True story. Some Air Force jets were sent up to play tag with a UFO and were chasing it around, when an eerie voice came on the radio and said the last name of one of the pilots. I believed this creeped them out considerably. UFOs are common enough, but not ones that say things on the radio.

@pithor I guess 'This is better than nothing' is not enough for you.
A phenomenon is what it is, a rare occurrence that humans never or rarely get to see, hear, and/or experience, and this is a phenomenon for SETI to get a signal like this. It's better than nothing, right? :)
@pithor because the signal was unlike anything previously observed. what's more, the first quasar to be discovered was originally thought to be an alien signal. they don't make assumptions on sparse info. they have been trying to find a similar signal. additionally, the signal itself has properties that are consistent with artificial radio sources, so astronomers searched for transmissions, but the signal was in a band not used by humans. they're saying it MAY have been a radio signal from ET
It hasn't been proven yet but the most likely cause of the signal was radio interference nearby or tele-communications from an airport. I highly expect there is other life out there, but just little micro organisms, not big eyed aliens... That's just my opinion, noone really knows...

seti didn't locate the 'wow signal', The Big Ear in Ohio did.
This isn't the first sign of any extraterrestrial contact either. It could have been a number of things with the most promising being a reflection of an earth sourced signal reflecting off of a piece of space debris.
es una faena de la hostia para encontrar una señal, es peor que encontrar una aguja en un pajar... aunque me parece muy interesante y con mucho merito, conocer todo tipo de frecuencias y investigarlo.
if this was sent from 200 light years then this was sent b4 we had any transmitter and receiver tech. if this is E.T origin then our closest inter galactic civilisation ( that we know of) is probly 200-300 years ahead of us. correct me if im wrong
@awsom10010:11 "Coming from somewhere in the direction of the Sagittarius constelation, over 200 light years away." If they sent a signal that year, and there was intelligent life there, we would have to wait until at least 2377 for their response.
I don't want to offend anyone, but if extraterrestrial creatures would visit us, they would probably compare us with ants because there are only 11.92 non-religious and 2.35 atheists in this civilization. I'm not saying that religion is unintelligent, I mean more as a representative of humanity.
Sounds like it came from some spacecraft deep in space that crossed our frequency path at that very moment..and we were at the right place at the right time to catch it...interestingly, they never caught that signal again...hmmm.
It's fasinating if theres more life forms out there, but isnt it more fasinating that the distances are so far away? I mean, galaxies between are billion of light years, its like someones telling us that we are not supposed to meat eachother, so what would happend if we did.
Chances of a genuine detection of extraterrestrial intelligence are next to zero in my view. We only could recognize a signal if it was sent by a civilization that's not far more advanced than us but this can certainly be ruled out. If there are other civilizations - and that's a big if - they are bound to be millions, if not hundreds of millions, of years ahead of us. A civilization this advanced would certainly use communication methods way beyond human comprehension.
@istvanklein nothing prevents the fact that we may be the older ones in our neightborhood, every single planet of Alpha Centaury could be habitated, but if they don't have the technology to recive our signals, the result would be the same. It could also explain why we haven't been properly visited. (I like to always point out to that possibility to break the image that aliens are necessarily older than humans :) ).
@pamsp good points, but I think the reason we haven't been visited by intelligent aliens is because there is no practical way to overcome the vast distances between the stars. I hope I'm wrong about that. I also think the galaxy has billions of planets with at least single-celled life. Millions of those will have complex life(plants and aninals). A few hundred of those will have intelligent life. A handful of those will have technological civilizations.
@istvanklein But yeah, I agree with what you're saying, but I think if they wanted to comunicate they would find a way, we can kinda comunicate with chimps so... why not them with us?
@pamsp Very true, but then humans and chimps share something like 98% of their genes and a relatively recent common ancestor, whereas humans and any prospective aliens that might be out there couldn't possibly have anything in common. And given the enormous possible timescale, chances are that they are so far ahead of us that the gap between us and them dwarfs the gap between us and the chimps.
@pamsp All in all, chances are skewed towards them being much, much older than humans. Their civilization can easily be billions of years older than ours, but can't be billions of years younger if we assume that life needs several billion years to evolve from early life forms into complex society.
@istvanklein hum, yeah I see your point, if we use earth evolution as base (which honestly is probably incorrect but how the hell are we supposed to use another base?) they're more likely to be older then younger. And about the gap, it is possible, they could be so alien that we don't even reconize each other as life forms, but if our evolution was anything alike, they would be able to indentify us as life forms, as we are able to indetifying virus as life forms. I hate 520 chars limit, hehe
@istvanklein I don't agree. Wouldn't a more advanced civilization know they need to send a simple signal that less advanced civs would be able to recognize as artificial? On the other hand, they may feel like civs need to be at certain tech level to be "worthy" to receive it.
@tron81 You make a completely valid point but this is based on the assumption that ET will specifically target the Earth with their message which, in my view, is something that's very, very unlikely. If they are more than seventy light years away, which is almost certain if they exist at all, they wouldn't even know we are here as the outer edge of our "radio bubble" has yet to reach them.
@istvanklein that's true about our radio transmissions. My thinking is that any technological civilization wanting to send messages to other technological civilizations would find stars that have terrestrial(earth-like) planets in the habitable zone and target them for any signals sent out. They wouldn't have to know there is a tech civ here to see the Earth as a possibly habitable planet.
