Hi Guys great job if you drill lots of small 1/8 th holes in your foam it will rejoice the risk of trapped air under the form and make the board stronger by linking the tow sides together
great job guys...ive been wanting to fabricate my own carbon fiber wake board but ive been told that carbon fiber has no shock absorbent properties make any landing hard on the knees...how were the landings for you guys? beautiful board btw.
I have to hand it to you this is a great video and now you're making more...AWESOME!! Are you having any troubles andd seeing flex, cracking or stress related issues with your layup? Just curious, I love composites but not formally trained. I've built everything from resin tables, to custom race weight tilt front ends to yacht hulls and decks. I'd really want to help ...if I can....or what ever??? I just love working with FG.
Great job guys. On your rocker table you said you put plastic down did you just lay it down???? Also, how are you finding your mounts as you have covered them. do you use the original template ??
@robandlinda1 It's just taped down around the edges. The aluminum thread mounts are corroding with stainless screws. I am switching to stainless for the next board.
@d3deville or screw in a small piece of a zinc anode . Galvonic action is the problem. Ever see outboards hanging off the back of a cigarette boat? Know why they don't have issues corroding? Zinc annodes. Take the smallest anode and make a washer with it 1/16 inch thick and screw it into each mounting plate..problem solved. I've seen gil brackets that are powder coated crack at the stress points revealing the steel underneath and almost lose 60k worth of outboardecause of not having zincs
Use fiberglass in the cabosil mixture. Although carbon fiber is stronger it's tensile strength is it's weakness. Better yet use Kevlar in the rail filling mx
@beachnative420 I plan on replicating this handy tutorial. I want to use fiberglass flock (1/32 milled fibers) for the rails in addition to the microbaloons. Is there a version of kevlar in a milled fiber? I also was planning on using kevlar tape around the rails but I think it will be difficult to form around the edge in a process like this... What would be my best option do you think?
@beachnative420 I would be concerned with the resin to glass ratio no matter what you use. I've never seen Kevlar milled fibers but you can make your own by taking the kevlar cloth apart and cutting the single strands about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Then using a scale use the 25 to 75 ratio of resin to kevlar mix. Having trouble getting that to mix easily? Use your vaccum pump to get out the air then see how easy it is to work with then use a small amount of cabosil to thicken it if needed at all.
Excellent, thank you for sharing. A couple of questions:
(1) Looks like a lot of foam in your resin. Are you squeegeeing all that off or letting it dissipate. For a clear layup (like for decorative wood coated with epoxy) I find this foam never really goes clear.
(2) You put the filler all round the edges and you say to trim up to that, but how do you dress the edge after that? Are you trimming into the filler?
great info . Would also be good to see how you released and trimmed the board when done.

after the carbon. u put a transparent plastic foil. (7:00 before the peel ply) why? what is that????
byaky 9 months ago
@byaky its the "non stick" part, its coated( or made of) a release agent that doesn't stick to much of anything.

How do you find your inserts when its all de moulded to drill them out? paper template?

Hello
I must say that is a beautiful board.
But i 'm interested in foil you put over the wet lay-up before peel pay layers. Is that some kind of special foil or just normal thin nylon foil.
Thank you for this video it helps me alot.

Glad I can make woodies from 4 layers of 3mm plywood (3.4kgs complete boards) - so simple to build with PU glue and long lasting too.

doesn't it have a weakness around the edge seam when constructed this way?
DanFrederiksen 1 year ago
Does the foam in the laminate provide extra strength or is it just to provide the final shape for the board?
JustWonderingHowToDo 1 year ago
@JustWonderingHowToDo It's mostly for shape and moves the material to the outside where it can provide the most stiffness (like an I-beam does).

@d3deville is there a screw thread in the aluminium block, or just a hole?

I'm guessing they overlaid the original template, then used a small diameter drill bit and cleaned up the holes to the edges
