  • I have an ibook g3 and it can't play avi files so how could it have ever played a dvd

  • Comment removed

  • WHAT DELL IS THAT????? PLEASE HELP PPL!

  • OMG a modem!!!

  • 6:40 ...Who holds a laptop like that?!

  • Isn't his voice a bit different here?

  • Is steve jobs using microsoft powerpoint?

  • @priyonjoni At this time, he was using Concurrence. After 2003, he used Apple's Keynote for his presentations.

  • @SomeWhiteNerd i should have noted that i was sarcastically asking

  • `Who cares wether you have an optical drive? You know.... you can actually install programs onto your Macbook Air from DVDs or import CD's through another computer's optical drive, I'm not kidding! Anyway, the future belongs to downloads. See, as much as I'd like to, I nearly never use the drive inside my Asus K53, so it just sits there, adding some bulk. Not cool.

  • Rip jobs ....question can I add 100 or 250 gb hard drive to the g3 ?

  • since when was 1299$ afordible?

  • Built-in, no, NO.

  • Steve obviously changed his mind about optical drives (esp after advent of itunes)

  • RIP Optical Drives

  • How come Steven Jobs sounds SO different here?

  • I thought the guy at 2:50 was writing all of this down on his iPad. Oh how the times have changed.

  • I still use this

  • Tough crowd. They must have been speechless because they were so amazed.

  • Notice how nobody applauded when he showed the design :P

  • So Mac used to be compatible with games?

  • @MrOblivionLP It still is. People who are say Mac can't play games are REALLY ignorant.

  • @vajksziget7a Yeah I know that it've features to run games and stuff like that now :) Both some ... thing I don't recall the name of which kinda runs windows in the background? Parallel or something like that? (Don't hang me up on it), but also dual booting :)

  • "We think people need optical drives." lol

  • Eee, that's when Steve Jobs had hair. RIP Steve Jobs

  • can anyone tell ma why apple computers dont have fans but still dont overheat???

  • @highguyontour The crowd was shown them and one member asked about the fan, in this particular presentation, the fan is apparently well concealed. Sony's PS3 has one big fan facing the bottom of the unit

  • @MetallicBill yea, but i mean today, too. the macbookpro doesn't have a fan, does it???

  • @highguyontour Steve Jobs is noted at insisting the original Mac doesn't have a fan, and it needed one to use a HDD apparently. Back in 1984, what Hard Drives were there for Micro computers?? He's made a poiint that noise on an Apple is a bad thing, and clutters appearance so this is funny to note about the Dell, those DELL fans are really efficient on their laptops and there's space for one in the middle rear that serves to cool the GPU card, but not always mounted in the chassis

  • @highguyontour of course it does!

  • R.I.P. TO THIS GREAT MAN

  • @Dragonilm Why would he have to? The module laptop is a stroke of APPLE genius, coming from DELL! haha

  • @McDonaldsDude The Inspiron 8000, in fact, has all the features he's claiming iBook G3 has, so it's not a good comparison if you know the model!, it's a 15inch uXGA display!!!

  • @peterthethinker There's a difference between DVI and HDMI, HD MI is intended to carry FULL DIGITAL AUDIO and video, DVI is not, and it's also not protecting digital content as demanded by the video companies

  • RIP Steve, I use Dell rather then Apple, but I also had two Compaq EVOs, and still SFF EVO, for Dell, 12 is Netbook size, where you don't have optical built in. I've had a number of Dells, using Module batteries and drives, you can add two batts in the same laptop and use those same module slots!

  • Funny that they wanted CDroms in there laptops then but now they want them out RIP STEAVE

  • Most things use at that time, still using at my macbook i7

  • i feel bad because nobody claps when he says the specs impressed and he must feel like he failed

  • Comment removed

  • look in that time they say: ''We think people need optical drives'', and now they are killing them!

  • @tomitofazzio How are they killing optical drives? not so. What they are trying to abandon is Firewire, a mistake since 800 speed FW is not taking off as it should. USB3 is taking it's time as well. The Inspiron Steve is comparing to is actually the Latitude C800 compatible one, that is 14.1 inch with MODULE and optical all available, even Firewire on that model!!

  • 2:46

Look at them taking notes with a pen and paper. If you watch any of the newer apple press conferences, nearly everyone has a laptop

  • i have one and it hauls ASS

  • It would have been funnier if he just threw the Dell laptop on the floor.

  • @LinuxTux37 How, it's not as clunky as it looks, that particular model is larger because it has optical and is bigger screen, in fact, it has more features then Dell's CPx which lacks Ethernet, additional ports, etc. Still uses 14 inch screen and module bays that allow many options, even a HDD caddy additionally

  • 7:30 Wait, did he say the screen was delicious?!?!?

