Seems like very, very small differences between the S95 and S100 to warrant "getting whatever you can for your S95 on ebay" and buying the S100 at the cost of hundreds of dollars. I'll stick with my S95, thanks.
I may be wrong but I think the CCD in the S95 has better photographic quality than the CMOS in the S100. However the S100 has better video quality because of the CMOS.
I find really the selling point but a weak one at that is... Gps... However the 1080p is a great improvement and probably the only one that matters. In conclusion, it is not worth the extra $100. I have the s95 and will not upgrade. If you don't have a PS camera you can save the money and get the latter version.
An increase in frame rate from 1fps to 9.6fps is phenomenal. More zoom and larger files should not be overlooked either. I will have both in hand in a few days but I think which one to keep will be an easy decision. GPS is more a gimmick to me at this stage.
@justaddwata This is true... I did overlook the FPS. the Actual burst rate for the s100 is 2.9 and the s95 is 1.9, however the s100 has a extra mode giving it 9.6FPS. I'd add this into my consideration but keep in mind, THAT speed (9.6) cannot be shot in RAW format. In addition, forgot to mention that even though the ISO range went up from the s95 3200 to s100 6400, people always forget that the megapixel count has also increased so its pretty much even in low light and quality.
This guy sounds like he's getting paid to sell the s100.
This guy is an idiot. I'm no authority but he just said they went down to a 10mp sensor which is wrong. S100 is 12mp. 4mm increase on the lower end is nice but isn't a "huge" jump... It's basically a footstep backwards. Base on other recent quality testing by users, the sensors produce almost identical quality, therefore it shouldn't matter too much. However they did change the sensor from ccd to the current CMOS. The only feature that
Indeed. Deal did not last long. I went back after my post here to buy a second one and the deal was restricted to instore pickup only at that point (A select few stores I guess). Now it is not much a deal at all. Did not realize it would be such a short window of opportunity but I guess considering not many even have it in stock any deal is a good deal (and $327 is a great deal)
Not how I see it. The zoom range is better, but the lens is slower. You have one less button on the body, meaning more use of menus. I shoot stills, so I don't care about 1080 video, but if you're serious about video, why are you not using a video camera. Last but least, with the S100 coming out, you can pick up a new S95 for $299, making it the best bang for the buck. No way would I sell an S95 for an S100-add what you lose on the 95 to the cost of the 100-whew! No argument that the 100 is a n
You say the lens is "no brainer", well you didn't bother mentioning it's rather high f-number at the long end which pretty much kills it for me. Also, the actual image quality (judging from pictures, not specs) is not so good, even the guys at dpreview have issues with that. If canon added brighter lens and bulb mode I would love it.
In the big scheme of things 1080p just isn't worth much over 720p. I'd rather have a better stabilizer, a longer zoom, a sharper lens, better low-light performance, or even a better set of controls, than 1080p. In fact, 1080p support killed my favorite camera, the ZS7, it turned it into a soft-focus camera for kids imho.
The reason why they got 10mp insted of 12mp is the buffer memory. This camera is much faster. Funny how to see that people still thinks that the higher iso a camera have the worse iso performance.
One thing that's really holding me back to just jump on this without any thought is the fact that this one has a CMOS censor instead of CCD. Also that this one has 12 MP vs 10 MP. More MP=less dynamic range, which I really like about my S95 right now. 10MP is well enough for a camera like this. Can't wait for some good comparative shots S95 vs S100.
In terms of features; extra zoom & 1080P, meh, cool but don't really need it. I like the GPS though, that's just sweet.
Not sold on this. We are talking about a $140 difference!! (on Amazon as of 11/19) ... 28-105mm lens vs 24-120mm, not a huge difference, 720p vs 1080p on videos - I couldn't care less about higher quality video on a camera meant for pictures, 6400 ISO?! who shoots this high anyways - the pictures will be so noisy forget it , built in GPS - not crucial ... PLUS there are many reports of higher low-light quality images on the s95 as compared to the s100 .... You decide
@FrancCastle Canon had to keep pace w/ the competition, by adding 1080p HD video w/ optical zoom, & widening the fast end of the lens at f2.0. While Canon tries to decide what to do w/ the S-series once they enter the "compact system camera" wars, ex's. of "improvements" to the S100 include a slower lens along its focal length, no better battery life, switching from CCD to CMOS, shrinking the sensor size (acc. to snapsort (dot) com) & adding unnecessary MP's. I love how the S95 is now £200 and the S100 is around £400...not a lot of new features to justify double the cost. The S95 just offers way better value for money.
canon produces excellent cameras indeed but think they put too high prices which is irritating. s100 is around £450 but what will be price for sucessor to g12?

@Pagansdad
Yes, you get both autofocus and optical zooming while recording video. It also has IS.

Hi Mat. I would be more interested in your thoughts re the switch from CCD to CMOS.....THAT is the big difference between these two cameras.....plus as others have said 10 UP to 12 MPs.

@avss01 - Well, in theory, the CMOS should be cleaner at high ISO. In theory...

Nice video, but the upgrade is a 10mp CCD on the S95 vs the 12MP CMOS on the S100.

Pixels are not reduced on the S100. S100 actually has more at 12mp, up from the 10mp on the S95. Sensor size is unchanged.

the S100 is a 12 MP camera not a 10MP like the S95
