The 4 Sonic Games (originally released for the Genesis) are ported and collected into Sonic Mega Collection for the Nintendo GameCube along with 3 others.
I am a 16-bit Sonic fan. While Mario is fun and I can't deny playing way too much Mario Kart, at the end of the day, Sonic had better games period. I'd rather save a planet from a mad scientist/dictator than a passive aggressive princess from a bumbling turtle/dragon thing. Sonic 2 was the highlight of the Sonic series for me. Mario 3 on NES was the highlight of the Mario series.
Sonic wins because of the Mega CD and sonic 3&knuckles. Sonic CD was actually probably the best game on the Mega CD and Sonic 3&Knuckles was even better than that. Coupled with this, the Sega Genesis wireless controller is the single best controller ever made. As comfortable as the three-button, but as reliable and practical as the six-button, and with no wires and the second best D-pad, after the Sega Saturn. Perfect for fighters and platformers. Plus Genesis, IMO, rapes SNES.
@PrrrromotionGiven my dad segacd and dreamcast he got screwed over twice since segacd only lasted like 6 months and dreamcast *lol* who ever must have been charge when making the dreamcast shouldnt even make games. i mean absolutely no piracy protection oh sega you sure did like to screw ppl over. as for saturn lol it was either ps1 or n64. even thought it could have had potential too bad sega made it :( genesis was the only decent console they made that lasted
@Boomkittyrocks Hey, I prefer the Dreamcast to the Genesis personally. I just ignore the piracy, except if I want a unreleased game like Half-Life. And no offence but you sound quite biased against Sega :P
@MrMizz007 Mario barely tied in the 32/64-bit console war, but completely fumbled the 128-bit war and the Wii is slowly starting to stagnate as it is clearly a fad that isn't as popular anymore (like the mullet). Sonic is still extremely popular and Sega was smart to drop out of the console race to focus on making what made them popular in the first place, Sonic! Mario has very few platform games now. Most games that feature him are rpgs or party games...
Mario having few platform games isn't really anything new. The 3-4 on the NES was as plentiful as it got. From then on on, it was pretty much 1-2, excluding remakes, per system until the Wii, which has three. As every single one of those three have been enormously popular and critically acclaimed, I don't see where the series has fumbled.
Let's face it, after the Genesis, the Sonic series has never given Super Mario Bros. a serious run for its money.
Maybe Nintendo should drop out of the console race and focus on what made them popular; Mario! Even Nintendo's 3ds isn't selling that well. They've already dropped the price by $70 in the first 4 months it's been out! That's not a good sign for Nintendo as they've been pretty dominant in the handheld market.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles wins this round, clearly. Everything in that game was immaculate, especially graphics, colour and sound. Wierdly, every game I like seems to have good music 0_o
mario and sonic took over my childhoodi could never pick one over the other it would be like trying to pick one of your kids over the other just not possible for me lol
SEGA fan here, but I will say Mario World was magical when I was young. Can't stand it now...feels to babyish, but I still love the sonic games. A bit more *appealing*. But respects to Nintendo.
The way I look at things is: Always support the underdog. The one that does not rely on marketing to sell it's product. It's normally the better machine.
Okay, You put 2 Games of Mario in the list, and put, almost all games of Sonic. I don't see Sonic Spinball here... and you put 2 entire minutes of Sonic CD. And None of Mario RPG, Kart, All Stars.
I don't give a shit for this war. Because I Had (and still Have =D ) a SNES and my Friend Had a MegaDrive. I played both, both are great! NEXT time, remember to try to be impartial. Show the good side of both characters.
@UrashimaHauro You do realize that Sonic CD AUTOMATICLY beats almost all classic mario games. And what exactly is wrong with Sonic Spinball, cause the way you were stating it, it sounded like a diss, but you should know it wasnt that bad of a game. Im a diehard sonic fan but i usually dont diss mario games that much as i do promote classic sonic games, but in the end you are right, This list needs to show the good mario games from both the NES and SNES and the sonic games from the MD and SMS.
