The Whirling Dervishes I believe are Sufis. Some Muslims don't like Sufism because of its Mysticism. Anyway, they whirl to engage into a deep trance to be one with Allah(God) . Imagine it as a person who in Hinduism recites a Mantra to get into a point in their mind that they can separate from their body. Well this is kind of like that, with the difference they want to separate from the Body to be close to God :)
@CatKaryna From Muawiyah (RA). Rasulullah asked in a group of meeting:
"What is this gathering for?" They replied: "We gathered to do dhikr for God's guidance & hidayah." Then he asked: "Is it true that all of you gathered just for this?" They replied: "Yes, we had this gathering nothing more than dhikr to remember Him, Rasulullah." He said: "I came here not to correct you, but to inform you that Gabriel told me that God has sent Angels down to join the dhikr with you all in this meeting."
I was just recently in Turkey and went to a Dervishes Ceremony performed by members a convent of theirs... This is different from what they did in their ceremony and if you do some research u will find this is different. Im not too sure what exactly this Ceremony on here is, perhaps the Arabs have their own one I dont know.

Hey there.. look.. this is not ONLY what Islam is about. This is a part of Sufism, which means great love of Allah. Sufism is like when you love Allah to such an extent that the wordly things don't matter to you at all. Islam is the religion itself, but Sufism is greater love of God. A person should be a perfect Muslim first before getting into Sufism because the self-control and the love that it requires, an ordinary person might not adhere to it. sufism, or rather tassawuf means to purify the heart. Cleaning with with the rememberance of ALLAH-his names and attributes. Either out loud or silent-from the heart. In the sense of meditation, reflecting on ALLAH and his attributes, and looking into self and tryin to better self-killing the ego-that's how you could say its similar. But that's it. No idol, no associating partners (i.e. objects, people, or deities) with GOD.
The modern American body piercing movement was born from a man in North Dakota looking back to ancient Sufi traditions.

sufism, or rather tassawuf means to purify the heart.