@tron81 Yes, that's certainly a possibility. But I think that the most likely way to find ET is eavesdropping on any random signal that accidentally comes our way. Like the Wow signal. Sadly, however, it is much more likely that we will never hear anything. This is an impossibly long shot. There may be billions of planets harbouring microbial life but getting from there to intelligence requires a sequence of events so improbable that it might well have happened just once in this galaxy.
I talked to the guy that was there and he said he believes it was a was a alien probe transmitting a burst transmission back to point of origin, where ever that is!
@KC8YOQ you actually met the Wow guy? Wow! lol. Did he think the alien probe was near to the earth when it sent the transmission back to its point of origin? A nearby probe would explain the incredible power of the signal if we assume it came from hundreds of light years away.
@tron81 He thought that the "probe" was passing through our system. It relayed ,in a burst transmission, where our system is and how many planets etc! That is why he thought it was close in to us. It was probably transmitting its data on a schedule and just happen to do it while it was near us. It was traveling so fast that the next time it "talked" it was beyond our hearing range!
@gr8Sweetfox If we rickrolled the aliens, they'll be so pissed off that they'll send their battle fleet to earth and alienroll our planet to smithereens.
@gr8Sweetfox The message will still only travel the speed of light, being 200 light years away it will take 200 years. But you raise a good point they could use a time warp to get back at us :P
what no one seems to realize is that a radio or t.v. signal traveling out into space degrades and becomes washed in with other celestial radiation and RF interference. if we sent a receiver over to the nearest star to capture our own signals. all we would get is bits and pieces of it. you wouldn't get actual data in the form of a radio broadcast or t.v show. just fragments enough to know their not natural, but that is it.
How about a " burst transmission " ??? , I mean, imagine some....thing ( alien ? ) picks up THIS transmission ( a whole bunch of high speed binary ) , ......what would THEY think at first ???? Would they be able to decode it ??? ....would they derive " intelligence " out of it ???. I
If I wanted to communicate over vast distance, I would use a very brief, high powered " burst transmission " . Maybe it contains " data " .
@tasman763 still wouldn't work... radio and t.v. signals traveling out into space degrade and become washed in with other celestial radiation and RF interference. the only way we'll likely be able to communicate over such vast distances is to further develop our broadcast spectrum to include the full range of possible transmission waves. then like and email. we chop it up into pieces and reassemble it on the other side.
P2. -t will happen all over the world. Peoples will live in fear, panic attack will happen in case of attack from other solar system. Many thing might occurs, who know what.
If? if? aliens or other form of intelligent life did exist and they know we are here. I don't think they give a shit about us. There communication might not be similar to us. They could might have visited us in past who knows? they way of life might be totally difference then us, we breath air, they might breath gas, who knows what?
May be government of USA has found something long ago and still hiding from us.
Just imagine, if we knew there are other form of intelligent life out there, wha
@useemeat2007 Nasa hasnt yet released the information public, dont know why, BUT Dimitar Sasselov one of the men behind the Keplertelescope made the statement already this summer on a conferanse in Oxford that they had found what he called about 140 candidates to earth, around diffrent suns in the milkeyway. The Keplertelescope has proved that our planet isnt uniqe and that it is common with exoplanets like earth there for it proberly is common with life aswell. Sorry for bad english.
humans are having a message thats going into space since 1945:
Nuclear explosions causing intense blips on a "radar screen" that may be observed by aliens.
In a distance within 65 lightyears a nuke flash will more likely be received than a "tiny" radio transmission. So if we really want to be noticed by possible aliens we should set off a kinda prime number sequence of nukes.
I friend of mine who worked for NASA told me that something along those lines is being contemplated for sometime around 2020 providing funding is available. Most likely it will not happen. Besides, if an advanced civilization exists somewhere nearby, they know we are here and simply do not give a shit. Why should they?
@H3TCykaCT0 They dont need to give a shit, but since we give a shit they would understand that we give a shit, so then they would show themselfs or something, but they dont. They just keep the refrigerators running.
@H3TCykaCT0 Well , first of all, a foreign blue planet with people on it may be interesting,(if it is for us at the distance) i don;t see why it shouldn't be for "aliens"
If the WOW signal was a low powered intermittent Benford Beacon; then it could be detected again with constant observation of the same spot in the sky. Why is this not being done?
Why is it so many of you are saying that the signal was either a government hoax to justify a costly project or it was a natural space phenomenon. Get real! This signal was very real and is not a natural occurrence! Get your head out your arses and actually entertain the thought of other intelligent life apart from arrogant deluded Humans! Arseholes.
@DaveandNic4eva i know, of course there might be things that the government is doing behind our backs but seriously i have faith in this signal and this "wow signal" is absolutely amazing i can't fucking believe it!
@Deathanddamnation somebody used to talk to the ancient Cabalist. I am not sure the Jehovah your thinking of is the same one. As our knowledge of him has been manipulated by the peculiar arrangement of documents we know of as the bible.
@gigipah I'm sorry about that. i don't even remember posting that comment, i must have had a few drinks. I think it must have been a joke, like from the film called "the life of Brian".
@DeadlyMACD they could have been at our technology level, and dis was like a TV show or something. but they may have been at war, and blown themselves up killing an entire race or maybe an asteroid. or maybe we will here it again in 200 years.

