Mike Gravel never ran for president as an independent, but rather ran in Democratic primaries, but after being ignored and ridiculed by the Democratic party, ran in the Libertarian Party primary convention for the Libertarian nomination. Today he is a registered Libertarian.

The senator seems down to earth and honest, I can see how people compare him to Ron Paul, yet he doesn't seem as pulled together as Ron Paul. Not charm but poise.
Oh, please. Comparing Ron Paul to Mike Gravel is like comparing a poodle (barking dog, Paul) to a boxer (human fighter, Gravel). They agree on one thing: ending wars with countries that aren't a threat but Mike Gravel goes further and his philosophy is different about role of military and war, in general, in society/world. Also both want to legalize drugs BUT with different reasoning behind this position. The reasons are just as important as the position.
I agree that it is a priority to leave Iraq as soon as possible. However, I think planning such a massive filibuster could turn people away from the cause and drastically decrease the productivity of our congress. The ends I agree with but not the means.
"not according to the voters. the measure of who the bast candidate is must at some point involve WINNING..you like him because he's the most commie-lib"
Oh..you mean the media.
Not according to the MEDIA
And if it involves winning, I suppose Bush can be catagorized as the best. Yes?
I've researched the National Initiative for Democracy, and find that it's sound. This would indeed put Government in the hands of people who want to affect change.
Mike Gravel has won my support on this issue and my respect as a man of vision.
I feel differently on what are founding fathers acutally wanted. I'm upset he left out Thomas Paine. I feel Paine is truly one who wanted the people tochoose while Jefferson, Washington, Madison had thier own interests at heart. They may have said power to the people while their policy reflected something quite different.
Thomas Paine actually went to France to help with their ideologis that were insired by the American revolution, other didn't cause they saw no financial gain (Washington and Paine's relationship was strained their after).
I feel the founding fathers' statement of 'power to people' is similar to the Bsh administraton statement of 'liberation of Iraqi people' or 'security under the Patriot Act'.
ummm from what I understand they were based upon the consititution of the English Empire as well taken from teh laws that governed the people of the Roman Empire. Rousseau was probably the only French influence and he was marginally so. Check back my friend.
Pwells1 get your head on straight. The French Revolution came after the American Revolution dumbass. The French took the American model, but instead of succeeding and having the leader pass on the torch, Napolean went on a rampage. Learn to...learn.
I was actually speaking of the Enlightenment period, which France was a part of. Rousseau was one person. And perhaps, yes, I put too much emphasis on the French.
2. Napoleon united France after Robespierre was an absolutely horrible, psychotic lunatic of a leader. Napoleon had nothing to do with the French Revolution. ROBESPIERRE did.
Learn...to not mix up names and to not misinterpret what others say.
vantrifan, I don't think you understand what fascism is, by god, you can't even spell it. If you knew anything about Paul's proposed policies you would realize it is the farthest from fascism.
Fascism calls for a "spiritual revolution" AGAINST signs of moral decay such as INDIVIDUALISM and MATERIALISM, and seeks to purge "alien" forces and groups that threaten the organic community.
Fascism REJECTS the liberal doctrines of individual autonomy and rights, political pluralism, and representative government.
A number of Paul's positions on civil liberties are based on states' rights, the idea that U.S. states possess certain rights and political powers in relation to the federal government. According to Paul, "States' rights simply means the individual states should retain authority over all matters not expressly delegated to the federal government in Article I of the Constitution."
It's the right of the people through their representatives to challenge any law that is unconstitutional. The State Constitution covers any law that is not mentioned in the Bill of Rights (Article 9); that does not contradict of conflict with the U.S. Constitution.
