Like 2011, 1989 is the year of the revolution! People protest against the Communist regimes. All are successful expect Tiananmen Square mass protests. China's gov't cracked down the protests!
@thelonelyspanishboy I was a member of the US delegation; I can answer questions you might have. There was a Spanish delegation but I didn't personally have any interaction with them (there were MANY people there from all over the world). It was one of the best times to visit North Korea because the sheer number of foreigners meant that the security people couldn't keep a tight watch on everyone; we could take the subway and walk around town.
I would have given anything to have attended. I know many socialist states, patrons, are gone, we still have the entire globe (esp. friendly progressive countries) in which to grow the Festival tradition and make it stronger, even amidst imperialist/capitalist encirclement. It makes festivals like these all the more necessary.
no, i didn't, but it would not surprise me since they are pulling off pretty much the opposite of what is marx' idea. could you name a source for that? i would really like to know more about this fact. thank you very much!
aahhh Socialistic dictatorship. The only place where the government kills people in the most inhumane way such as sticking a shovel up a girls vagina and still be able to not call it murder. You got to love that country my friends!!!
Well these videos are interesting to say the least. I'm confused though. Does anyone know what it's really like for the North Korean's who live there? You hear that it's actually awful and all of the cheerful tourism videos you see are staged. Or maybe they're actually happy? I'm just trying to learn more.
it's very different from the western nations. ordinary north koreans are taught foreigners are evils. and so they're afraid to talk with them. it's like china before 1980s. i don't know if today's chinese are happier than those days. nk has much harsh nature (it's freezy in winter, also mostly mountainous) and tough society. but people there seem to have so much patience just as much as the south-koreans have, too.
Talk about being naive. NK was kept alive by the less bankrupt then communist countries from CEE Europe, which supplied them with goods and never got paid for any of it.
BTW, last time I checked communism never fell in the NK - the present misery is communism in its purest form.
OMFG Thank u so much for posting this vid...Im in tears as I write this as I am the one holding the Australian Aboriginal flag in the video. My late mothers house burnt down and I lost all my memorabilia from this event. All I have is one strip of negatives left. My name is Ben Williams and I was in the YSL
hey Ben, i remember you from the festival -actually I have some footage of you playing the didjeridoo (just 10sec or so) at the Aus delegates concert - I'll put it up ASAP. BTW glad to restore some memorabilia from that fantastic experience for you!
I'm in the US. I was invited to attend but was very young and my parents would not consent to that, my father being a Republican and all... I would have loved to go. PLEASE post more footage of the festival. WFYS still exists around the world even in the absence of the Soviet Union; as you probably know, the festival was last held in Caracas Venezuela in 2005. A small meeting was just concluded in Hanoi Vietnam.
Its more an international conference/festival for socialists, so it's only held in socialist countries (but is open to/appeals to any group of similar political leaning, regardless of the political climate in their own country)
amazing. how did you get this film? i really want to watch more about it.
the true reason they organized this festival was that seoul held 1988 Olympic very successfully as a second host city in Asia after Tokyo. North Korea at that time they was jealousy about it and then made huge festival can be against Seoul's Success. However they spent a lot of money to do that, and then they collapsed totally. many experts said that 1989 youth festival in north korea might be the last properous moment.
Thanks for your interest onoro. I was one of the Australian delegates to the Festival, and have at least 2 hours more footage - I'll probably put some more up soon.
Not sure to what extent it was a response to Seoul '88 though - the International Festival Of Youth and Students is also held (in a different "socialist" country) every four years, and North Korea would have been designated the 1989 host quite a few years in advance I'd say.
seoul was nominated to be the olympic host city in '1981', and north korea took that festival after it. of course Olympic never be on the same lever with that festival. however there were not another ways for north koreans to be against seoul olympic but that festival.
No doubt it cost a huge amount though, which DPRK could really not afford, especially as this was only a few months before the end of the Cold War, and the end of economic support from Russia.
