirteen years in the majors. Has a lifetime batting ave. of .356, and collected 1772 hits in his major league career. Played in 14 world series games, had 19 hits and batting .345. Remember Shoeless Joe was found not guilty by a Chicago jury. First time commisioner of baseball, Judge Landis, banned Joe and seven other Sox players to set an example.
Really enjoyed the show there have been so many truly great baseball players, I realize it is impossible to get them all in. I thought two players that might have made it were Shoeless Joe Jackson and Joe Dimaggio. Obviously this is all subjective. When I was a kid in the fifties, I can remember the big debate, who was better Cobb or Ruth. Aveage or power. Well today baseball is more into power. The perfect example is the steroid era we just got out of. Fans long to see the long ball.
Good list. Here's mine 1 Babe Ruth best lefty pitcher in the majors and then he went to the outfield. 2 Willie Mays 3 Ty Cobb 4 Honus Wagner 5 Ted Williams lost 5 seasons defending his country 6 Lou Gehrig 7 Hank Aaron 8 Joe DiMaggio played as a right hander in the old Yankee Stadium. Lost 3 years in the Army. Botched foot surgery ruined his post WWII career. 9 WS championships in 13 years. 9 Stan Musial 10 Your guess is as good as mine.
This is a pretty good list, but what about Josh Gibson? I also think Mays should rank slightly ahead of Cobb. I agree with Ruth at #1, don't forget he was on his way to being a hall of fame pitcher before he was moved to the outfield because his hitting was so good.
Ruth did more than "just" hit home runs, he even stole home plate a few times. If I remade this video I would have Willie Mays at # 1. Yes Ruth isnt the best overall player. Yes Rose extended his career to break Cobb's record but that record is not unbreakable. What about Ichiro Suzuki? He won't break the record ONLY because he started his career too late. He has had over 200 hits for every year of his career so YES it is possible for that record to fall one day.
all around players not homerun hitters..he was famous for that and that was it...rose was an all around player ruth did nothing more than just hit homeruns....we are talking about all around players..not famous players...lets not forget about players like ..clemente....yount....brock....carew.....records are ment to be broken no matter how long you play the game..extended carear was a pretty lame excuse for the best hitter of all time no one will ever get more hits than rose....
where is pete rose look at his stats...you have a womenniser drunken lush for number 1..homeruns was it..other than that he really wasnt that good of a player...
@mcnikki01 And Pete Rose extended his career too far to break Cobb's hit record. Nobody has been able to do what Ruth did and he wasn't on steroids...if anything, he was a bit out of shape and still had an amazing career. Players these days need steroids to break his records. Don't diss Babe Ruth....if it wasn't for him, baseball wouldnt exist and that's a fact.
I agree with most of this list, although I'd rank Williams higher and Musial a little lower. Kinda surprised to not see DiMaggio on here, but don't really disagree. I think he was overrated by the NY media. Looks like you did your homework. And thanks for not including the steroid boys.
@redsoxperson101 The only reason I left him out is because I didn't count pitchers because I don't see how you can compare them to a hitter. The positions are just too different to compare. I was going to make a greatest pitchers video but must of forgot about it. Not sure if I will make one or not.
@situationcritical22 It's my opinions, i never claimed that this list was one of the best. As for Bonds.....I would possibly put him in the top 10 if i redid this list but oh well....thats what he gets for being an idiot and taking steroids and ruining his image forever. I don't like cheaters. He was my favorite player in the 90's. Now he's the poster boy for steroids in baseball. Don't get mad with me about leaving him out...it was his decision to take steroids.
I agree that this is a good list, carefully considered and obviously thought out. Noone will ever agree on a matter such as this but I think it is still a good exercise for a fan to consider these things and share them with others, just to remember the players that gave us so much positive influence in our youth.
@quimby8395 Sorry...that's lame. Ripken wasn't a top 10'er. Rose...top 20. Joe Jackson...clearly getting the sympathy vote. Jimmie Foxx #2...no way. His list is better.
Pretty good. Ted Williams might feel a bit slighted...Tris Speaker & Stan Musial above him? Hank Aaron is overrated...good longevity, but rarely best player in any given year & never hit 50 hrs in single season.
@SlayerInBlood hahahahah EVERY one of the players on here cheated. im not trying to tear apart your list. but at least have some respect for opinion. Nice song choice too ^^
This is a good list. There will always be arguments. but I believe it is a good one. It looks to me like most of your criticizers really don't know that much about baseball judging by there comments. Bad music however. Maybe something from "The Natural" or "Field of Dreams"
@redrocket3962 I am very limited on songs to use for my videos and the song I used in this video is FAR from bad. Maybe it dont fit right with a baseball video but this song is one of the best instrumental songs in heavy metal history.
