From what I see on this footage it does not look like this kid is all spun out. Also, some of these comments here brings a few things to mind such as trolls, sociopaths and stuck up pigs.
@M4000D - great point! but, is it kind of strange...that she might had arranged a hitman to kill his murderer and planted the exact $10,000 dollars in his pocket when they tossed the murderer's body in a reservoir?
Despite the crass predictable garbage some have written here, this is a touching film because when you consider this kids place in rock history and all that 'day the sixties died' & ' the end of the hippy dream' cliches, for him to be in a paupers grave, forgotten apart from in the rock annals & history books is quite sad.
@dieyoubastards ...and then the honky hears about it, wishes it was him that had the balls to do such a thing but since it ain't, runs to you tube to scream "NIGGER". It's always some faceless cowardly snow flake ape setting his ppl back hundreds of years.
@brotherhood302 nono, it´s not a nigger thing -- it is just putting things right -- that green jacket nigger wanted trouble, and he got it period -- and then it´s the stones´ fault ? HÄ??!! --- if the "niggers" had brains as big as their balls, they´d rule the world like hell -- but life doesn´t work that way, and funnily it is the "snowflakes" that rule, hun, sorree...))
This films existence is important because it reveals the one individual, Meredith Hunter, to be the one individual whose senseless death also brought financial wealth for both the Rolling Stones and the Meysles Brothers who made Gimme Shelter. Alan Passaro, The Hell's Angel, went free after murdering Meredith Hunter. Meredeth's Mom, Altha Mae Anderson, settled out of court with the Stones lawyers true. She received very little of that money. Let's remember to look deeper before dismissing!
7:36 "I imagine that for some people it is so traumatic, they just can't come back", or, some people are just a p.o.s. mother who prefer to piss away the 10k they got by suing the rolling stones
@anarchiaetpax what a load of bullshit, yes, you do deserve to die the instant you pull out the big gun you brought to a peace and love concert and say you're going to kill someone, that's a death warrant right there
@quaxk Peace and Love: Marty Balin of the Jefferson Airplane was knocked out and off stage by a Hells Angel.
Audience members were beaten up with pool sticks during the opening of Santana's set earlier that day. The Grateful Dead walked out without performing as a demonstration against the Hell's Angels day long attacks on the audience. Peace, Love and the instant you protect yourself against a gang of armed bikers is a declaration of a death warrant? A very dogmatic observation.
Funerals and gravestones serve no other purpose than to help the survivors deal with the loss of a loved one. Everyone deals with it their own way. Don't judge.
it would have been nice to focus less on the funeral dude, (i.e. no need to hear that he was away in the military so doesn't remember, etc.) and more on trying to track down and actually speak with the people who did know him, and who do remember him...
@BrickLaneBetty you are right, despite the fact that i clearly state in my comment that i know everything about filmmaking, you are so right. I don't know anything. what's the difference in cost, bricklanebetty, to add to the dialogue of Meredith Hunter's life/death vs. just talk to some random funeral guy and not add anything meaningful to the narrative of his life? please educate me....this film could have also spoken with the current operator of the back hoe that digs the graves, too.
@justinchina sorry, It was not my intention to pejorative. tracking down people, getting clearance to use their names etc and then hiring a film crew is thousands upon thousands of dollars. As Hunter was so young when he died, few most likely remember much today (he would have been 60 today-this day) The cemetery director has spent more time around Hunter than anyone else has and he was in Nam which is very poignant. Any way, he has a headstone now due to the film.
@justinchina If you do some searches there are a few interviews around with his family. His mother just died recently and two of his siblings are are also deceased. His mother kept a shrine to all her children and needless to say had mental health issues. His sister who is a Montessori teacher in the Bay Area still grants interviews. The Times of London even tracked down the girlfriend who was with him.
@tommocoyle He was spun. Have you ever seen someone hopped up on speed? Give a speedfreak a gun, and put them around a bunch of bikers that have been beating people away from the stage all day - guess what happens? Someone dies.
Q_Q the hippies saw someone die, just like was happening every single day in Vietnam. There is nothing remarkable about this dude, beyond the fact that he made an epic stupid decision which cost him his life. Does that mean he deserved to die? No.
@anarchiaetpax don't forget this, as you stated "stuped dude"s senseless death brought millions of dollars for the Meysles Brothers film Gimme Shelter. It made the Rolling Stones into certified "BADBOYS OF ROCK." Yes, and it cost no one anything to get so much publicity except Meredith Hunters life and his family who received no residuals from the Meysles or the Stones. The compassion? I wonder if people would think twice about their insensitivity if this had occurred to an Anglo-Saxon.
@pachacutti Oh yeah, play the race card, act like it made a difference that Meredith was black.
A) a man with a gun was about to shoot a man protected by Hell's Angels
B) lethal force was used to stop attempted murder.
Would you be crying up a river if someone had blown away a potential school shooter? How about Dimebag Darrel's murderer? If your mother was about to get shot in the face, would you be decrying an intervening party from depriving the assailant from killing her?
@anarchiaetpax Thank goodness - the piece of shit that killed Brother M suffered and die much more tragic In 1985, Alan Passaro was found dead, floating in the Anderson Reservoir with $10,000 in his pocket. Reat in Hell you piece of shit.
If one we're to type in "In Defense Of The Hell's Angels - Rolling Stones Altamont" one would see that it was Meredith Hunter's intent to murder Mick Jagger, in cold blood, while high on speed.
Say and/or infer anything you want about the Hells Angels, in this film, but, the fact remains that Meredith Hunter HAD A GUN, in his hand, while running to the stage, with the FULL INTENT to shoot and kill.
According to THE LAW of this land, lethal force is FULLY JUSTIFIED to stop lethal force.
i've been wanting to see this for ages...thanks for posting....

1. Don't hire Hell's Angels for $500 in beer to be security. Just build a $400 ten foot tall stage. (1970)

This movie did motivate people to raise funds for a marker. Meredith Hunter has a headstone as of 2008.
