@mizeurasia10 Handbrake is a program where you put a dvd into your disc drive, and it will burn the dvd onto your computer. Isquint changes the format, so if you have an .avi file, and you want to put it on your ipod, you can convert it into a .mp4 file.

VLC isn't really needed. If you download the DivX codec for Quicktime then AVI's and stuff will play perfectly fine on it and quicktime is far superior to VLC player.