Paul's economic policies aren't fascist. There's a huge difference between libertarianism and fascism. I favor open borders, so I disagree with Paul's views on immigration.
How is going back to the gold standard, getting rid of the Federal Reserve and cutting taxes and spending fascist? Look at the U.S. Constitution. It says right in plain English that money can only be gold or silver. The U.S. fought against the British partially because the British were forcing their central bank on the American citizens. That sounds Jeffersonian to me.
Mike Gravel is fighting the good fight for us. Please...if you agree with what he's saying and doing for us, send him some money. Help make him OUR MILLION DOLLAR MAN. Thank you.
JANUARY 1ST is the mass donation day for MIKE GRAVEL!!! Everyone please donate, lets help get Mike's message out there! Thanks, and don't forget to spread the word!
With Gravel, there would be less drug use, less drug addiction and no drug war in this country or in others like Columbia. Decriminilization and more drug treatment for those who need it. What's wrong with that? Do you think drugs should be illegal? It hasn't worked.
It's what the candidate can bring to the table that matters, not their sex or their skin color. Mike Gravel has already delivered the National Initiative to the American People. He doesn't have to make empty promises to get elected.
The main issue is that Gravel does not want to run the country either. On all the views he holds ultimately he want the people to decide... he does NOT want to decide for you.
That is the function of NI4D. it will empower the people... even AFTER he is gone. But when Ron Paul or Dennis leave office, we will be back to 'politics as usual'.
Gravel has ALWAYS and is STILL ahead of the times. goto nationalinitiative(dot)us gravel2008(dot)us
In fact the amount of things he was able to accomplish during his time of service gave him recognition as the "man who can get thing done."
It's little wonder people are not aware of his record of service and that the media marginalizes hi,. They know that once people state to realize who Gravel IS... the snowball effect will be unstoppable...
You like RON PAUL? I do too... but look with a logical and clear head, and you'll realize that GRAVEL is truly the BEST candidate.
"THE POINT OF RON AND MIKE MAKING A TEAM WOULD BE THE BEST IDEA EVER". they wouldnt have to agree on every issue just enough so we take this country back from the imperialist that are making the big decitions on it "LIKE WARS", and try to live in pice and prosperity.
Wait a minute...if we had a national initiative, and empowered people to make their own laws, we might actually have to put some money into public education. And people might get curious about public policy decisions, which could lead to some awkward questions...
Gravel is awesome. Anyone going to caucus for him in iowa on jan 3rd?
Gravel is great, until it comes to his tax policy, which basically ruins everything. Kucinich in '08! His record is at least as good, if not better, and all his stances are perfect!
Gravel would be my first choice...it's too bad Ron Paul people find similarities between the two...Ron Paul doesn't realize what would happen to people who don't want to be "self-reliant." Some people just aren't prepared for that.
Even if every person (infants, sick people, elderly) were able to take care of themselves adequately, we're killing the planet with our consumerism and our technological choices. Would you seriously advocate doing more of that instead of reevaluating your free market philosophy and perhaps making some new choices?
MASS DONATION DAY for Mike Gravel is Wednesday, December 5th! Why donate? Mike ended the draft & exposed the lies of Vietnam w/ the Pentagon Papers. As president he will: Put the citizens in power w/ the National Initiative Bring peace in the middle east Bring the troops home in 120 days Eliminate the IRS & Income Tax End the war on drugs Bring equality for gay rights Universal healthcare for all Mike doesn't take money from Lobbyist & Special Interest Groups! I have to say i love Gravels amazing committment to grass roots. I could kiss this guy(though i'd assume he and my girlfriend would object). I liked watching Gravels cnn2 program with highschool students, and him laying down the law with the lack of history knowledge.

