And the True Value spokesperson as seen at the 4:56 mark was Lee Phillip, a famous Chicago TV institution and co-creator of "The Young and the Restless." (Chicago was also the birthplace of "Soul Train" - alas, the nationally syndicated version that started in 1971 was taped in Hollywood from the get-go.)
@HomeoftheGoodGuys Yes, my dad told me that "Soul Train" originally aired on WNEW-TV (channel 5) now FOX in NYC during the 70's (I wasn't born yet) but he told me it moved to WPIX-11 sometime in the mid 1980's I think when Tribune Entertainment took over. That's were I remember it best on WPIX-11 from the early 90's on up.
It's great to hear the late legendary Sid McCoy announcing "Soul Train". Plus the "Capitol Clothes" ad, The WJKW TV-8 Christmas promo, "Miracle on 34th Street" promo, the upcoming promos during the credits of "Soul Train", and the WJKW Station ID was v/o by former staff announcer, Andy Hale.
ilove...lovely video..nice of you to show us these classic Soul Train clips and commercials and on Christmas of 1977...so amazing...thanks for sharing
You will see former and current TV personalities of Dick Goddard, Jim Mueller, Judd Hambrick, Tim Taylor, Dave Buckel, Mike Keen, Susan Howard, Bob Franken, Pete Carey, Jim Finnerty, Bob Cerminara, the late Ralph Gertz as Santa Claus, and Herb "Soulman" Thomas in the TV-8 Christmas promo.
@wmbrown6 I have another tape from the same people that starts with Lawrence Welk, then the news and Public Square (a local public-affairs type show) then Hee Haw, so that's at least pretty close! (Uploading the newscast from that tape today.)
@eyeh8nbc - "Hee Haw" and "Welk" combos were more common in some markets - after all, Roy Clark of the former show had a big country hit in '72 with "The Lawrence Welk / Hee Haw Counterrevolutionary Polka." This is why I didn't mention that combo, instead wondering about "Soul Train"/"Hee Haw" because of WJKW's "Soul Train"/Welk back-to-back.
@eyeh8nbc I'm glad someone else remembers Public Square with Dave Buckel as the host...and the theme for that show was "Westchester Lady" by Bob James.
@glennmillerfan Beta, in Beta II Mode on Sony L-750s. (Does anyone know exactly when and why Beta tapes changed their names from K's to L's? The K's at least gave you a good indicator of length, like the K-60s held 60 minutes at Beta I, but I've never been able to figure out the Ls.)
@wmbrown6 I remember when San Francisco had 2-KTVU,4,5,7,9-PBS and 44. Soul Train was originally simultaneously released in the SF Bay area and I think 12 other markets. I was lucky as a kid. I do remember Soul Train running back to back with "Hee Haw" or "Lawrence Welk" in a complete contrast of genres.
Many of the moves that constituted "break dancing" appear to have been derived from the dances that originated within Russia and the Ukraine, and the European Jewish community (if one saw old clips of the Soviet Army Chorus and Band as seen within: watch?v=BvnJS_zkaMY - or at the very least, the 1943 film "Lady of Burlesque" with Barbara Stanwyck, as seen within: watch?v=IOibSeDyrMo ).

WNEW-TV (channel 5) in New York City used to aired "Soul Train" back in around 1977. This was before my time.

Another then-CBS affiliate aired ST, when I lived in Durham, NC, and that was WTVD channel 11.

Would anyone know which stations, if any, aired "Soul Train" and "Hee Haw" back to back? Now THERE would've been a combo . . . ;)
