Question the whistle of this engine did they ever change it? or is it the Audio from the 1980's? Because since I was Three I have constantly checked out Steam To Los Angeles that shows both 4449 and then 8444 no again 844 and the side by side Cajon Pass. this was recorded in 1986 i think. Anways, the whistle for the 4449 sounds more high pitched and song like and I fell in love with it. and now. I see videos on youtube and it sounds different... so did they change it... I ramble, sorry.
I recorded this video in June of 1984 when the Daylight was going thru the Antelope Valley in California on it's way to Los Angeles for a stop before it took off to New Orleans for the 1984 worlds fair in New Orleans. As far as I know it was the original whistle there is a police escort with siren going down the hwy along side of the tracks to stop cars from going across the tracks before the train came to the crossing. As far as I know it is the original whistle.
i know eight of the shasta cars were on the eureka southern/northcoast railroad/ northwestern pacific in northern california. five are in willits california. but all look horrable. two of them were set on fire a few years back.
Too bad that they don´t make such excursions anymore with the 4449 pulling exclusively matching Daylight cars! It really doesn´t look good when the Daylight striping is interrupted by another car in another paint scheme.
As I can see here most of the cars seem to be of the Shasta Daylight origin. Where are they today?
I just realized that this video description says the vid was shot in June of 1984. That means almost exactly 25 years to the month after this video was shot I shot video of the RIngling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus train passing through the Antelope Valleyarea in this vid.
And also 25 years almost to the month after this video was shot I shot video of this same SP Daylight steam engine in the state of Michigan. Amazing.
CoastStarlight11, After seeing your video of the RB&B&B circus train I looked around at some of the other videos you have. You sure did follow the SP Daylight #4449 around the country. The Daylight is one of my favorite trains. Thanks for the invite.
Very hard core. I shot video of this train at 11 different locations across the state of Michigan when it was in Michigan for the 2009 Owosso rail fest. Vids are on my youtube account.
@RathbunDan That reminds me of earlier that day chasing her from Fleta (after the helpers cut off at Mojave ) and what ensued racing down Sierra Highway at 75 MPH leading the pack of fans until Rosamond, how the hell did the CHP allow that is beyond me!
When you shot that scene my dad and I were at my late grandfather's house to let him know about (wished he tagged along with us that day) and caught back up to her when she was nearin' Ave. S!
RathbunDan, you have captured #4449 and her train in all of its power & majesty!

@chico4449 Yes since then 4449's whistle has been changed, SPS700 now sports 4449's old whistle

To see it run from SF to LA and back in daylight colors is the ticket of a lifetime. Fingers crossed.

If I remember right The Hiway Patrol was racing from intersection to intersection to make sure they were clear for the train.

I think you mean Highway, not Hiway
ThomasRivette 2 years ago
Yes, that is what I mean.
RathbunDan 2 years ago
@RathbunDan I did hiway on purpose because of the limit to characters you can use.