  • "We think people need optical drives."

    Oh, how times have changed.

  • U got served

  • My dead iBook had a bad smell It happens with all iBooks?

  • @MACROLIDO94 Smelling something burned/overheated? I still use Dells, but I'm on an Acer now. Steve Jobs gets more credit then Steve Wozniak, which is not quite right if you ask me

  • WOW! THE IBOOK WAS BULLET PROOF?!

  • apple was always ahead of its time

  • RIP MacBook

  • @aGneea11 don't you mean iRIP MacBook

  • @aGneea11 Education customers that I work with can still get them. I work in the Digital cinema industry but mostly consumer and education (Gov ed) installation.

  • @aGneea11 macbook was shit im not a hater coz i have imac

  • @whatthefudge2009 oh well i have pro and i love it. :))

  • @aGneea11 i love apple but the normal macbook was shit to be fair

  • @whatthefudge2009 I got on board with the iBook when they introduced the 1Ghz G4. That was the game changing device.

  • g4 was backward step cuz the g3 had longer barrter life

    g3:7.5 hours

    g4:5 hours

  • @TheMapsp07 but who really uses an optical drive anymore? i know i dont, i watch movies through netflix, listen and download music through itunes, i dont need to burn cd's because i have an ipod, dont need to burn dvd's because i can send whatever movie i download from my mac to my tv. i download my applications through the mac app store, plus drives just take up space that could be used for battery, and it waists battery to move the mechanics inside it.

  • @txprodigy95 Wow, you sure used a lot of "I's" in everything you wrote. Just because YOU don't use an optical drive doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't. I wish you armchair tech geeks would get off your high horse and realize that not everyone moves on in the world of tech as fast as you do. I don't know how old you are but I'm sure you've got some old stuff lying around that you don't see necessary to upgrade just for the sake of keeping up with "what's the latest".

  • @macuser5555 @txprodigy95 point taken, im 16 and i have an ibook 500mhz that ive fully upgraded that i take back and forth with me to school to take notes and present my presentations. and guess what? the cd is dying (im sure you dont need me to explain why). most laptop optical drives are used for blu ray now other than that i dont see a use for it but for older programs (which you could use an external optical drive for). oh and most gamers download from steam now.

  • @txprodigy95 You young kids don't have respective perspective, me thinks, Optical won't be obsolete ANY time soon

  • @MetallicBill sorry but they already are, just like the floppy drive, the optical drive will suffer the same fate.

  • dam he looks like he ages 20 years in 10years, guess thats what happins when u buy a mac lol

  • @luca20yo That happens when you suffer from pancreatic cancer!!!

  • @OliverLovesIt guess thats wut happins to people who use apples instead of linux haha

  • @luca20yo You are so immature it's sad...

  • @OliverLovesIt i dont meen harm it just goes to show money cant fix everything

  • i got a 500 mhz, 256 mb ram, 15 gb hdd, cd-rw, with a working battery from ebay for 41 dollars. i love it, its actually pretty fast on the internet. im using it right now. :)

nice to know apple holds up 10 years later. i plan on keeping this ibook in my backpack once back to school.

  • @txprodigy95 Hey, the Dell Inspirons and Latitudes also hold up ... They used Tualatin CPU Pentium 3, then with Pentium 4, jumped to 2Ghz level, with C640 and Inspiron 4150, 4100 is a C610 with Tualatin, but basically the same appearance, All use module bays

  • The pcs were more power full that time and the more high end pcs had more extras than macs

  • Was the first iPod also introduced at this event?

  • @ibatonio no.Ipod was introduced in october 23rd.This was febuary or april.

  • i think i saw an ethernet-out on the dell notebook. :o

  • @Petterrific YOU DID! perhaps, I recall having one with issues, he's got there, a 14.1 inch Dell Lat C800 model similar, I think Inspiron 8000? Not sure but they basically match, that model has optical, module bay, and Firewire! That's why it's as big as it is, look at them shown side by side....clearly not the spec one he mentioned, which is CPx model??

  • Wow, apple has really let the mac go. I think macs are still better but I mean look at those charts!

  • @bwillwall oh and he called the screen delicious XD

  • i love my ibook g4 i still have it and it works but it has a crack on the side but it is way off to the side so i doesnt matter

  • antennas are gay

  • Steve Jobs still has the same remote XD

  • ah so much sales pitch going on :) amazing salesman and passionate about his product.