Well I liked SMB2 and 3 which were not featured and only 8 bit anyway and never cared for his 16 bit interactions. SMB3 was massive in it's explorations and his different worlds, especially on different sized worlds, they were unique and fun. However, I also did not like Sonic after part 2. It just all felt the same after that. So if we are just talking 16 bit , Sonic wins.
The 16 bit Sonic games were all the same thing over and over. Run, jump. no exploration involved. no depth, just speed and more speed. You can barely even enjoy the levels. Super Mario World had depth, exploration, puzzles, secret levels, passages, environments, etc. and Yoshi's Island played like a wholly different game. also All-Stars was 4 games in one, (remakes of the NES games). the first game and lost levels were pretty straightforward but SMB2 and 3 had so much depth and creativity.
@DarkRetroFan64 Nintendo actually put effort into making the different Mario games feel different, and continue to do that to this day. in Sonic's case though, every game was "tilt right and jump" nothing other than that, really. 5 games of the same thing (Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles, CD) really loses it's entertainment value fast. just one 16 bit mario game beats every Genesis Sonic game combined.
@TornadoCreator "shut up fanboy" ha ha ha that's funny. You have no argument so your just gonna make some stupid kiddy remark. wow, that's just sad. I was actually kinda hoping someone could prove my statement wrong about all the Sonic games being the same, but I guess I was actually right about that. Do you really get this angry just cause some people don't like your precious Sonic? you should learn not to take games seriously.
I said "shut up fanboy" because you're a fucking fanboy. If you paid attention you'd know that on the 'MARIO VS SONIC 8 BIT' video I claimed Mario won hands down. I don't deny that Mario was great at 8 bit, and still love S. Mario Bros. 2 and 3 to this day. The thing is, you claim to be a Retro Fan (your name) yet you don't have a clue when it comes to Sonic, you dismiss it like a rabid fanboy. Why? Because you're a fucking fanboy. Anyone with 2 working braincells can see that.
@TornadoCreator dude all i'm saying is that to me all the Sonic games play and feel the same, and i think they are bland and uninteresting. Dude, it's called an OPINION. I've actually played all those Sonic games and i notice little difference between them. They aren't horrible, they are ok (at least better than the new Sonics) but they are all essentially the same game. Your acting as if i came here and said "Mario Rulez Sonic Sucks Blah Blah" at least I gave sonic a chance.
Well it doesn't sound like you gave them a chance. Sure Sonic games are similar, and they are a platforming cliché, but Sonic created that cliché. It's fun to run though the levels with speed, and it take good timing and skill to get through the later levels. Now I agree, the 3D games were crap and the 2D GBA games were 'hold right, win'. But the Mario SNES game didn't build on the NES games, and with Sonic being the classic that it is, they surely rate higher.
@TornadoCreator well I guess that can be somewhat debatable, many people think Mario world is great. I think it's great but at the same time it took a step backwards from SMB3 so i get what you mean about that. Although, the only areas that I found weaker than SMB3 is the fact that you can't store items, and that there aren't as many levels/power-ups. But I think it's made up considering there are more secrets and levels are bigger & more diverse, and also the addition of the Yoshis.
I won't deny it's a fun game, but honestly, I found the difficulty curve odd, the levels felt like they lost character from SMB3 and the cape was no where near as good as the racoon. I also found Yoshi made the game too easy. Really it's down to preference. I personally prefer Sonic. I even prefer the original 8-bit Sonic, (but can admit, objectively Mario was better). But I felt Nintendo dropped the ball after NES until their new games on the Wii.
@TornadoCreator actually sonic wasn't originally 8-bit they just made 8-bit versions of Sonic 1 and 2 so that people who had master system could play Sonic.
No they didn't the 8 bit Sonic games came after the first 16 bit game yes, but they where not master system versions they where completely different games, different level designs, different special stages, and the master system games where a lot less about speed. Everyone always says they where 8-bit "versions", has anyone who says this ever fucking played them?
