  • There's a bar in Quezon City that plays 80's music. Care to join me?

  • Cool, but why are all the bands (minus Bananarama and Siouxsie Sioux, and to an extent Animotion) male bands? There were A LOT of female New Wave bands, Blondie was practically the founding New Wave band.

  • Other memorable groups include The Fixx, The B-52's, Talking Heads, Oingo-Boingo, Adam Ant, The Tubes...

  • Ah memories! What about Situation by Yaz, or Wouldn't It Be Nice by Nik Kershaw?

  • much better than the modern crap we got

  • @JURYJOHMZOMBIE Sad, but true.

  • @JURYJOHMZOMBIE anything after the year 2000 are garbage.....

  • You realize this was the "modern crap" in the 80s right?

  • @DeplorableBigot you are an idiot

  • @DuleKorleone Prove your assertion. I would imagine there was a sizeable amount of people in the 80s who viewed artists such as Duran Duran, Culture Club, Talking Heads, etc., the same way you view performers such as Brittany Spears, Justin Bieber, or Lady Gaga. But that doesn't change the fact that the quality of music in the 80's is on a continuum of good to bad, just like music in every decade, as is music in our current time.

  • @DeplorableBigot in the 1980s, new wave was an innovator new rock style, based on 1960s rock and roll to create the new sound of 1980s rock, new wave was also innovator about rock videos

britney spears is an electronic dance singer, justin bieber is a soul-dance singer and lady gaga is an electronic dance singer

in the1980s rock critics praised the quality of british new wave music,

the 2000s american rock stars as Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, or Lady Gaga does good music

  • @DeplorableBigot in the 1980s, new wave was an innovator new rock style, based on 1960s rock and roll to create the new sound of 1980s rock, new wave was also innovator about rock videos

  • @DeplorableBigot Modern crap of the 80's are way better than modern crap of today. Same for the 90's, those two decades just kill the 2000's and 2010's.

  • @Mr91OCB On what objective criteria are we to assert the purposed inferiority of contemporary popular music and the purposed superiority of the music of the 80's. You're using circular reasoning. You're treating your answer to my proposition as if it were a self-evident truth when you have not shown a clear and concise set of premises to substantiate your argument. Prove your assertion.

  • @DeplorableBigot Just take a look. How singers (women especially) only want to show their body, playing bitches. Listen to the lyrics. Today it's very rare to find a good music with nice lyrics in mainstream music. Look at the supposed best artists, as example, David Guetta who is supposed beeing the best dj at the moment. He makes his songs in 10 minutes, never touched an instrument and never even studied music. And such songs are best sellings. Just watcn Pitbull and you have all the argument

  • @Mr91OCB You're still using circular reasoning. You are conflating subjective taste with objective truth. What is the baseline for what is objectively good music? What are the characteristics that objectively define good music? What is this ephemeral thing that you call "good music"?

  • @Mr91OCB You provided the example of David Guetta, but what about say Alicia Keys? She is a multi-platinum selling artist, and not only has extensive training in musical theory, and can play the piano; she does it well. She began playing piano at the age of seven, and was studying Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart. She released her first album in 2001. She is intelligent, and a success as an artist both in sales of CDs and musically.

  • @DeplorableBigot Ok you don't want to see the truth i think. Watch one hour of mainstream MTV clips of the 80's. Maybe one or two stupid but still funny songs. Then, watch one hour of MTV's mainstream music of today (even if MTV isn't really a music tv today...wonder why^^). You can name me 10 good artists of today while i can name you a hundred of the 80's...and i didn't live the 80's...so sad i have to live with bullshit they call music today.

  • @Mr91OCB "Seen the truth"? You are treating your subjective opinion as an objective fundamentally sound self-evident truth; but you haven't provided anything as far as as an objective criteria for what we can use to assess the worth of music. Provide an objective set of premises that we can use to test your hypothesis. Provide scientific evidence sir, or otherwise we are forced to default to the option that you are talking out your ass.

  • @DeplorableBigot You know, it's like saying "Hitler was an asshole" it's subjective, but considered as true because of what he made. Same here, i say, Music today is by 80% crap, it's subjective, but true when you see the quality of the music it self (lyrics, instruments, the artist himslef etc). Now i wont stop you listening to bullshit, it's you right ;).

  • @Mr91OCB Invoking Godwin's Law eh? You just conceded my point. Your opinion is one of subjective taste. You can't point to any concrete objective (that is pertaining to unbiased, verifiably true) evidence for your premise. You cannot back up your assertions, and make passive insults about my tastes in music, when I have not said that the music in the era of the 80s was lacking in quality. You having a personal preference for music in the 80s isn't the issue here.