  • Steve had a cold! :O

  • @superbub1 Yes. 64MB came standard built on to the logic board on the entry G3, while the other had 128MB built on. The Hard Drive, correct me if i'm wrong, started at 10GB.

  • Steve jobs got real old and skinny fast in only 10 years

  • i am remembered for ibook G4 Education for high school but i decided 2006 selling ibook and now new macbook with intel core 2 duo 2.0ghz without nvidia graphics card

  • dell got burned!

  • i feel shame for owning the dell...

  • @ditorox You should! Kidding.

  • @ditorox Why?? I don't. He won't say what Michael Dell said, but remember, Michael Dell started his business in a college Dorm in Texas IIRC, and Gateway started up out on a farm out of a barn I read. Anyway, Michael Dell was more a builder, he didn't engineer the hardware, it was built for Dell to put their name on

  • It's really funny how he's saying people need optical drives and now he's saying you don't need them anymore. Funny how things change.

  • No, No.

  • i could listen to him talk all day

  • for education ibook for school right?

  • Not even one person cheered.. No "ooh's or aahhhs". Having watched ALL keynotes, this was one of the worst.

  • @bneyens Because he cheated, bringing out the wrong Dell machine to compare, it's not a match to the specs he used, I have a Latitude Dell LS, that's 400 to 750 Mhz Pentium 3, the one he shows is Tualatin P3 at about 1.2Ghz!

  • wooow that's old

  • Mac and packard bell are better

  • @dragonmaster9288

    Packard Bell is non-existant.

  • Dell are assholes packard bell and mac book pro

  • 2:45 lol paper..

  • For the Inventor of iMovie, this slide show really BITES.

  • thinkpad x series-epic.

  • "we think people need optical drives" if he knew he'd say the exact opposite 10 years later

  • 500 MH3 :O :O ... Oh, 2001

  • iPad 2 is thinner than the LID of this iBook!

  • jesus, look at those prices!!!

  • Thinkpad owns all! XP

  • I swear, it looks like he is going to drop the iBook a million times! It scared me LOL!!!

  • I've watched this video about 15 times. Every time, I think he's going to drop the iBook at 5:49

  • @fightfairfightfair why the fuck are you watching this 15 times?

  • Fatties.

  • apple, dell compaq and ibm thinkpad??

  • Hard to think put that was ten years ago look how Tec has gotten better

  • For some reason I want to buy one of these right now, I don't know why (it's also 10 years later), but Steve sold this like a motherfucker!!!

It could be a steamy pile of poop and I'd buy it...

  • macbook air... amazing...

  • Meh, I'd love to buy one of these to use as a backup PC. People want so much money for this old shit -_-. It's ridiculous. Just because it's Apple, doesn't automatically make it worth 456045670937$.

  • It seems every time his products get lighter and slimmer so does he...

  • no handle??????

  • The Matrix!

  • woah he had hair!

  • dude apple as always been like 300-400$ ahead of everything

  • @TheMilkMan252

    Still pretty awesome

  • @TheMilkMan252 lol More like twice as much as everything.

  • @TheMilkMan252 Actually, their first computers were cheaper than competitors.

  • @TheMilkMan252 It really depends whether you're comparing them fairly. People like to gloss over things like the battery life, the build quality, and the screen resolution. Also, sometimes people will say "Yeah, well mine has 4GBs of RAM" but they forget to mention the fact that they usually have lower speed DIMMs, or the fact that their hard drive is a slower rpm speed (that is...IF it's a hard drive and not a solid-state drive). So be sure to compare them fairly, you'll be surprised. ;)

  • @mario54671 you can upgrade memory, GPU in some cases, and CPU on laptops, people forget USB available optical, etc. Many ways to make them useful 10 to 15 years on

  • @TheMilkMan252 dude apple has been about 3 to 4 years AHEAD of every one

  • @donniethemacwiz no... just no...

  • does steve jobs ever change his cloths?

  • You haters. MacBook Air comes 7 years AFTER that. World changes. And so in 2001 people need optical drive. But today people has no need of it anymore. We have digital downloads. That were not in 2001. So SJ is perfectly right today as in 2001. And this year (2011) Apple is going to eliminate optical units from ALL its laptops line.

  • @AngelChildxxx

So much for people who enjoy older software.

  • @mattmurray07 uh?

  • @AngelChildxxx So how will I go about ripping CDs, watching DVDs, or playing games?

  • @Tubey60 Today is all about streaming and download. I don't rip a cd since years. DVDs: I watch them on my iMac or at home on my TV (and BTW you have digital download or streaming). Gamers are 1% of the market so I think Apple has to look to the majority of the market. Also: you can always buy an external drive. I absolutely want Apple to eliminate optical drive from every of its laptop.