So we had 5 Sonic games, one Mario game (and Yoshi's Island to make up the numbers). On top of that you missed out Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast. Quite frankly, Sonic RAPED Mario when 16-bit came along. Not until the 3D games did Mario make a comeback, and even then Sonic Adventure is better than Mario 64. Mario was king of the 8-bit games, but he was destroyed when Sonic shown up.
You know what they say, quality over quantity. I was a Genesis man back in the day, but it seems to me that Super Mario World's legacy seems to be more enduring. You pick up a magazine like EDGE, Retro Gamer, etc., and their Top whatever lists almost always have SMW near the top.
Oh, and uh, no offense, but Sonic Adventure barely belongs in the same sentence as SM64. It was a nice game, but it had nowhere near the massive impact of SM64.
I will agree that Mario is by far more of an impact with 3D games now and with spin offs. Mario Kart Wii is better than Sonic Riders 2 and Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 are miles better than any recent Sonic game. That said I have to disagree with you here. Sonic games at 16 bit where classic. Mario has only one game, and it was mediocre. Yes all the magazines claim Super Mario World was great but compared to Super Mario Bros. 3 it felt like a step backwards. (...see next comment)
@TornadoCreator ...back to 2D. While I also preferred SMB3 to SMW, it wasn't really mediocre, just not as fresh and new as Sonic. I also missed the zaniness of SMB3's powerups and drastically different worlds, but I can look past that and see a rock solid game with a deceptive amount of depth in the form of secret levels, alternate routes, and multiple exits. At the end of the day, it offers a different experience than Sonic. Now is it too much to assume you don't like games to be too nonlinear?
As for the 3D games. I never understand why everyone goes bat-shit insane over Mario 64. The game wasn't very good. It felt like loads of little mini-games. There where no straight forward platforming levels, it was all about completing silly challenges for stars. Sonic Adventure and Crash Bandicoot where considerably better. They still had collectables, but they had liner goals and didn't feel as muddled. Mario 64 is exceptionally over-rated.
@TornadoCreator Ever hear the one about Sonic Adventure's manual? One page, one sentence: "Tilt the control stick up." While I'm not saying it's that shallow, Mario 64's "minigames" and "silly challenges" have a lot more depth as platformers go. If you can't understand why SM64 is near universally lauded, I can't understand the few who could place SA anywhere on SM64's level. I will never forget the look of wonder on people's faces when they first began walking in the courtyard on demo kiosks.
@TornadoCreator dude all the Genesis Sonic games are pretty much the same. Mario had different flavors & feels with each game, Super Mario World & Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi Island) are COMPLETELY different, and the 4 NES games (except SMB1 and Lost levels which were pretty much the same) also had different feels from each other. I'd take SMW, SMW2 & All-Stars anyday over the entire genesis Sonic library, because Sonic's already dull gameplay never changed, it was the same thing over & over.
again, it depends mostly on which you had at the time; and at the time it was very rare to have BOTH Sega and Nintendo consoles, so it was always one or the other
I had Sonic 1 and 2 myself ... but without being biased I can definitely say Sonic won the 16-bit battle!! the game was fucking mind-blowing at the time!!
16-bit Mario was basically Mario Kart and 16-bit revamps of the 8-bit NES Mario games
@CheapBeer09 And you know what? Super Mario Kart alone still spunks all over Sonic. What's more mindblowing, a platformer that's a response to Mario in itself, or a Kart-racer that actually defined Kart-racing as a standalone genre?
To each his own on what you prefer, but Nintendo thought more outside the box with their 16-bit Mario games, no doubt about it.