  • @DeplorableBigot i've learnt from reading your comments. that mr910cb doesnt seem to be aware of his own subjective tastes being different to intrinsic value. could we say that good music can only be measured on how much each person values it (ie decides to listen to it over other music and how much ie their priority) and how many people value it. that sounds a way to measure. though would be hard to get the data of everyone.

  • @TheStfu1000 Sounds about right. I wasn't trying to say that people don't have a right to enjoy a certain era of music; just if an individual is going to make a value assessment about anything subjective, such as musical taste, they better provide a set of objectively verifiable premises to test their hypothesis. Why are artists such as such as Devo and Duran Duran superior to say the likes of Alicia Keys, or say Coldplay? That is all I am trying to say.

  • @DeplorableBigot kl and btw i meant i've actually learnt more about things from reading your comments as in i agree with you and you're one of the few people that actually make sense to me. ie have that objective logical mindset like i think i do. perhaps when scientists understand the brain alot better because apparently we dont fully understand it yet, then these subjective things might be objectively verifiable but would be a strange time when that comes. what do you mean by the continuum?

  • @TheStfu1000 Do this perhaps. Listen to a favorite piece of music, and really think about what a piece of music means to you. Why does it touch you so? What was the artist trying to express? What state of being was the artist in when they made that piece of music? What are the attributes of said piece that appeal to you? Now use that as a barometer for a standard on what good music should be to you. And argue from that point.

  • @DeplorableBigot that would be arguing subjectively. i thought you were against that...

  • @TheStfu1000 What I am proposing is to intelligently examine what you listen to and understand why you like it. I think it's as close as we can get to being objective when it comes to what is 'good music'. Have other people who are knowledgeable in music theory as well as being musically competent test your hypothetical good music. Have them break it down mechanically as well. Expose as many people as you can to a wide variety of music as you can. Record your results and share.

  • @DeplorableBigot but essentially i think the objective quality of a music piece would come down to the quantative measurement of people's subjective like of music compared to their other music preferences. ie you measure what songs a person has listened to most over the decade and whether this was how they'd prioritise their listening ie it wasn't just by accident. and then you'd do this for a whole sample of people and then if all of them prioritise a certain song over others it must be good.

  • @TheStfu1000 Hmm, I will have to try this. Now I will have to find people who want to participate in the experiment.

  • @DeplorableBigot what is your profession may i ask?

  • @TheStfu1000 I am a student returning to college after a long hiatus. I am not a musician, though I am learning music fundamentals so I can better understand and appreciate the music I listen to. I am debating on whether I should pursue an education in endocrinology or gerontology.

  • @DeplorableBigot gerontology sounds more interesting but it seems a more softer science than endocrinology. i'd prefer to look up gerontology if i were teaching myself though if i had to be taught in a university, between those two id choose endocrinology, unless gerontology's examination method was good and unbiased to certain opinions and ways of delivering the opinion. i hate essays that demand 2500 words when really the matter should be simplified and understood in less.

  • @DeplorableBigot 20 years from now, I don't think today's music will be considered good :(

  • @WinterWineStudio it's not even good now.

  • @WinterWineStudio Sure it will. And here's what I mean by that: sure no one's going to be giving a damn about Katy Perry or Lady Gaga (no matter what you might think about their music, they just don't have staying power). But it's worth pointing out that a lot of crap got filtered out of the 80's by now, and that we all KNOW what the great songs of yesteryear are: even if you don't like Dark Side, we all know that it's a classic. But it took years to sell that many albums. So too now in 2012.

  • @WinterWineStudio what about arcade fire and all those wonderful indie bands like summer camp or mew? i mean yeah shit like nikki minaj will be considered as much shit as it is now but today there's still plenty of good music to enjoy

  • @DeplorableBigot you couldnt said it better yourself......."CRAP"....!!!

  • @DeplorableBigot Thats why it was called new wave!

  • @DeplorableBigot How old are you anyway faggot?

  • @doyme22 Old enough for your mom to bust out her knee-pads, bitch. Now fetch me a lemonade like a good boy should.

  • @DeplorableBigot "Crap" in the 80's will never be as bad as now haha

  • @DeplorableBigot Yes I have no doubt it was. The same will happen to modern "modern crap" as well, the better songs and bands will become accepted and represent the "good old days" and the bad will be ignored so people can say that "pop was better when I was young".

  • The music was really cool, but these music videos are just too silly. lol

  • is this new wave?
