@grazianism I think the other two just tried a little too hard to incorporate their own styles into 'blues' phrasing. Eric just has the true taste for blues.
mmm como que satriani mucha pose el estaba para hacer mas bases que improvisar los solos stevie falto grabarlo mas =S hahhah pero se siente tu tocada y eric fue el mejor en el escenario =D
Three great musicians playing great music, the music speaks for itself, so just enjoy! Opinions are for those who don't know or don't play so keep them to yourself, less you look the fool.
I love the blues, play guitar, worship stevie, jimi, buddy all those other guys...but I also love these guys and lets be real, every solo was sick, and each one of these guys are legends...show respect, sit back and enjoy some of the greatest guitar players to ever walk the earth!
Surprisingly enough Vai plays some mean blue licks here. Totally unexpected of him. Great guitarist. But my mean preference is still Eric Johnson. Kudos to Satch too. I haven't seen all G3's, but I have a feeling this is the best by far.
Johnsson is too smooth on this track...I mean hendrix ripped it. Satriani is the only one commented by timmons and others to have the ...most albert king phrasing of all!!!
@JasonWb007 hes the best at playing bizzare insane whammy bar stuff that makes no sense. Vai's solo stuff isnt bad. Id just rather listen to Cliffs of Dover. And satriani is obviously the best overall.
Wow. Tone is irrelevant? I agree that debate over which guitarist is better is trivial and is all a matter of opinion, but tone, volume, attack, muting, etc.. all play a big part in each guitarist's overall sound. Tone matters my friend. Anybody can lay down a barrage of notes, but making them sound good is what separates the great ones from the "school girls".
@jmgx6 Not everybody can afford 2000$ amps with 200$ pedals that just compress sound, to other people practicing is more important.
Most recording studios give you that "great tone" either way.
But, look at all the trouble eric johnson, paul gilbert, joe satriani etc go to get "great tone". They still aren't as famous or rich as guitarists that chug power chords, or guitarists that don't know much.
A guitarist really needs good notes, but tone is really irrelevant to a listener.
@FenderBENder0002 Because he was talking about tone, and tone costs money... Money is irrelevant yes, but does being the "best" really matter that much in the long run....
If i where a musician i'd like be a good musician, but i'd like being successful too. But then again "success" is subjective, so i guess your gonna have to make up your mind on what a "Good" guitarist should have.
My point is that tone should be irrelevant when your a great guitarist. Your notes should be speak not your $.
@Jamsessionroom1337 LOL, tone is more important than anything. The fact that you think tone is something studio can give you pretty much proves you don't know what you're talking about. great tone comes from a player's fingers, it's part of their overall technique.
Tell that to the kids with 15watt MG and Spider III amps and way too much distortion.
This performance could not be reconstructed on poor equipment. Guitarists still need fine-tuning and the backing of a good band. Although I understand where you're coming from. The equipment is not the creator of the music. It only augments what is already there.
@Nameless742@Nameless742 Sorry, but equipment is overrated. Good guitarists can sound good on cheap pawn shop gear but crappy guitarists still sound crappy on top of the line gear. Tone starts with the sound the string makes when a guitarist strikes it. Better technique = better tone. Start with bad technique and you get bad tone that no amount of expensive equipment will fix. Steve just looks like he's going through the motions.. Lol, not a huge EJ fan, and Satch really looks like he's enjoying it. Seeing as how Hendrix was a huge influence on him. He can play anything.
i love how every note eric plays sounds soo clean, like every note fits. but i also love that fuckin dirty thing joe does here! its like my ears are having sex!
all in all i love joes part the most, because he is not trying to show how fast he can play, unlike the other two.
im sorry but erics vocals are simply to weak to do this song justice .this line up had the potential to deliver something memorable , but the creative spark is not there , it s pretty good but not in the same league as say clapton /allman key to the highway collaboration
Who's the best? C'mon- get real- each personality, style, and interpretation kik azz. Speed when it counts, sustain when its needed, and look at how they feed off each other! If I was the Bass player/drummer, I'd thought I'd died and gone to heaven. How about taking each on the individual merits? There's a reason they toured so successfully!
Not taking away from Johnson's vocals; pretty dam good for a white guy. The thing about having this calibre of players is you don't need vocals when these guys' guitars do the talking.
Satriani and Vai are great, and that's a fact, but lets be honest, Eric Johnson is the only one who can play a top quality blues here. In my opinion, the only two guys who could play this song the way it is supposed to be played were Jimi Hendrix and Gary Moore. I'm not saying that others are bad, it's just that Moore and Hendrix were able to play it like no one could, but that's just my opinion...