Mario wins the 8-bit era because... well, there wasnt much compition back in the 80's , but Sonic just killed the compition with the games incredible sence of speed in the 16-bit era :D
Sonic was more of a gimmick to me half the time your trying to control his speed..leaving little time for exploration and those dam rings having to pick um up every time you get hit..scrambling....there was no map no idea where your going(which is fun in a way)..the bad guys in mario are way more memorable than sonic..i mean i cant think of one other than robotnic off the top of my head..the whole game was flash and wonderment.while mario was had depth
I know Mario fans are gonna hate for saying this but I prefer to play Sonic 1 and 2 over super mario world it's not that SMW was a bad game it's just the level design feels oddly bland for a Mario game where as in Sonic 1 and 2 the levels felt fun and refreshing to play. the loss of so many of his power ups from super mario bros 3 didn't help things either lol
I prefer Mario because you can slow down and explore to level and find new things
and despite the fact that i enjoy sonic... you can't really explore when your running at full speed, sure there's hidden passage ways, but it's not as fun to slow down in sonic and explore, because the experience comes from the fast paced game play. BTW dude, no hate, we b cool :3, not that this comment had a point, i just like to think sonic and mario fans can get along instead of always arguing.
@themanofpureawesome True, But I'm more a guy who likes speed over exploration which is why I also prefer Megaman over Metroid. It's really just a matter of taste those who like speed will prefer Sonic those who like exploration will like Mario, me my favorite isn't even one of those two mine is the DKC series because I felt it had a good blend of both.
Mario wins in my opinion,i sure love the 2D sidecrolling Sonics as well, but without Mario and Nintendo owning the video game market for years Sega would'nt have had thought of creating a mascot to compete with Mario...so all I have to say Super Mario World has more levels than all those Sonic games put together,96 levels or exits to be exact,and Mario is an innovative and inspiration for all the game mascots after him(im looking at u sonic) :)
I really don't know how the concept of mario ever caught on! I mean a over weight middle aged Italian plummer wit a B-movie moustach chasing after a peace of ass whos clearly out of his league whalst his loser brother taggs allong for no real reason other than mario (been italian) probly sed he could watch!... Sonic rules!!!
Sonic will cream that red fat Italian plumber into butter, if you pit Mario against him!
SSBB does NOT matter! Sonic will win without the need of using any items or equipment like the Chaos Emeralds to defeat Mario. He got speed, skills and strategy!
Everything in Super Smash Bros Brawl is off: the weaker characters are made more capable and the best characters are "drummed" down. In my opinion, Bowser and Donkey Kong rule the roost. My most character is Mario; however, I never really did care for Sonic.
Sega Megadrive came out in 1990 in UK, and the SNES in 1992. I got my Megadrive in 1992 with Sonic and the SNES in 1993 with Super Mario World. I love both games and still have the consoles. I think Sonic & Mario's newer games are not as good as the older games. Mario wins in 8-bit, Sonic is better in 16-bit.
16-bit Sonic & Mario are equally great! I truly cant picture a world without either of them. Their games are the essence of platforming. Imagine though what Miyamoto could do with Sonic! And imagine a Sega Vs Nintendo Smash Bros. game. I want to buy it already!
@MegaSonicKing dude you got it all wrong sega released the genesis/mega drive in 1989 (in japan) and the super nintendo came out in 1991 do research before you comment noob
back then when snes were new i own an snes most of my friends did :P and well i own an gen also now. :) ye sonic is an fun game, but i rather play mario,
Sonic CD was awesome and was my favorite out of them all. It's kind of unfair to compare cartridges to CDs though. Mario games in general had better gameplay and controls. Sonic Games were more flashy and the speed did lend to constant running into objects or off of cliffs, but it was still easier to beat and usually had a lot more content and replay value for me personally. Once I beat a Mario game, I really had no interest in playing them again.
why isn't Sonic the hedgehog (number One) done in the correct speed!?! i play this game now, and the game is slowed down!!! The music is a dead give away!!!
fan boys, let's look at the facts.... when sega bundled Sonic with the system sega took the 90% home division from NES and knocked it back to 35% (sega got 65% naturally) to promote sonic they went to malls with both games and found children preferred the coke addled pin cushion; although mario won the war, the 16 bit battle goes to the blue one. Also the 50$ cheaper helped, employing pop stars for the music, and a faster frame rate due to sega's arcade expertise (Sega owned the arcade market)
wait wait wait. i might be confused but the nes was 8 bit so that stays out of the 16 bit war. 2d sonic games can't compare to mario games. Super mario world sold more games than sonic, sonic 2, sonic 3, and sonic and knuckles combined according to wikipedia.
