The bad TV recording and the good voice recordings -suggests that the VCR was picking up a signal BETWEEN the telephone signal and the TV signal. It simply receives a signal - PERIOD - where it comes from - the VCR does not care!!!!!! For example cordless phones today are between 7.0 and 9.9 Mhz and the TV was probably at 10 Mhz - and the VCR is monitoring 7.0 -10.0 Mhz - for the VCR and picked up the phone signal!!!!! It happens - RARE but it does happen!!!!!

I had the same thing happen in the '90s under the same circumstances (tuned in between non-cable stations). People talking on or listening to their messages with a cordless phone that was not 9 mHz.

This probably happened because in the late 1980s the government recycled a lot of old ham radios, and used the parts to make things like t.v. antennas. They stopped doing that after several of the antennas started to pick up the cb radios of truckers, and families would over hear their crude conversations.