@kostaVHjovanovic You're probably right, that came out wrong. I didn't really mean that they were the only ones. There are probably others who could play this good, SRV would probably be able to play it great if he was alive, or maybe Clapton, but Moore and Hendrix, I have never heard a version better than theirs. And about Satriani and Vai, I like some of their stuff, and I don't think that their blues is bad, because blues can't be bad, it's just that I've heard better. And tnx for kind reply.
@Klempo92 i know that all opinions are different but you heart is in the right place and you dont bash other guitar players and respect other comments, you get a like from ever time dude :)
@Klempo92 I agree, but there is only one problem. Its not that EJ isn't good but, he is always playing the same scale. And after listining to that for 1 year i begin to hate that. But you're right... SV is not realy a blues man. JS is not bad but still not a real blues man.
I love how losers on the internet love to put down artists who have more talent than they could ever have while they're hiding behind a computer screen. All three are amazing, but Vai is my personal favorite.
This is the combination of guitarists that can kill anyone. Personally I do not feel the tapping/whammy that Vai uses really flows with Blues especially this song. However I do feel that they are amazing musicians in their own ways. Amazing song and performance i must say
Must we make everything into a discussion? I really enjoyed watching this video and personally like Johnson the best, but still, these guys aren't competing with each other. They are having a ball playing a gig =).
with blues less is more look at BB Via's solo was horrible Clapton would have killed this lol Via and Satriani where both trying to out do each other at 5:30 onwards i bet Eric was in the middle thinking i could kill you both
Wow... without words after seeing (hearing) this. Vai and Satriani doesn't suck at all, but it's clear that this is not the most appropiate style for them to play.
I like how you can tell how long some people have been playing just by their stupid comments. Sorry guys there really isnt a 'best', guitarist. It just boils down to different flavors at this level.
@pantalones222 As are Vai and Satriani. No-one can truly discern the emotional motivations behind any other person's music. Or anything else that they do, for that matter. Such judgments certainly don't have any place in intelligent arguments, in any case. You don't like Vai and Satriani, and you do like Johnson. That's fine. Other people think differently. That's fine too.
The section from 5:00 where they all go at it, Vai looks lost and makes a mess of all of it, stupid noises and bar abuse, satch stole it for me with his quiet piece and the awesome keychange at about 4:50. just my opinion.
wow what a great rendition of red house...and whoever said that vai and sach aint feelin somethin while playin this,u obviously got hearing problems...and i also play a gibson es 335 and i love the blues..id be happy if i where half as good as these guys..but if i had to chose my fav of the 3 from this vid, i like eric j,s playin the best but they all rocked!!!
kERRY KING OWWNNS THIS SHITTY ASS GUITAR PLAYERS! KERRY IS BETTER LIKE BY A MILE. IF YOU CANT ACCEPT THAT THEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT MUSIC IS. KERRY DOMINATES THESE DUDES I DARE SOMEBODY CHALLENGE ME TO SAY OTHERWISE.
@HImynameis303 ....? your kidding right? not even close to the same genre, you can't even compare them, the only way you can judge that is who can play eachothers music, and i don't think either of them can play the other style, so theres no way to really judge "better"
@HImynameis303 HAHAHA that was the funniest joke ever, seriously , kerry king is the ugliest satanist wannabe guitarist one planet. You, know, to be a good musician you need to play music, not random note with maximum distorion.....
i guess steve and Joe you just have to be there to understand why it makes sense to have that kinda over cleaned up over-compressed ready for metal tone... but whatever floats the boat i guess, never liked ibanez, and others for slow bluesy tone myself.
I think that Satch did the best job solo wise.. it's about how you play the beast.. Satch allowed ample time breakes in his licks and had awesome dynamics in his playing. I say that Satch and Johnson kicked Steve's hine end.
The rest of us guitarist go to Guitar Center and pump out some Metallica or GNR covers when we wanna test out a guitar or amp. I wonder what these guys would cover......
why is it that all three of their tone sucks so bad? satch's is ok but you would think guitar "gods" would pay more attention to what's coming out of their amp.
None of them are good blues players... they sound is always coverd by some very heay distortion or insane delay, thats not what the blues is about, just keep it simple. None of them feel the real blues, they have too much focus on the technical site of blues. They are not bad guitar players, but they have many things to learn when it comes to the blues. As Willie Dixon said " The Blues are the roots; everything else is the fruits"
@hendrixgeek None of these guys had the "insane delay" thing going on. That really makes that comment sound way too ignorant.....And the distortion is part of what creates they're tone. Before overdrive, things were totally clean. Players of that time thought that a tiny bit of drive was wayyy too muddy. Blues can go anywhere, it's about the FEEL. Joe feels it. Eric feels it. Vai at least gets it. It's they're own take.
Eric Johnson, right guitar, right tone, no feeling. Vai and Satch wrong guitars, wrong tone, all feeling. Eric, you're fired!