Nes is a company as well as a system- and i hate to tell you, no, sonic rocked it- and propelled that system to the 65% home console when it came out *information obtained from the history of sonic mini doc- if it was incorrect they would be held libel*.... as far as not being able to compare, well duh! there 2 different games! Sonic depends on very sharp response time and a rapid frame rate that SNes just doesn't have. Mario was already an established brand, so they added a lot of bells and
whistles. Dinosaurs that eat things when you bunch them in the back of the head and depending on the colour of the shell get different powers (kind of a Kirby rip off but nevermind), feathers (not as fun as the raccoon tail imo) As well, Super Mario world was a bundle same with sonic, how do you know that isn't effecting it? ie more people purchased the game itself (lost/broken) or they're including the SNES bundle but not Sonic (which wasn't a bundle title at first)
@davstec3 "i enjoy that about sonic too until it runs you off a cliff, into an enemy, or into some spikes. that is when i hate sonic"- point justified, stop marking this guy down!
LOL - i think i'm proving more that sonic fans are kind of assholes
hey i didn't mark that guy down. I like sonic games. they are fun especially sonic 2 and 3. i'm just saying i like super mario world more. it just so happens that i like super mario 3 more than any other mario or sonic game ever.
@davstec3 not neccesarilly I like them both equally because I can't really compare them they are just too different but I know a lot of people who are mario fans who aren't fat.
sega wants to put sonic away. and never wants to make another sonic game cause no one likes the newer sonic games. every new mario game that has been comeing out everyone likes =]

Shut up fanboy.
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator "shut up fanboy" ha ha ha that's funny. You have no argument so your just gonna make some stupid kiddy remark. wow, that's just sad. I was actually kinda hoping someone could prove my statement wrong about all the Sonic games being the same, but I guess I was actually right about that. Do you really get this angry just cause some people don't like your precious Sonic? you should learn not to take games seriously.
DarkRetroFan64 1 year ago
@DarkRetroFan64
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator dude all i'm saying is that to me all the Sonic games play and feel the same, and i think they are bland and uninteresting. Dude, it's called an OPINION. I've actually played all those Sonic games and i notice little difference between them. They aren't horrible, they are ok (at least better than the new Sonics) but they are all essentially the same game. Your acting as if i came here and said "Mario Rulez Sonic Sucks Blah Blah" at least I gave sonic a chance.
DarkRetroFan64 1 year ago
@DarkRetroFan64
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator well I guess that can be somewhat debatable, many people think Mario world is great. I think it's great but at the same time it took a step backwards from SMB3 so i get what you mean about that. Although, the only areas that I found weaker than SMB3 is the fact that you can't store items, and that there aren't as many levels/power-ups. But I think it's made up considering there are more secrets and levels are bigger & more diverse, and also the addition of the Yoshis.
DarkRetroFan64 1 year ago
@DarkRetroFan64
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator actually sonic wasn't originally 8-bit they just made 8-bit versions of Sonic 1 and 2 so that people who had master system could play Sonic.
DarkRetroFan64 1 year ago
@DarkRetroFan64
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
So we had 5 Sonic games, one Mario game (and Yoshi's Island to make up the numbers). On top of that you missed out Sonic Spinball and Sonic 3D Blast. Quite frankly, Sonic RAPED Mario when 16-bit came along. Not until the 3D games did Mario make a comeback, and even then Sonic Adventure is better than Mario 64. Mario was king of the 8-bit games, but he was destroyed when Sonic shown up.
