I hope its okay to ask, but what sort of compounds can i use? I've heard about "arctic" compound, is there anything else, and is there any common stores that sell it? (walmart, bestbuy, etc)
iv done the towel trick. iv done the rt y trick. i disassembled the thing. got the thermal paste for the cpu and gpu and its still fucked. i really dont feel like spending 150$ on the repairs or 200$ on the new xbox. so if AAAANYONE has another idea im up for anything. please respond.
IF THIS PROBLEM IS Reoccurring then simply by bolts for your heatsink over the gpu ..... and also replace the thermal paste with arctic silver small tube:)
close...but they use lead solder which is the one that melts at a low temp, the lead free solder is the good stuff that melts higher lead free doesnt melt until like 250C (if i remember right) rather then 180C for the lead (however they probably used really shitty solder cause no solder melts at the 80C (i think) that the 360 usually runs at
I don't believe reapplying heat sink fixed the problem. I'm pretty sure it will happen again soon. The problem is the gpu and or the hanna chip. They are lifting from the board. You maybe able to get an xbox working again by doing the clamp fix but for a more permanent fix it will have to be repaired via hot air method.
on24eatery- there are lots of places that sell the modified heatsink. nothing you can't find with a quick google search. That doesn't mean he didn't fix his xbox.
i think it will work now, i did the same thing, but 2 months later, i got rrod, i did x clamp methode and when i tried to start up, it wont start up... no power nothing.. i hope it wont happen to you :)
That is also a " Fixed " xbox from Microsoft. As you see they added the the redone heat sink ( below his finger at 0:06 ) , So I dont think he did this.
I replaced the x clamps and what not, but my xbox is still not working... Replaced the screws, applied new "T-Pound" on the gpu and cpu.... I don't know what else I'm missing. Got any suggestions?
Do u know what happens when u turn it on but theres no sound or video. I fixed my Box and i think its working now theres no sound or video. Do u know how i might be able 2 fix it? PLEASE RESPOND!
I removed clamps, cleaned the old compound off both the gpu, cpu, and heatsink, put on new compound, and replaced clamps with spacers and nuts. In other words, I screwed on the cpu/gpu and heatsink. Throw the x-clamps in garbage (where they belong).
the 3-year warranty covers the 3/4 ring of death (=hardware failure due to overheating of gpu).
Should i go and get screws and washers or just put my x clamps back on ? there was a whole lot of thermal grease which had melted onto the motherboard, I must be in a very similar situation to you. Looked like too much thermal grease had been applied. Wondering if i don't need to get washers and screws ?
@ShakeySteve1964 YOUR STUPID! ALL THAT YOU HAVE TO DO IS REFLOW EVERYTHING INCLUDING SOUTH BRIDGE! ALSO THE X-CLAMP FIX WILL ACTUALLY SHORTEN THE LIFE OF YOUR BOX BECAUSE ALL THAT IT IS DOING IS FORCING THE SOLDER BALLS UNDER THE CHIP TO MAKE A CONNECTION! YOUR ACTUALLY MAKING IT WORSE! LEAVE THE X-CLAMPS ON AND DO A DARN REFLOW (THE REAL WAY TO FIX IT.
my is doing the same thing but there wasn't any heat sink compound just dust so we got the dust off and it sill dosent work. also out of what i read on some stuff i googled some of the problems could be fixed before they happen just Microsoft is to cheap to fix it
I'm a complete computer noob and I've been looking around trying to figure out how to fix this. I've opened my case with my Torx 10, I don't have a Torx 8 and i don't know where to begin can someone help me out.
That's why MS offers a 3 year warranty for the 3-Red-Ring...if they didn't, they would have probably faced a forced recall of all the 360s and even worse bad press...
omfg thats all i had to do i bought a new 360 because my metal box was to dang tight(even tried a few power tools) to open but thats this vidra well help a lot since my old one isn't under worrenty anymore lol...thanks
honestly, i had the same problem, and i towel tricked mine and it lasted a week or so...its much better cause u dont void ur warrantty by opening it up
This repair is only for consoles that are out of warranty (in other words, more than 3 years old). Obviously, you should contact M$ if your console is still in warranty.
ShakeySteve, I just spent the day doing exactly what you did, cleaning the cpu and gpu and applying new compound. However I didnt take off the x clamps and replace them with nuts and washers. The damn thing turned back on and worked for about 10 minutes then went back to fuzzy screen with sound. Did yours last and how generous were you with that compound? Also do you think replacing the x clamps with the hardware really makes a big difference??
It may work (and I stress 'may') because it can raise the temperature of the GPU to the point that the solder melts and reflows to a decent contact. But it is definitely not a longterm solution.
hey yah it does help but it only fixes it for about a week and you gonna do it like 25 times that week just send it in or buy new 1 or fix it yourself
and lead free solder actually takes 1/3 more heat to melt freely as leaded! and its becoming an industry standard due to the environmental benefits orver lead products
another tip for this fix is use thinner to clean any flux or thermal compound off the ic's and windex is best for sugar based liquids like soda or fruit juice spills and can stop corrosion. fyi none the less there is a lot of good vids on the 360 fixes and i felt i had to contribute my 2 cents. ; )
as a radio technician full time i work with ic's and circuit boards all day! the best way to fix cold solder is to at best reflow the solder since there could be shorted pins on the ic or insufficient solder. not everyone has a soldering station so would recommend using a heat gun as a back up! allowing the cpu to over heat itself to melt solder can decrease longevity and cause thermal overload internally.
I'm sad to inform everyone that it died on the weekend (August 22nd, 2009)..3 red rings. I vowed I wouldn't try to fix this piece of shit a second time. Unfortunately, I have so much invested in the 360 platform (games, peripherals, etc) that I had to go out and buy an Arcade unit :(
Sucks man, you still might be able to fix it. I don't know if you changed out the clamps for bolts and washers, but that is a must. Also it's crucial to make sure to set up a fan system that has two small fans attached directly to the heatsink. It's kinda hard to piece together everything, but it saved my 360.
My unit had the no video with audio problem after the GFX started to glitch. I sent it to microsoft for repair claiming the e74 error. It came back repaired without a hitch. What does this mean? You can send your unit in for this issue and it is covered under the RROD/e74 extended 3 year warranty as long as you CLAIM the e74 error!!
good idea, leave the case off. You'll probably just have to fix it again. I've repaired my Xbox 360 once already(3 red lights). Now the video output has failed.
I've found this to only be a temporary solution, actually right now im trying to heat my 360. ive completed the heat gun fix and the x-clamp mod. but it keeps coming back. and its an ELITE!! I thought they were supposed to be better not worse!
Heatsink compound creates an ideal thermal link between the chip and the heatsink. You can buy it at any electronics store or online. Apply a small amount (1/4 the size of a pea) to the top of the chip. But make sure you clean the old compound off the chip and the heatsink using rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth (I used a coffee filter).
Didn't have to solder anything. I just took the whole thing apart and cleaned everything, applied new heatsink compound, and put it all back together again.
how microsoft got rid of rrod on the slim ............ they used better thermal compound
