Why are they treating negative numbers as if they're some special kind of number? They're not special. Adding a negative is the same thing as subtracting a positive. But no, teachers must overcomplicate it with number lines and what not.

@Wabaanimkii i kno this is a little late, but i want an answer out here for other ppl w/ similar questions. the way i learned was that when there was 2 signs next to each other, cross them out. if the 2 signs are the same then its a positive. if they are different, its a negitive. -16-17-18+10. hope this helps!

nope. if you leave the number blank, people will know that it is positive. But for a negative, you have to add the sign.

What you need to do is pretty much the same thing. There is a love+hate method. Love is positive, Hate is negative, Love to Love= positive. Hate to Hate is positive, Love to Hate is negitave, Hate to love is negative, so the answer for that would be, -193+225=+32 because since the bigger number is a positive then the answer would be a positve. You are practically subtracting the numbers. BTW im a 7th grade 12 year old, im just here bc i have a final 10/14/08!!!!!! Im so freakin nervous!!!