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator
It was a nice game, but it had nowhere near the massive impact of SM64.
dunnono00 1 year ago
@dunnono00
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator ...back to 2D. While I also preferred SMB3 to SMW, it wasn't really mediocre, just not as fresh and new as Sonic. I also missed the zaniness of SMB3's powerups and drastically different worlds, but I can look past that and see a rock solid game with a deceptive amount of depth in the form of secret levels, alternate routes, and multiple exits. At the end of the day, it offers a different experience than Sonic. Now is it too much to assume you don't like games to be too nonlinear?
dunnono00 1 year ago
@dunnono00
(see previous comment....)
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator Ever hear the one about Sonic Adventure's manual? One page, one sentence: "Tilt the control stick up." While I'm not saying it's that shallow, Mario 64's "minigames" and "silly challenges" have a lot more depth as platformers go. If you can't understand why SM64 is near universally lauded, I can't understand the few who could place SA anywhere on SM64's level. I will never forget the look of wonder on people's faces when they first began walking in the courtyard on demo kiosks.
dunnono00 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator dude all the Genesis Sonic games are pretty much the same. Mario had different flavors & feels with each game, Super Mario World & Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi Island) are COMPLETELY different, and the 4 NES games (except SMB1 and Lost levels which were pretty much the same) also had different feels from each other. I'd take SMW, SMW2 & All-Stars anyday over the entire genesis Sonic library, because Sonic's already dull gameplay never changed, it was the same thing over & over.
DarkRetroFan64 1 year ago
@DarkRetroFan64
Super Mario Bros 1, 2, 3 and lost levels don't count. They where 8-bit games. It's who has the best SIXTEEN BIT games.
TornadoCreator 1 year ago
@TornadoCreator ever heard of Super Mario all-Stars?
DarkRetroFan64 1 year ago
again, it depends mostly on which you had at the time; and at the time it was very rare to have BOTH Sega and Nintendo consoles, so it was always one or the other
I had Sonic 1 and 2 myself ... but without being biased I can definitely say Sonic won the 16-bit battle!! the game was fucking mind-blowing at the time!!
16-bit Mario was basically Mario Kart and 16-bit revamps of the 8-bit NES Mario games
Also LOL at the Sonic CD Engrish theme song!!
CheapBeer09 1 year ago
@CheapBeer09 And you know what? Super Mario Kart alone still spunks all over Sonic. What's more mindblowing, a platformer that's a response to Mario in itself, or a Kart-racer that actually defined Kart-racing as a standalone genre?
To each his own on what you prefer, but Nintendo thought more outside the box with their 16-bit Mario games, no doubt about it.

Mario wins the 8-bit era because... well, there wasnt much compition back in the 80's , but Sonic just killed the compition with the games incredible sence of speed in the 16-bit era :D

BTW dude, no hate, we b cool :3, not that this comment had a point, i just like to think sonic and mario fans can get along instead of always arguing.
themanofpureawesome 11 months ago

@Armalizilto

Once I beat a Mario game, I really had no interest in playing them again.
chjoezen 2 years ago 2
On that note-
why isn't Sonic the hedgehog (number One) done in the correct speed!?! i play this game now, and the game is slowed down!!! The music is a dead give away!!!
sayastra 2 years ago
fan boys, let's look at the facts.... when sega bundled Sonic with the system sega took the 90% home division from NES and knocked it back to 35% (sega got 65% naturally) to promote sonic they went to malls with both games and found children preferred the coke addled pin cushion; although mario won the war, the 16 bit battle goes to the blue one. Also the 50$ cheaper helped, employing pop stars for the music, and a faster frame rate due to sega's arcade expertise (Sega owned the arcade market)
sayastra 2 years ago
wait wait wait. i might be confused but the nes was 8 bit so that stays out of the 16 bit war. 2d sonic games can't compare to mario games. Super mario world sold more games than sonic, sonic 2, sonic 3, and sonic and knuckles combined according to wikipedia.
tatripp 2 years ago