@mw2mr1 yeah but he played many many mor years the fields were much bigger in ruths time and no this list is actually pretty damn good i think williams needs to be higher you got to remember too aaron never hit 50 home runs in a season and ruth life time ave. 342 714 with 342> 305 755 (with many more years to accomplish oh and lets not forget the years ruth was a pitcher and a dominant 1 at that, he batted very little.
@mw2mr1 Hank Aaron needed four thousand more at bats than Ruth to do that. Thats 4,000! Ruth's lifetime average is .342! i'm sure your a big Aaron fan but there is no way in the world he is close to the baseball player ruth was. Ruth # 1 Period! no debate!
Well he's a lock if you're doing it by position, and he could make it if you're just doing top 10.
Fantastic fielder, completely lifted all of the Phillies teams he played on, and of course, amazingly consistent hitter, both for power and occasionally average. Name one better 3rd Baseman.
He never had over 160 hits is because he was so great at taking walks. Average is overrated, and his was outweighed by his great power. Doesn't matter how many times he hit 40 home runs, he still hit 548 for his career and averaged 37 per year. Fielding Percentage means just about nothing. Look at his runs saved: 129 in his career. If he is "similar" to them, it doesn't mean he's the same. Far better fielder than both of them and didn't play longer than he should've.
As for Robinson, of course he was a better fielder, but he didn't provide much offense, and offense is what makes the great players great. Had a few good years in the mid '60s, and then stuck around way longer than he should have. (1972-1977: averaged .245 with 6 home runs per season.) Also, had the same career average as Mike Schmidt, but his On Base Percentage was 58 points lower.
Nothing that you have said justifies putting him in the top 10.
Downplaying his mediocre AVG...ignoring his propensity to K's...Sounds like Dave Kingman.
I wouldn't put a single 3B in the top-10. Ernie Banks would be a better choice...but he was too good to waste at 3B. He's better than Schmidt in every way.
Oh...and oddly enough...I don't see a single other person on this list asking about Schmidt. So I and the rest of the baseball world respectfully disagree.
I haven't been trying to justify putting him in the top ten, I have been trying to convince you that he is the greatest third baseman ever. Mediocre average and strikeouts are something almost every power hitter has. It's a fact. However, Schmidt's fantastic fielding and great OBP, (50 points higher than Banks') make up for the average and strikeouts in my book. Look at the top home run hitters. Frank Robinson, Griffey, etc. All had similar K's, similar OBP, and were worse fielders.
nice list.not only was babe ruth one of the best hitters of all time but would've been one of the best pitchers if the yankees wouldn't have made him a hitter.thats what made him the best baseball player of all time.
@imnotapancake Your wrong too. Ruth could and did steal bases. his lifetime fielding percentage is .968 and his still has records for pitching in the World Series. That is NOT "one aspect". In fact its because he could do all those other things that he is better than Cobb.
Its a good thing that you did not add Barry Bonds or any other person who took steroids their whole career great list even though I did not ever know who some of them were
Great Video! I like how you include the statistics. Personally, I would replace Mickey Mantle for Rogers Hornsby in the top 10, but no big deal. Other than Babe Ruth, who should always be considered number one, the other nine are interchangable and you can make a case for most of them as number 2 or 3 of all-time. Anyway, thanks for sharing. I enjoyed it
1 Ruth (stats don't lie; no contest) 2 Williams 3 Gehrig 4 Cobb 5 DiMaggio 6 Hornsby 7 Mays 8 Bonds 9 Aaron 10 Musial I know people hate the Yanks, but DiMaggio needs to be on this list, and high. Compare him to Mays, 2 best CFs, for instance. Per season: Joe D .325 avg 143 rbi 34 hr .977 ops Mays .302 avg 103 rbi 36 hr .941 ops Not even close. Plus Joe's 9 RINGS to Mays' ONE. PLUS Joe missed the 3 prime years of his career to serve in WWII, imagine his stats with those.
I agree with your most of your rankings, but you should either decide to rank Barry Bonds first or second, or omit him completely. The stats are certainly there, and more so than any other player in history. A 1.421 OPS for an entire season? (2004). Some years he walked so many times he was ineligible for the batting title.