OMG, to be there must have been wonderful!

Johnson gives Vai the dirtiest look at 6:20 it's hilarious!
CForsythe26 9 months ago

@HImynameis303 yeah man there's so much evidence of jerry king being good....
give me one thing he's done good?
sweetchildonline 9 months ago
@HImynameis303 ....? your kidding right? not even close to the same genre, you can't even compare them, the only way you can judge that is who can play eachothers music, and i don't think either of them can play the other style, so theres no way to really judge "better"
evanreidel22 9 months ago
@HImynameis303 all 3 of them dominate king dude. are you being for real?

@HImynameis303 HAHAHA that was the funniest joke ever, seriously , kerry king is the ugliest satanist wannabe guitarist one planet. You, know, to be a good musician you need to play music, not random note with maximum distorion.....

TJPDiddly 10 months ago
@TJPDiddly fuck u steve is fukin amazing but u have to play guitar to understand,, if u do play guitar, shame on u
sdevon90 10 months ago
i guess steve and Joe you just have to be there to understand why it makes sense to have that kinda over cleaned up over-compressed ready for metal tone... but whatever floats the boat i guess, never liked ibanez, and others for slow bluesy tone myself.
boonexy 10 months ago
eric johnson ftw
heyjay74 10 months ago
I think that Satch did the best job solo wise.. it's about how you play the beast.. Satch allowed ample time breakes in his licks and had awesome dynamics in his playing. I say that Satch and Johnson kicked Steve's hine end.

In a Satriani / Vai world, Eric Johnson is massively underrated.
He does seem to keep himself pretty low key though.
johnnyhala 10 months ago
why is it that all three of their tone sucks so bad? satch's is ok but you would think guitar "gods" would pay more attention to what's coming out of their amp.
TheEasybeat 10 months ago
Johnson rules, what a perfect tone!
zapatinirUlEz 11 months ago
None of them are good blues players... they sound is always coverd by some very heay distortion or insane delay, thats not what the blues is about, just keep it simple. None of them feel the real blues, they have too much focus on the technical site of blues. They are not bad guitar players, but they have many things to learn when it comes to the blues. As Willie Dixon said " The Blues are the roots; everything else is the fruits"
hendrixgeek 11 months ago
@hendrixgeek
so true...
Tripodesalomoni 11 months ago
@hendrixgeek I think Eric did a great job.....agreed on Vai though, he kinda did his own thing there.
marshalladdict96 11 months ago
@hendrixgeek None of these guys had the "insane delay" thing going on. That really makes that comment sound way too ignorant.....And the distortion is part of what creates they're tone. Before overdrive, things were totally clean. Players of that time thought that a tiny bit of drive was wayyy too muddy. Blues can go anywhere, it's about the FEEL. Joe feels it. Eric feels it. Vai at least gets it. It's they're own take.
marshalladdict96 11 months ago
@hendrixgeek eric johnson knows the blues son. hes got texas blues running through his veins.
1288dallas 10 months ago
@hendrixgeek Well, I don't know about you but I know I'd chow down on a tasty fruit over a dried up root covered in dirt ANY day of the week..
