She was white, And lived near Blufton, AR, in a small town called "Pumkin` Town" Back then it was what she needed to do to make some money for the family. She worked with both Black & White folks and after the day was through they would cook a large dinner and eat together. She had lot`s of friends who she worked with she loved like family! You can blame white people for this, but I think the blacks need to take some initiative and help progress their communities. Slavery has been around since time began, it did not come from money it came out of laziness (Robert Wagner/ Civilization of Man). All races of every order at one time or another had slaves, what makes America different is how our Constitution was written and the hipocracy that it showed. In the first chorus it sounds like she is saying "put my onto the sleigh." I've tried to figure out this line for a long time. "Under the clay" would make sense. But it doesn't sound like that in the first chorus.

Blacks may have had slaves in Africa, but the circumstances were different. They didnt try to strip away a person's dignity and humanity by treating and defining them as sub-human and setting up a society in which privilege is based on skin color. The slaves brought to the Americas were treated like that because whites wanted to keep them under control and exploit their cheap labor for economic profit.
