every day, i seriously consider the idea to redesign military uniforms into clone uniforms, hand them all a laser gun and send them light years away ( that won;t matter we broke the speed of light ) and well become the galactic empire. If it is like other lasers of this class then on a clear day with low humidity it would be extremely far (almost line of sight). The actual range would probably depend more on the targeting system than the laser which is almost certainly classified.

a .308 costs less than $1 to fire, .50 $5, both less expensive to fire, manufacture both the round and the gun. Both have a LOT less chance of malfunctioning, both will kill you. Space ships in the future will be a lot like cubes with thrusters on each side for maximum maneuverability, Able to turn 180 degrees in a split second. when they fire you wont see any beam at all. it will be completely invisible. There is no dust in space for which light can reflect on. The dog fights will be very short from very big distances. If your interested in this google it :P Just don't get disappointed.

You see light from stars because the photons (light particles) are flying directly to you. but you cant see the beam of the sunlight. If you did than the space would illuminate. It would be a very bright place.

A light beam occurs when photons reflects from dust particles but there is no dust in space there fore no beam. You can only see the lasers dot at the target but you cant see a beam. If you want to ask more PM me.

Since a green Laser is a frequence doubled IR Laser, you have a quiet more interesting instrument if you remove the krystal that doubles it. You also have a lot of more power than. But even with this wavelength, wich is much more usefull to melt metall, you still have the problem of focussing and you will be def. not able to focus it on a satelite or a plane ^^