@27metube27 DiMaggio...possibly most overrated player in history. You are crazy. Mays was way better than DiMaggio. Batting averages were lower in the '60s overall...Joe's .325 isn't that impressive. Then...let's talk HRs, RBIs, extra-base hits...end of contest.
@pbireton You're entitled to your opinion. Judging how many times you post you don't think anyone else is. Many see Mays as better than Joe, fine, but to call Joe overrated is ridiulous. WS Champs; Joe 9 Mays 1. MVP's Joe 3, Mays 2 (& Joe missed 4 prime seasons for WWII). 56 game hitting streak (61 in minors!). He's also ranked the most handicaped player by his home stadium ever, 45 homers would be 60 anywhere else. He'd hit 500 foot OUTS! How can any intelligent person call him overrated?
I like willie Mays #1 only because he could field better than Babe and cobb was a prick. And yea if your a cqards fan I guess you have to put Stan befiore Ted a nd tris. Why Tris before Ted?
@msm318 I'm not a Red Sox fan I'm a Cardinals fan and I made this video almost 2 years ago. I have since then changed my list and plan on making another video of the top 10 players and this list isnt terrible. If you think this list is awful then you dont know shit. All 10 players are true legends of the game
@quimby pete rose?! come on, find another - i'd take ripken off as well, he beat lou but he was also a quitter who benched himself and WITHOUT ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
alex rodriguez and albert pujols - might be early, but i'm sure they will both beat out rip and rose
matt has a better list, even if i'm bothered by barry bonds being at the top, I AGREE! and his weakest of 10 beat out either rose or ripken...
of course this is tricky when its relative to the time and ball differences...
@Tmanstuff the only reason i'd put him ahead of mantle was a .027 difference in batting average lifetime... but with 18 homers in the world series its hard to put down mick... that might be the best record you can have!
@wadereed i would put andrew dawson on there as much as i would put ron santo or cesar cedeno in the hall of fame, never going to happen - dawson belongs in this group, a group of honorable mentions but no hall of fame and CERTAINLY no top ten list... you don't know baseball
Yeah, Babe Ruth had one batting title, but do you know what his career average was? It was .342. True, he only had one batting title, but batting titles don't matter when you bat around .342 every year and average around 45 home runs a year.
No one comes even close to Ruth.Had he never picked up a bat he probably would have made the HOF as a pitcher. When he was a starter for the Red Sox he held the World Series record for scoreless innings pitched for over half a century until Orel Hershiser broke it in the 80's.He led the major leagues in homers one year even though he only played every fourth day as a pitcher with occasional pinch hit appearances.
junior hands down.. the way he played mayed him great he respected the game..no issue of steroids unlike bonds sosa a rod and everyone else..and could hit like no other with his sweet swing
I feel barry bonds shouldve been up there at east number 10.....yea yea steroids blah blah.....even though you use it, you still have to know how to hit the ball with the bat. So many used it in the 90s and early 2000 but very few came out on top. Barry Bonds wasnt your normal homerun hitter that usually strikesout alot but oh well this is just my opinion.
from the start i already knew babe ruth would be number 1 (lou gehrig should at least be 3rd or 4th

this is so based on nostalgia. tony gwynn has as many batting titles (the n.l. record) as honus wagner, rod carew stole home 7 times in one season (one short of cobb's record) he won a batting title without a single home run, tied cobbs record of leading both leagues in batting average for three straight years, he hit .388 in a pitchers era. frank robinson won a triple crown and was the only person to win mvp in both leagues, retired fourth on the home run list, and was the 1st black manager.

babe ruth was a pitcher at one time
TheMrAwsome101 11 months ago
Overall, it's a good list for talking about lists. Too many from old days, I always want to divide when black people were allowed in. I would absolutely say that Bonds is, without a doubt, one of the greatest ever. When you take into account that EVERYONE, especially pitchers who were the biggest users, were using steroids, it makes Bonds even better, as, he just schooled everyone with his bat. But, Bonds is a schmuck, no doubt!
thewiredrabbit 11 months ago
@thewiredrabbit I have a belief. If you dont wanna be criticized and put down then dont take steroids. Bonds was my favorite player growing up. Now he's just a douchebag to me. It is what it is. He chose to take steroids so i chose to hate him for it.
SlayerInBlood 11 months ago
@SlayerInBlood you said no pitchers babe ruth is a pitcher oh who sings this song
spartinjordon44 7 months ago
@spartinjordon44 No Ruth "was" a pitcher for a few years. OBVIOUSLY he is more famous for being a hitter. So obviously my video is correct in saying no pitchers but including Ruth. It seems like you are really stretching to find a flaw in my video.