PUESTO QUE AHORA MISMO ESTAN ENTRE NOSOTROS Y SI ASI FUERA LOS HUBIERAN DETECTADO, QUE ESTAN AQUI NO BUSQUEIS FUERA .
Alien: Rzup? Human: Rzup Other alien: ELIZUP! ELIZUP! Human: yes we are life forms Alien: zip zup other alien: zip zip zip zap tra ze verith alien: rzup other alien: rzup human: what? you coming to visit alien(350 years later): zup rzup human: ALIEN! STARSHIP! ON EARTH?! alien: rzup fup mezoop
The Wow! signal is just an attempt to justify such a costly agency. What is really interesting is not the finding of this signal, but the discoveries that SETI has not made public.
@IWishICouldChangeIt um, SETI is not funded by the government, though few of such projects were funded before 90s, and in any case if a government agency did make an interesting find, surely that is a genuine justification for some amount of budget? How can you know about such discoveries if they were not made public?
According scientists it's more than a mirale (heh heh) that we have evolved to our current status. This happening somewhere else has so minimal change that studying things like this IS waste of time.
It seems unlikely to be a signal between two ships. We would use a large antenna on the ground to beam a signal to a spaceship, or probe, which would have a smaller low-power antenna. Spacecraft send back weaker signals which we pick up with large ground-based telescopes. In a similar manner, they could be sending things out to their outer planets.
i just decode it. the numbers and letters that we received from then are the alphabet of the aliens send too us for learning there language. they knew we could decode it .thats why its also called WOW. because they are amazed of us.
they are either really nice or really mean. maybe there is both, and we cold meet the nice ones first, and have allies. if aliens can come here, we better be nice!
@Bomburk Maybe it is unpossible to decode such signals. You need something like the rosette stone to translate a unknown language. Maybe you can only share mathematic things on this way.
@Bomburk The Rosetta Stone is an Ancient Egyptian artifact which was instrumental in advancing modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphic writing. More in WiKI

