I never even considered that G'mork might somehow represent an evil religious force. I think it's pretty bleeding clear that he's meant to stand in for people's general lack of imagination. He pretty much outright SAYS that, for crying out loud. Maybe there's some religious connotations, I concede, but I hate it when folk try to force their spiritual views into just about anything.
This isn't a Real World. it's a Call Fantsey Some PeopleThink it is a Imagination. I Know This is Discrumtion. To Religion Well My Opinon about This Movie. Does represent Everything. For Expmble. Harry Potter. Everybody Thinks it's a Witchcraft. Why Can We. Talk About This Movie.Well it's The Turth.
@deveraux009 But hasn`t that lack of imagination and hopelessness existed in humanity since time began so why would it only be a threat to Fantasia in our own time period.... I get what you mean though about what the Nothing is, it had no form that mere mortals could recognize and that made it really effective.....
@deveraux009 I think G'mork does work for Satan like a demon sort of. He said he was a servant for the "Power behind the Nothing". This "Power" can be thought of as Satan and the Nothing is more like a result of Satan's Influence during a particular period in human history, which just happened to be the time that Bastian was reading the Neverending Story.
Who knows, maybe greed, selfishness and Hedonism was corrupting modern society and dumbing down the general public, loosing their imagination.

"...Because people who have no hopes are easy to control, and whoever has the control, has the power." Sounds like what is going on today. ;^)

@Tryzon True, but there will always seem to be religious connotations to anything that is presented as good vs evil.

Gmork does NOT represent satan or work for satan......"The Nothing" represents and constitutes people's lack of imagination in the real world.

Gmork works for Satan, the lost of hope and religion, he preys on the weak. Very scary stuff.
