Why are they treating negative numbers as if they're some special kind of number? They're not special. Adding a negative is the same thing as subtracting a positive. But no, teachers must overcomplicate it with number lines and what not.
I learned an awesome model today at an interview, of all places. The "as compared to" model for subtraction. Take "7 - 2". This can be read as "7 as compared to 2", which leads to an answer of "they are comparably 5 apart".
It also works for subtracting negatives! "7 - -2" can be read as "7 as compared to -2", which leads to an answer of 9 since 7 and -2 are comparably 9 spaces apart!
I'm surprised that with his baggy saggy shirt he isn't smearing up the marker-board.
It's sad how low teachers go these days to get students to like them, going so far as to dress all urban hip-hop! My God what has this country come to! No wonder why our children don't learn!
@Wabaanimkii i kno this is a little late, but i want an answer out here for other ppl w/ similar questions. the way i learned was that when there was 2 signs next to each other, cross them out. if the 2 signs are the same then its a positive. if they are different, its a negitive. -16-17-18+10. hope this helps!
why, do you all suck at acting. your in front of a camera, not a frikin gun. loosen up dude, and btw, its pretty simple... add 5+5=10... add -5+5=10 take away the one and get 0
... 65? lol just move the -80 to the right of the 145 so it is +145-80 maybe its easier if u quite don't understand... And if u just say it because the line would be huge... lol
What you need to do is pretty much the same thing. There is a love+hate method. Love is positive, Hate is negative, Love to Love= positive. Hate to Hate is positive, Love to Hate is negitave, Hate to love is negative, so the answer for that would be, -193+225=+32 because since the bigger number is a positive then the answer would be a positve. You are practically subtracting the numbers. BTW im a 7th grade 12 year old, im just here bc i have a final 10/14/08!!!!!! Im so freakin nervous!!!
Also, I believe when the signs are different from each other you subtract, and put the (-+) sign whatever the largest signs is! . . . . . . . I think!

What if you have 3 numbers instead of 2
PyscoPathicPanda 5 months ago 4
@PyscoPathicPanda simple you just add the first two then add the sum to the third
rockers213 4 months ago
just remember to add them with the same sign just add them then affix their common sign
for different signs you subtract the numbers by their value regarding the sign and the sign of the bigger number is to be copied

nope. if you leave the number blank, people will know that it is positive. But for a negative, you have to add the sign.

If you love to love, that is good. (positive x positive = positive)
If you love to hate, that is bad. (positive x negative = negative)
If you hate to love, that is bad. (negative x positive = negative)