why would they spend that much money to build those telescope? unless, they know that spending that much money would one day pays..perhaps the government knows something that prompted the scientists around the world to point all their telescopes to the sky and search for a sign of alien civilizations. or atleast life

base it off proven algorythms and you have a dupliction of the universe inside a computer.
immerse yourself in this universe and explore it.

@awsom1001 0:11 "Coming from somewhere in the direction of the Sagittarius constelation, over 200 light years away." If they sent a signal that year, and there was intelligent life there, we would have to wait until at least 2377 for their response.
conscript125 1 year ago
I don't want to offend anyone, but if extraterrestrial creatures would visit us, they would probably compare us with ants because there are only 11.92 non-religious and 2.35 atheists in this civilization. I'm not saying that religion is unintelligent, I mean more as a representative of humanity.
JugglerPLL 1 year ago
send them back something!!!! send them some reggae...lol...but seriously send another message back to them!
ThatsBooji 1 year ago
Sounds like it came from some spacecraft deep in space that crossed our frequency path at that very moment..and we were at the right place at the right time to catch it...interestingly, they never caught that signal again...hmmm.
tom11zz884 1 year ago
It's fasinating if theres more life forms out there, but isnt it more fasinating that the distances are so far away? I mean, galaxies between are billion of light years, its like someones telling us that we are not supposed to meat eachother, so what would happend if we did.
nils4545 1 year ago
Chances of a genuine detection of extraterrestrial intelligence are next to zero in my view. We only could recognize a signal if it was sent by a civilization that's not far more advanced than us but this can certainly be ruled out. If there are other civilizations - and that's a big if - they are bound to be millions, if not hundreds of millions, of years ahead of us. A civilization this advanced would certainly use communication methods way beyond human comprehension.
istvanklein 1 year ago
@istvanklein nothing prevents the fact that we may be the older ones in our neightborhood, every single planet of Alpha Centaury could be habitated, but if they don't have the technology to recive our signals, the result would be the same. It could also explain why we haven't been properly visited. (I like to always point out to that possibility to break the image that aliens are necessarily older than humans :) ).
pamsp 1 year ago
@pamsp good points, but I think the reason we haven't been visited by intelligent aliens is because there is no practical way to overcome the vast distances between the stars. I hope I'm wrong about that. I also think the galaxy has billions of planets with at least single-celled life. Millions of those will have complex life(plants and aninals). A few hundred of those will have intelligent life. A handful of those will have technological civilizations.
tron81 11 months ago
@istvanklein But yeah, I agree with what you're saying, but I think if they wanted to comunicate they would find a way, we can kinda comunicate with chimps so... why not them with us?
pamsp 1 year ago
@pamsp Very true, but then humans and chimps share something like 98% of their genes and a relatively recent common ancestor, whereas humans and any prospective aliens that might be out there couldn't possibly have anything in common. And given the enormous possible timescale, chances are that they are so far ahead of us that the gap between us and them dwarfs the gap between us and the chimps.
istvanklein 1 year ago
@pamsp All in all, chances are skewed towards them being much, much older than humans. Their civilization can easily be billions of years older than ours, but can't be billions of years younger if we assume that life needs several billion years to evolve from early life forms into complex society.
istvanklein 1 year ago
@istvanklein hum, yeah I see your point, if we use earth evolution as base (which honestly is probably incorrect but how the hell are we supposed to use another base?) they're more likely to be older then younger. And about the gap, it is possible, they could be so alien that we don't even reconize each other as life forms, but if our evolution was anything alike, they would be able to indentify us as life forms, as we are able to indetifying virus as life forms. I hate 520 chars limit, hehe
pamsp 1 year ago
@istvanklein I don't agree. Wouldn't a more advanced civilization know they need to send a simple signal that less advanced civs would be able to recognize as artificial? On the other hand, they may feel like civs need to be at certain tech level to be "worthy" to receive it.
tron81 11 months ago
@tron81 You make a completely valid point but this is based on the assumption that ET will specifically target the Earth with their message which, in my view, is something that's very, very unlikely. If they are more than seventy light years away, which is almost certain if they exist at all, they wouldn't even know we are here as the outer edge of our "radio bubble" has yet to reach them.
istvanklein 11 months ago
@istvanklein that's true about our radio transmissions. My thinking is that any technological civilization wanting to send messages to other technological civilizations would find stars that have terrestrial(earth-like) planets in the habitable zone and target them for any signals sent out. They wouldn't have to know there is a tech civ here to see the Earth as a possibly habitable planet.
tron81 11 months ago
@tron81 Yes, that's certainly a possibility. But I think that the most likely way to find ET is eavesdropping on any random signal that accidentally comes our way. Like the Wow signal. Sadly, however, it is much more likely that we will never hear anything. This is an impossibly long shot. There may be billions of planets harbouring microbial life but getting from there to intelligence requires a sequence of events so improbable that it might well have happened just once in this galaxy.