  • @AngelChildxxx I own a lot of CDs and vinyl records and all of my movies are DVD. External drives make my workspace seem cluttered. I don't use cable television, let alone Netflix streaming so that's out of the picture. My father flatout refuses to buy a MacBook Air simply because it lacks an optical drive. Apple isn't looking to the majority market by removing optical drives. People have thousands of dollars in software, physically, and rebuying makes absolutely no sense.

  • @AngelChildxxx maybe 2012

  • wow thats amazing, the retina display is better than both dells and compaqs notebooks.

  • "we think people need optical drives, so we build them in".... right..

  • @Xylo23 Yes, then a few years later, WE DON'T BELIEVE IN OPTICAL DRIVES! MACBOOK AIR HAS NO OPTICAL, we put install on the USB!

  • @Jk981206 and we don't even have floppy disks! fuck!

  • @metapagn LOL, yeah!

  • @metapagn I do, still, Using floppies to store text or JPEG, even movies on a Mavica Sony camera

  • Guys, this was 10 years ago. A lot a rich media was delivered in through optical disks back then because hard drives were still expensive and relatively tiny and broad band internet was still in its infancy. CDs and the then emerging DVD format were the most cost effective way to deliver big files and content.

  • @Xylo23

Their advertising methods haven't changed a bit. The best way to talk to consumers is to act like they're stupid, apparently.

  • Remember people. This was fimed back in 2001. Long before the MacBook air and when optical drives were still popluar.

  • apple has never had "crazy, ahead of its time" technology. people seem to over look the fact that this company known as apple, is a marketing-first company, they are without a doubt, the most brilliant company when it comes to marketing, these guys know how to sell their stuff, even with the iphone, people trip out, but in fact the technology used by the iphone is really anything special, they just know how to sell it, and its been working

  • "some people leave optical drives out of their notebooks, but we think people need them so we build them in" hence the macbook a..? wait. it dosent have an optical drive? umm

  • @spencersmat Yeah because people are buying less and less CDs and DVDs; everyone downloads media content through online stores and stores them on their computer.

  • epic fail in 5:13, steve say : dell notebook : ethernet = no ethernet ports.

look in this time the dell have a ehernet port !

    fail -_-

  • @lolmaniac93600 You saw a modem, not an ethernet port.

  • @DeltaPhi79 It's a different laptop he's showing physically, then tech spec wise, I know because I had one in my possession!

  • in these old videos, the audience are dead cold.

  • BUILT IN, no , no . haha cracks me up . haha

  • These iBooks are beastly. I've had two and passed them on to a friend and my brother who both use them all the time.

  • thats pretty expensive when u think about it

  • @RikiPorduction no the ibook wasn't that expensive compared to a decent dell at the time, and still is the price for a decent dell.

  • @littlejager ok but then wats a compaq?

  • whats compac

  • I went through 3 pcs in a year and went back to mac...

  • lol i didn't even know that you had to pay for different optical drives before.

  • this seems so long ago and 1300$ the ppl who bought this r prolly pissed cause they could be like me with my mbp!?!?

  • dude apple has always been like 3 or 4 years ahead of everything

  • @2cool0 No way. Give me an example

  • @2cool0 back in 2006...or whenever the iphone was made they made this insanley new techonolgy that is so crazy....not other phone has ever been like ...none has ever thought of anything like that..with all the features it had...those types of phones if apple didnt invent it there would never have been any phone like that for at least another 4 years. i mean they had a pen touch type phones but those were crap soooo low tech

  • @2cool0 They now have an iPhone that can video call without needing a contract but it sux that we need WiFi

  • @IHeartMacsH8r5 Apple said that this would last until at least 2011. In other words, we WILL get FaceTime on iPhone 4 WITHOUT the need for Wi-Fi. And than, I can finally stop looking at that stupid T-Mobile commercial that fails to bash the iPhone 4 (did a good job bashing AT&T though, which I hate, even though I live in Canada. Why am I even talking? OK. Never mind).

  • @Juniorpond They fails so bad and my brother one day was like "Aren't they copying the Mac vs. PC ad? They should sue!" I was laughing my ass of and I was in agreement with the Mac vs. PC thing!

  • @IHeartMacsH8r5 Apple didn't patented it so therefore, they can't sue. Yes, it's their idea, but it won't threaten them in any way.

  • @2cool0 not really, their "technology" has never really been ahead, they just use what they have and make it seem ridiculous... aka marketing

  • @2cool0 Yeah but at least they take their time to perfect it.

  • @2cool0 not anymore now its the oppsite apple sucks ass now