SlayerInBlood 6 months ago
I'm glad to see you put Spoke in at number 8. I think he gets overlooked. And defensively he was Willie Mays before there was a Willie Mays.
sdgakatbk 1 year ago
here's my list: 1.babe ruth. 2. lou gehrig 3. willie mays. 4. ty cobb. 5. stan musial 6. tris speaker 6. honus wagner. 7. mike schmidt. 8 josh gibson. 9. frank robinson. 10. greg maddux (people dont realize just how amazing he was in an era that was in favor of power hitting)
244tristian 1 year ago
If you add Shoeless, who do you rid of. Aaron never had more than fifty Hrs in a season. Among the greatest home run hitters in baseball, but not in the top ten players of all time. Then there's Mays .302 lifetime B.avg. Mantle's was .298, but if he doesn't play his last year, he hits over .300. Mays did hit 660 HRs to Mantle's 536. But Mick wins 3 MVP awards to Willie's 2. Also, Honus Wagner hit .325 to Joe's .356. That's a thirty-one point difference.
TheHomerunk 1 year ago
Watched the show again. Thought it was great. Feel Joe Jackson jumps to three or four. Played 1332 games, while playing thirteen years in the majors. Has a lifetime batting ave. of .356, and collected 1772 hits in his major league career. Played in 14 world series games, had 19 hits and batting .345. Remember Shoeless Joe was found not guilty by a Chicago jury. First time commisioner of baseball, Judge Landis, banned Joe and seven other Sox players to set an example.
TheHomerunk 1 year ago
Really enjoyed the show there have been so many truly great baseball players, I realize it is impossible to get them all in. I thought two players that might have made it were Shoeless Joe Jackson and Joe Dimaggio. Obviously this is all subjective. When I was a kid in the fifties, I can remember the big debate, who was better Cobb or Ruth. Aveage or power. Well today baseball is more into power. The perfect example is the steroid era we just got out of. Fans long to see the long ball.
TheHomerunk 1 year ago
9 Stan Musial 10 Your guess is as good as mine.
trajan75 1 year ago
This is a pretty good list, but what about Josh Gibson? I also think Mays should rank slightly ahead of Cobb. I agree with Ruth at #1, don't forget he was on his way to being a hall of fame pitcher before he was moved to the outfield because his hitting was so good.

JerryFGarland1977 1 year ago
Ruth did more than "just" hit home runs, he even stole home plate a few times. If I remade this video I would have Willie Mays at # 1. Yes Ruth isnt the best overall player. Yes Rose extended his career to break Cobb's record but that record is not unbreakable. What about Ichiro Suzuki? He won't break the record ONLY because he started his career too late. He has had over 200 hits for every year of his career so YES it is possible for that record to fall one day.
SlayerInBlood 1 year ago
@SlayerInBlood honestly he is..let's not forget he was also pretty much the most dominant left-handed pitcher when he was with boston
244tristian 1 year ago
all around players not homerun hitters..he was famous for that and that was it...rose was an all around player ruth did nothing more than just hit homeruns....we are talking about all around players..not famous players...lets not forget about players like ..clemente....yount....brock....carew.....records are ment to be broken no matter how long you play the game..extended carear was a pretty lame excuse for the best hitter of all time no one will ever get more hits than rose....
mcnikki01 1 year ago
where is pete rose look at his stats...you have a womenniser drunken lush for number 1..homeruns was it..other than that he really wasnt that good of a player...
mcnikki01 1 year ago
@mcnikki01 And Pete Rose extended his career too far to break Cobb's hit record. Nobody has been able to do what Ruth did and he wasn't on steroids...if anything, he was a bit out of shape and still had an amazing career. Players these days need steroids to break his records. Don't diss Babe Ruth....if it wasn't for him, baseball wouldnt exist and that's a fact.
SlayerInBlood 1 year ago
I agree with most of this list, although I'd rank Williams higher and Musial a little lower. Kinda surprised to not see DiMaggio on here, but don't really disagree. I think he was overrated by the NY media. Looks like you did your homework. And thanks for not including the steroid boys.
buckfan1969 1 year ago
@redsoxperson101 The only reason I left him out is because I didn't count pitchers because I don't see how you can compare them to a hitter. The positions are just too different to compare. I don't like cheaters. He was my favorite player in the 90's. Now he's the poster boy for steroids in baseball. Don't get mad with me about leaving him out...it was his decision to take steroids.