. Frankly i have been studying the german language, history, and culture since my freshmen year of highschool and was amused to be taught by mr. gravel that Bismark was the first leader to bring healthcare the majority of his people before any other state. I trust him over many canidates and would love to see him working in conjunction with Ron Paul, .
the two of them together would make a great team with Gravel and Pauls grassroots approach, honesty, and courage. I think Gravel sometimes lacks sensitivity that makes him a bit unpalatable to casual midline voters, and Pauls confidence to speak loudly back at his attackers could be much better, but the two together would be unstoppable. I like them both and i support them both. I only wish i could vote for both of them in their respective primaries.

I think Gravel is a truly honest man. But I still support Ron Paul, and I would encourage you all to check out his message. RonPaulLibrary dot Org is an excellent source of his writings and speeches.
I was totally for Hillary Clinton, but now I feel torn. This guy is awesome, but he needs exposure and commercials, as many as possible, so that this guy even exhists. I had never heard of him. We should send these videos to everyone on our contact lists.
I disagree with direct democracy. I'm a Substitute teacher who sees the quality of educate people are getting; these people should not be any where near a voting booth let alone a writing a law.
Realistically you cannot disagree that education provided by the government is deeply lacking. Creativity is not encouraged and it is becoming a conditioning station for becoming what the government want us to become. Instead of great movers and shakers of the world we are encouraged to be great followers. Thats why I teach my kids.
And our nation's education of its out-of-school populous is deeply lacking as well as its in-school kids. Our MEDIA outlets are all corporate controlled, focusing on profit and not true journalism. We are fed clues by the news, but must have the opportunity and the will to research the facts on our own. And Americans have much more entertaining options and distracting habits to keep them occupied.
Noam Chompsky talks about Election '08 and the Corporate Media Marginalization of the only 'viable' candidates Mike Gravel/ Dennis Kucinich/ Ron Paul.
It's not just pot he wants to legalize. Decriminalizing recreational drugs takes power away from organized crime and treats drug use as a health issue, not a criminal one.
he's been excluded from two major debates now, and from any semblance of real media coverage. With good reason too: Gravel, Kucinich and Dr Paul are all very bad for big business, who control the media.
If that's the case, there's obviously not much chance for Gravel, at least, to get in office; if you freak out during a debate, chances are that you've already lost.
I don't think Gravel 'freaked out' as much as called out the vapid front runners. Which is certainly not a good way to get invited to further debates either. Knowing his chances from the get-go, at least Gravel has proved effective in speaking out and voicing anger over our current FUBAR events and deceptive candidates.
Imagine what effect that will have on Prison overcrowding. If we are winning the war on drugs how come I see them all around? Decriminalizing non-violent crimes seems like a much better alternative to building another Prison in your or my backyard.
Good call MtMayon, the 'War on Drugs' was lost just like during the Prohibition era when the substances were made illegal. The criminalization itself is what allowed organized crime to take hold and prosper in American cities.
Besides, our prison system is so backwards considering the goal of reducing recidivism. The last thing we need is to show creative potheads how to network with seriously violent criminals.
This is not a decisive, well put together argument for anything. This sounds like something my compatriots would say in the schoolyard in third grade.
The only offense I have with the well respected Mike Gravel is his position on our borders. He won't put a fence even though Mexico actually gives out maps to infiltrate our borders. Ron Paul agrees that the Latino pop. are being scapegoated due to our failing economy. Glad to hear he like Ron Paul. Prez. Ron Paul and Vice Prez. Mike Gravel. Unity in one house and nothing but truth.
You think a wall will keep out illegal immigrants? You're only fooling yourself. I'd never vote for Ron Paul because I'm pro-choice. The ticket to vote for is Kucinich/Gravel. Those men are the heroes that can save our nation.
No, I don't think a wall will keep out undocumented immigrants. Our economy is bad because of the needless spending. In fact, Ron said that the illegal problem wouldn't be so bad if we had a better economy. As for his position on abortion, he believes that something as complicated as that should be left to the states. So, if you really are pro choice just pass it in your state. After all, it's MUCH easier to do so and it sends a message to the rest of the union. I respect your opinion.
I respect your opinion too, but apparently you don't respect the opinions of every woman when comes to her own body. And I agree that most federal expenditure is waste, especially the trillions spent on Iraq. However, unlike Ron I believe the federal government should have great power over the states, because states don't always make the right choices, hello civil war.
The only thing about abortion that prevents me from supporting it are the rights of the unborn. If you kill a pregnant woman you will get charged for two murders. The only times I can support abortion are in rape cases and in the worsening of physical and financial well being of the mother.
CNN has excluded Mike Gravel from their upcoming debate. Why? Because he is not worth $1 million. It's time to fight this ridiculous censorship by the mass media! Let's take our DEMOCRACY BACK!
Go to myspacecom/letgravelspeak and donate just $11.11, today on 11/11! Help Mike Gravel get into the debates! If anything, show CNN and NBC that this blatant censorship of candidates will NOT STAND! Just $11.11!
I just found this James. I am beyond impressed!

