YESSS!!! I couldn't agree more! I was shocked to hear how many people wanted to change things in the books...I mean COME ON!!! Write your own damn books if you want different stories!
I feel the same way! I love talking about what I like and don't like, but I love the series as a whole and wouldn't want it any different because that's how JKR intended it to be.
It's a butterfly effect :-) and I wouldn't change anything about the books. Though Grawp was not a favorite part for me either, I totally see his importance as a plot device in book 5. HP is such a huge part of my life that I don't think I would be the same person without having read all of them and loved them for what they were.
Oh you made me smile while I sat here tracing Hogwarts House Crests to start making my Cross-House Crest Tee's, while loading Wrock on YouTube to listen to.
yay!!! someone else who has a similar outlook on life to mine!!!! i believe that you have to love everything about something, the good and the bad...and at times, be able to laugh at how stupid something about it is. sure defend it, but that doesnt mean that you have to claim its the most perfect thing ever (example: family)
I'm so glad someone else feels this way! I don't love 100% of all the books, but I love each one and every part for what it is. they are not flawless, but JKR is brilliant. This is why I would hate to see an 8th book. I love canon for what it is. I love books because they can't be changed. If we all changed what we wanted to, Harry Potter would not be the same.
(Maybe I would have liked for my wife to have found the same enjoyment out of the series that I did - but that's not changing Harry, that's changing the effect he has on people so I guess that sux as an answer too).
But if Grawp wasn't there, Hermione's plan might not have worked, and they wouldn't have made it to the Department of Mysteries, and Harry wouldn't have found out about the prophecy, and Sirius wouldn't have died, so Harry wouldn't have learned that you have to MEAN Unforgivable Curses for them to work, and he might not have been able to accomplish getting the cup of Helga Hufflepuff, and he wouldn't have been able to kill Voldemort without all the Horcruxes.
@AubNoelle No, remember? The centaurs were mad at Harry and Hermione for bringing Umbridge there... they would have captured them too if it weren't for Grawp showing up
@TotallyTscopeTV That would be true if in the books Hermione's plan involved Grawp. It only did in the film version of OotP. In the book she was just walking into the Forest trying to make a lot of noise so the centaur's would intervene and if the centaur's didn't eventually intervene she would have led them straight into Aragog's layer.
@thomassholan7 But Hermione knew that the centaurs would come; she intended it. When they were in the forest before, the centaurs said they did not harm the innocent, aka children, so she assumed that they would let them go a second time and just take Umbridge. But she was wrong, so if Grawp hadn't coincidentally showed up, the centaurs would have at least attempted to capture Harry and Hermione as well, so they would need a Plan B, but they didn't have one.
Quite a long answer. I wish every critic who reviewed my film had this same "Let's embrace the flaws" attitude. I love HP, but I certainly don't think it's perfect.
directors need to stop changing the movies!!! i mean i know they want to make cooler effects and stuff but still, it just makes me feel so uuggghhh you cant change hp

I think its debatable that if someone other then Joe went to a publisher and changed the book a lot of people would be really really mad.

Not cool young lady. I thought this question was just for fun. Nobody really wants to change anything and we know it wouldn't be possible anyway.
But thanks for allowing us to dream.

Even if you only change ONE thing in the book, you have to change the whole story line!

@stampsme Not necessarily. Mike Newell turned Hermione's periwinkle dress pink, and that didn't change the story. :P

What I want to know is.
HOW. HOW did Hagrid's mother and father... I mean...
Grawp is HUGE. Hagrid is big, but Grawp is HUGE!
So Hagrid's mother was also HUGE, because she was a joint.
"Picked me dad up by the neck and put him on the dresser" is what Hagrid said his mother could do to his father.
THis means Hagrid's father was small. A big human yes, but tiny compared to a giant.
What was going through JK's Mind?!
But yeah, I wouldn't ever change anything, butterfly effect is dangerous.

@TotallyTscopeTV nah. the centaurs could have been the whole start and end of that plan. they had it covered.
