fact: at age 14 just one look at this cover art, plus hearing this song, was downright TERRIFYING. second nature now - but once upon a time heavy music, mainly because of its vocals and artwork, actually scared me.
@MegaTimc1 Yes but when you listen Mercyful Fate - Mellisa, Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations or Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing you just understand that first 3 Metallica albums didn't just came out of nowhere.Yes we wouldn't listen Merciful Fate without Metallica but Metallica wouldn't exist as we know them without these bands so...some "justice for all" metal sake here please
@MegaTimc1 agreed man, metallica might have lost their way but once upon a time they were the baddest asses on the planet and made some of the finest metal ever written. The opinions of people who slag them off are worthless.
@MrDR7no Alice in Hell by Annihilator is a much better thrash metal album then Master of Puppets in any shape or form. Then we have the Spectrum of Death by Morbid Saint which way better and Epidemic of Violence by Demolition Hammer which is much better, another example is Eternal Nightmare by Vio-lence and the list goes on and on.
@EverxOpeningxFlower as i mentioned earlier....blah....blahblah....blahblah. I have the utmost respect for KD, but there's a reason Metallica only did parts of MF's songs. Those are the only parts of the song that mattered. It's that, and then it's just KD saying "ah" and "no" for 3 minutes at a time. And yes, I understand James reflects this particular pattern post-Justice album, saying "yeah" or "jayah" after every line.
@demma961 Yep. Of all the rifs people try to compare this to, 2 Mintues To Midnight is THE closest, bar none. If anything, that would mean Iron Maiden borrowed this and sped it up. This song was recorded in '81, and Midnight was released in '84 on Powerslave.
@TempleOfInanna2 even before this song was officially released, other bands have also used this same riff, or at least one very similar to it. Saxon ("Power And The Glory"), Anvil ("Tease Me, Please Me"), Accept ("Flash Rockin' Man"), Riot ("Swords And Tequila") and Raven ("Seek And Destroy") all use some variation on this riff, at the same speed as "2 Minutes To Midnight." I'd even say "Seek And Destroy" and "Hit The Lights" off the first Metallica album variate on it slightly.
@demma961 That riff is actually one of the most common riffs in metal history. Listen to Stand Up and Shout by Dio, or the middle section of Electric Eye by Judas Priest.
@ianazailet some people wouldn't agree with you...but yet it depends on each opinion :) I think it has that riff melody, but also there is a riff used in Swords and tequila by Riot...Maiden's song was the first thing that came in to my mind ;)
@demma961 nothing wrong with hearing a riff and getting inspired by it! Happens all the time. rock-n-roll wouldn't be anywhere without it!!!!! Rock on brother!
@demma961 as a guitar player, it not's really the same.. but there are a few riffs sound off the same type of melody... and this is definitely really close... but in the end, both bands went with different approaches to the full songs lol.
@demma961 in the related videos area there's a video called "The most ripped off heavy metal riff"...a lot of bands use that riff so check out the video...I like this version of the riff the most though
fact: at age 14 just one look at this cover art, plus hearing this song, was downright TERRIFYING. second nature now - but once upon a time heavy music, mainly because of its vocals and artwork, actually scared me.

It's coincidence. Maiden, Venom, Mercyful Fate, none of these bands were looking to sound like anyone else but themselves.

@MrPecesco Just shows that one band influenced another band, and if not directly, at least by coincidence.
