This songs speaks of the horrors of war, not the validity of its motives. It speaks of the individual level of thought. It does say that war is cruel to the individuals who fight it. America got into many wars due to Cold War tensions. Problems in the Middle East go farther back than World War I. I have not witnessed slavery, I have seen men paying debts via physical labor, which in its own right is not slavery. It is a man redeeming his honor through paying off his debts.