KC8YOQ 1 year ago
@KC8YOQ you actually met the Wow guy? Wow! lol. Did he think the alien probe was near to the earth when it sent the transmission back to its point of origin? A nearby probe would explain the incredible power of the signal if we assume it came from hundreds of light years away.
tron81 11 months ago
@tron81 He thought that the "probe" was passing through our system. It relayed ,in a burst transmission, where our system is and how many planets etc! That is why he thought it was close in to us. It was probably transmitting its data on a schedule and just happen to do it while it was near us. It was traveling so fast that the next time it "talked" it was beyond our hearing range!

DanceroidCPTV 1 year ago
what no one seems to realize is that a radio or t.v. signal traveling out into space degrades and becomes washed in with other celestial radiation and RF interference. if we sent a receiver over to the nearest star to capture our own signals. all we would get is bits and pieces of it. you wouldn't get actual data in the form of a radio broadcast or t.v show. just fragments enough to know their not natural, but that is it.
governmentcheese411 1 year ago
How about a " burst transmission " ??? , I mean, imagine some....thing ( alien ? ) picks up THIS transmission ( a whole bunch of high speed binary ) , ......what would THEY think at first ???? Would they be able to decode it ??? ....would they derive " intelligence " out of it ???. I
If I wanted to communicate over vast distance, I would use a very brief, high powered " burst transmission " . Maybe it contains " data " .
tasman763 1 year ago
@tasman763 still wouldn't work... radio and t.v. signals traveling out into space degrade and become washed in with other celestial radiation and RF interference. the only way we'll likely be able to communicate over such vast distances is to further develop our broadcast spectrum to include the full range of possible transmission waves. then like and email. we chop it up into pieces and reassemble it on the other side.

humans are having a message thats going into space since 1945:
Nuclear explosions causing intense blips on a "radar screen" that may be observed by aliens.
In a distance within 65 lightyears a nuke flash will more likely be received than a "tiny" radio transmission. So if we really want to be noticed by possible aliens we should set off a kinda prime number sequence of nukes.
