  • i was suprised alexander sang his part with molokov up the octave. sounded very nice. although for his last line, i don't see that point in jumping the octave in mid sentence

  • Norm Lewis <3

  • I adore Sutton but she isn't as good as Kerry Ellis

  • ewww fail on mant parts! The arbeiter missed so many words! Stay with the actual script!!! and they changes parts of the music. Keep it as the musical was written! The only good thing was groban and Pascal except he should not be playing Walter

  • was this before RAH? i'm a little new to this whole musical, but i own chess in concert...

  • yaaaaaaaaaaay sutton foster!!!!

  • why is the arbiter american? he is brittish. and why is molokov american? he is a bloody russian!!! i dont care whether you're professional or not, you need some bloody authenticity

  • @B8ers10 It's a benefit concert, not a proper production, so I don't see why it matter so much.

  • @B8ers10 In the original concept album The American was played by a British guy and The Russia was Swedish, this way you hopefully get the best performance possible. not to mention, Josh Groban is clearly American and doesn't even attempt a Russian accent either.

  • @Pandammonia Yeah, but that's the thing, it was a concept album. looking back, maybe i was a bit over angry :P but i still think the arbiter cannot be american - the whole point is he's impartial so unless they can do a great swiss accent, english would be the easiest :P and i'm a groban fan but think he slaughters Anatoly. I don't know if you saw the tour recently? Guy playing anatoly was a guy called Daniel Koek, stunning voice, but they got accent coaches, made the difference

  • Omg!!!!! IT's RAUL ESPARZA!!!!!!!

  • They missed the best bit, where Anatoly responds to Freddie's confrontation (in this one it wasn't even Freddie who confronted him). That's one of my favourite parts in the RAH recording)

The end bit where they all come together is awesome =) I love Groban and Pascal's performance, and the replacement for Idina is good, but Kerry Ellis is undoubtedly the best Svetlana. Sutton is good, but I think she went a little overboard on the vibrato, imo.

  • @Nandika92 i agree! i repeated that part in the RAH version over and over again

  • Augh, I LOVE Norm Lewis so much. I wish he was in the RAH cast.

  • Comparing this with the RAH version i honestly think Julia plays this better than Idina. I wouldnt have picked either of them for this role, but Julias vocals somehow work in the 'edgy' version of Florence. Sutton though, is no match for Kerry- especially in this song. She doesnt have the same ferocious vocals or power in her voice that Kerry has. And Kerry brings a certain amount of passion to the role too. Sutton is sweet though, good, just not AS good. imo.

  • @purplebarbies I think they both sang it in very different ways: Kerry expressing Svetlana's anger and Sutton expressing her pain. I think they're equally wonderful, but I prefer Sutton's vocals.

  • @4:16 what is groban doing?

  • dancing? :)

  • lolol

  • i loved the adam pascal/groban cast in london EXCEPT.... i wish sutton foster got florence instead of idina... i mean i love idina wiht my whole heart, but she just wasnt really a florence... and kerry ellis ROCKED

  • ok it doesn't make sense that Freddie is singing the duet bith with Molokov before he goes and talks (sings) to Anatoly....I prefare the royal albert hall version where Walter tells Freddie to talk to Anatoly....it makes Freddie more sympathetic cause he's been 'used' by both Walter and Molokov unlike in this concert where it seems he's ploting with Molkov....plus this version is somewhat shortent from the deal/no deal of the concert in the royal albert hall or at least it seems like it.

  • yeah theres a dvd i bought it

  • Is there any sort of recording or DVD of this concert? I just got into "Chess" thanks to the Royal Albert Hall concert, and stumbled onto this looking for behind the scenes stuff for that. This cast sounds amazing, and I kind of wish Raul Esparza and Norm Lewis had been at the 2008 concert!

  • according to wiki there's a 'boothleg' recording of it that used to be floating around somewhere.....I dunno how accurate that claim....is apart from that no I don't think there's any recording...best stck with the 2CD royal albert hall concert or the DVD of that - sorry.

  • Who's the guy playing Walter de Courcy?

  • Jonathan Dokuchitz. He's amazing.

  • Sutton was good in this, you can see a little fear in her when communist is talking to her and theatening her. Also, you can see that there is a part of her that would like her husband back.

  • sorry, I *hope* that helps lol.

  • I think the lyrics here are:

Who'd ever guess that no one makes the moves intended till the game has ended then they say I told you so.