@mw2mr1 yeah but he played many many mor years the fields were much bigger in ruths time and no this list is actually pretty damn good i think williams needs to be higher you got to remember too aaron never hit 50 home runs in a season and ruth life time ave. 342 714 with 342> 305 755 (with many more years to accomplish oh and lets not forget the years ruth was a pitcher and a dominant 1 at that, he batted very little.
dmk3434 1 year ago
@mw2mr1 Hank Aaron needed four thousand more at bats than Ruth to do that. Thats 4,000! Ruth's lifetime average is .342! i'm sure your a big Aaron fan but there is no way in the world he is close to the baseball player ruth was. Ruth # 1 Period! no debate!

@YANKEEBOY114 Mike Schmidt??? Seriously? I agree that it is biased to older players, but Mike Schmidt? He was great, but 10-best ever...no.
pbireton 1 year ago
Well he's a lock if you're doing it by position, and he could make it if you're just doing top 10.
Fantastic fielder, completely lifted all of the Phillies teams he played on, and of course, amazingly consistent hitter, both for power and occasionally average. Name one better 3rd Baseman.
YANKEEBOY114 1 year ago
Never hit over 160 hits in a season.
Only one .300+ season... .267 career avg.
Led league in Strike Outs 4 times.
Only even hit 40+ HRs 3 times.
Only led league in fielding % once.
Most similar to Eddie Matthews & Harmon Killebrew
Better 3rd Basemen...Brooks Robinson: 16 consecutive Gold Gloves.
3rd Base is the position for Right Handers too slow to play SS, 2b, or Outfield.
Again...great player...but not top 10.
pbireton 1 year ago
He never had over 160 hits is because he was so great at taking walks. Average is overrated, and his was outweighed by his great power. Doesn't matter how many times he hit 40 home runs, he still hit 548 for his career and averaged 37 per year. Fielding Percentage means just about nothing. Look at his runs saved: 129 in his career. If he is "similar" to them, it doesn't mean he's the same. Far better fielder than both of them and didn't play longer than he should've.
YANKEEBOY114 1 year ago
As for Robinson, of course he was a better fielder, but he didn't provide much offense, and offense is what makes the great players great. Had a few good years in the mid '60s, and then stuck around way longer than he should have. (1972-1977: averaged .245 with 6 home runs per season.) Also, had the same career average as Mike Schmidt, but his On Base Percentage was 58 points lower.
YANKEEBOY114 1 year ago
Nothing that you have said justifies putting him in the top 10.
Downplaying his mediocre AVG...ignoring his propensity to K's...Sounds like Dave Kingman.
I wouldn't put a single 3B in the top-10. Ernie Banks would be a better choice...but he was too good to waste at 3B. He's better than Schmidt in every way.
Oh...and oddly enough...I don't see a single other person on this list asking about Schmidt. So I and the rest of the baseball world respectfully disagree.
pbireton 1 year ago
I haven't been trying to justify putting him in the top ten, I have been trying to convince you that he is the greatest third baseman ever. Mediocre average and strikeouts are something almost every power hitter has. It's a fact. However, Schmidt's fantastic fielding and great OBP, (50 points higher than Banks') make up for the average and strikeouts in my book. Look at the top home run hitters. Frank Robinson, Griffey, etc. All had similar K's, similar OBP, and were worse fielders.
YANKEEBOY114 1 year ago
nice list.not only was babe ruth one of the best hitters of all time but would've been one of the best pitchers if the yankees wouldn't have made him a hitter.thats what made him the best baseball player of all time.

Babe Ruth was only good in one aspect he couldnt play the field or steal bases Ty Cobb is by far the greatest baseball player of all time.
imnotapancake 1 year ago
@imnotapancake Your wrong too. Ruth could and did steal bases. his lifetime fielding percentage is .968 and his still has records for pitching in the World Series. That is NOT "one aspect". In fact its because he could do all those other things that he is better than Cobb.

I agree with your most of your rankings, but you should either decide to rank Barry Bonds first or second, or omit him completely. The stats are certainly there, and more so than any other player in history. A 1.421 OPS for an entire season? (2004). Some years he walked so many times he was ineligible for the batting title.
sestey4 1 year ago
@27metube27 DiMaggio...possibly most overrated player in history. You are crazy. Mays was way better than DiMaggio. Batting averages were lower in the '60s overall...Joe's .325 isn't that impressive. Then...let's talk HRs, RBIs, extra-base hits...end of contest.
pbireton 1 year ago