And I think in the RAH 2008 concert the lyrics are:

Who'd ever think it no one makes the moves intended till the game has ended then they say i told you so.

I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure these are close to correct. Nope it helps.

  • thank you! It does :D

  • What are the lyrics at 8:43-8:52? I've listened to the Chess in Concert CD a few times and can't figure them out.

  • this is such a stellar cast

norm lewis, sutton foster, adam pascal, julia merney and josh groban.

  • AND Raul Esparza :-) Sry im just a little obsessed with him lol.

  • its murney not merney!

  • I agree this is an amazing cast...was this release on a DVD?

  • It's coming out on Dvd?!?! Where did you hear this?!

  • The concert they did in London is coming out on DVD. It's Idina Menzel and Kerry Ellis instead of Julia Murney and Sutton Foster. I'm not sure of the other cast members.

  • the concert was on PBS last night

and idina menzel was by far the worst part

she is deff not a florence

and julia murney is just SO much better

kerry ellis was totally upstaging her the entire show

  • I was really disapointed to hear it was Idina's concert that was coming out on DVD...I really hoped it was going to be Julia...

  • Idina wasn't that bad...it just Julia is 200% better. Both Kerry and Sutton is just are amazing as the wife.

  • I greatly disagree. idina I think was amazing...but again, we both have opinions...neither one of us are correct lol

  • Amazing, I can't wait for it to come out on DVD in 2009, XD

I wish I could have seen Julia had been cast as Florence though, she's incredible, =D

Out of curiosity, who riffed it off at the end? Was it Sutton or Julia?

  • Julia. :-)

  • haha, julia's amazing, =D

  • Does anyone have this Audio version? I accidently deleted all of mine when I was getting rid of old songs. *feels sad now*

  • I think this prt is the climax of the musical, i love it! And they're very good.

  • Ahhhh! i love Raul Esparza<3!

    hes fantastic here,

i wish he had been in more than

    just these couple [or one?]

    performances.. :/

  • i cant find the lyrics to this song anywhere.

the lyrics that come up for The Deal are

    'Communists, democrats' that one.

i cant find the 'Where you want to be'

so ive had to use the lyrics from the song 'Where I Want To Be '

and change the I to you.

anywone help me? to get full lyrics

    x

  • i love svetlana's part 1:52 onwards.

she has a great voice :)

I love kerry ellis doing this part too.

    x

  • The look Josh Groban has from 6:45 to 6:50 is so sassy...he is like "reeeealllyyy...yea no." It makes me giggle. :)

  • Uhh.. that was in response to deeajones' comment that Sutton was miscast. :P

  • What version of the show is this from?

  • u can get the full swedish cast singing in english on cd its very rare! but i have it try internet!

  • The fact that there is no CD recording of this is essentially criminal.

  • I know! It is necessary for my life to continue that Julia's Nobody's Side be obtainable on CD.

I know they're coming out with a recording from the 2008 London concert, which is great, but why wasn't this put on CD as well? I like Kerry and Idina, but... not the same.

  • pssst, search "Chess concert" on Pirate Bay.

  • Woah, Raoul Espenza doesn't have a Binder with the lyrics he's good. And everyone else does! lol

  • This sounds really good.

  • Josh Groban was such an odd casting choice...

  • Yea but he's got a gorgous voice. I'm so happy for him. I love him so much. So adorable and beautiful.

  • Yeah, it made me a little nervous when I heard that he and Lara Fabian were playing main characters- I thought it would just be famous faces to sell more tickets, not a good performance of Chess. I was pleasantly surprised by Josh's acting, and his voice suited Anatoly perfectly.

  • i LOVE julia's facial expressions from 4:40 to about 5:00

  • is there a video ANYWHERE of this song in the benefit concert? someone posted pretty much the whole concert on google video, but this song is left out :(

  • Please post More I Like this Production very much. :)

  • I've never seen Julia where she hasn't been amazing...she gives me goosebumps

  • Go HOME.

  • Soooooo amazing! Julia at the end killed.

  • Thank you for all of your clips of rehearsals. I love things like this. It's makes me respect how hard they all work!

  • HOLY ESSSSSS! Did anyone but me hear Julia at the end? It was AMAZING!

  • amen to that.

  • Do you mind uploading One Night in Bangkok and any other parts with Adam Pascal? That be fab thank you!!

  • Thanks so much for all of these. Please keep em coming. I love how relaxed they all are. Groban's much the better for it.