They agree on one thing: ending wars with countries that aren't a threat but Mike Gravel goes further and his philosophy is different about role of military and war, in general, in society/world. Also both want to legalize drugs BUT with different reasoning behind this position. The reasons are just as important as the position.
gravelin08 3 years ago
I agree that it is a priority to leave Iraq as soon as possible. However, I think planning such a massive filibuster could turn people away from the cause and drastically decrease the productivity of our congress. The ends I agree with but not the means.

I've researched the National Initiative for Democracy, and find that it's sound. This would indeed put Government in the hands of people who want to affect change.
Mike Gravel has won my support on this issue and my respect as a man of vision.

mmm not really. have you looked at his policies. he actually steers towards the right on many things. for example border control. try again.

TheMessageStupid 4 years ago
Thomas Paine actually went to France to help with their ideologis that were insired by the American revolution, other didn't cause they saw no financial gain (Washington and Paine's relationship was strained their after).
I feel the founding fathers' statement of 'power to people' is similar to the Bsh administraton statement of 'liberation of Iraqi people' or 'security under the Patriot Act'.
TheMessageStupid 4 years ago
Actually, you have that backwards. The American Revolution and the Constitution are based on ideologies that are French at heart.
Pwells1 4 years ago
ummm from what I understand they were based upon the consititution of the English Empire as well taken from teh laws that governed the people of the Roman Empire. Rousseau was probably the only French influence and he was marginally so. Check back my friend.
TheMessageStupid 4 years ago
Pwells1 get your head on straight. The French Revolution came after the American Revolution dumbass. The French took the American model, but instead of succeeding and having the leader pass on the torch, Napolean went on a rampage. Learn to...learn.
Neverynnal 4 years ago
1. I never mentioned the French Revolution.

PeacefulParadox 4 years ago
When a person tries to pass a bill that would prevent people from challenging unconstitutional state laws, that is fascism.
TropicofDogs 4 years ago
Fascism calls for a "spiritual revolution" AGAINST signs of moral decay such as INDIVIDUALISM and MATERIALISM, and seeks to purge "alien" forces and groups that threaten the organic community.
Fascism REJECTS the liberal doctrines of individual autonomy and rights, political pluralism, and representative government.
PeacefulParadox 4 years ago
A number of Paul's positions on civil liberties are based on states' rights, the idea that U.S. states possess certain rights and political powers in relation to the federal government. According to Paul, "States' rights simply means the individual states should retain authority over all matters not expressly delegated to the federal government in Article I of the Constitution."
PeacefulParadox 4 years ago
It's the right of the people through their representatives to challenge any law that is unconstitutional. The State Constitution covers any law that is not mentioned in the Bill of Rights (Article 9); that does not contradict of conflict with the U.S. Constitution.
PeacefulParadox 4 years ago
Paul's economic policies aren't fascist. There's a huge difference between libertarianism and fascism. I favor open borders, so I disagree with Paul's views on immigration.
Zeldovich 4 years ago
How is going back to the gold standard, getting rid of the Federal Reserve and cutting taxes and spending fascist? Look at the U.S. Constitution. It says right in plain English that money can only be gold or silver. The U.S. fought against the British partially because the British were forcing their central bank on the American citizens. That sounds Jeffersonian to me.

Frankly i have been studying the german language, history, and culture since my freshmen year of highschool and was amused to be taught by mr. gravel that Bismark was the first leader to bring healthcare the majority of his people before any other state. the two of them together would make a great team with Gravel and Pauls grassroots approach, honesty, and courage.

Realistically you cannot disagree that education provided by the government is deeply lacking. Creativity is not encouraged and it is becoming a conditioning station for becoming what the government want us to become. Instead of great movers and shakers of the world we are encouraged to be great followers. Thats why I teach my kids.
MtMayon1 4 years ago
And our nation's education of its out-of-school populous is deeply lacking as well as its in-school kids. Our MEDIA outlets are all corporate controlled, focusing on profit and not true journalism. We are fed clues by the news, but must have the opportunity and the will to research the facts on our own. And Americans have much more entertaining options and distracting habits to keep them occupied.

Wow... understanding now that he's aiming for a legalization of marijuana, as well as his views on the war, I think I may vote for him...
M4gical 4 years ago 3
It's not just pot he wants to legalize. Decriminalizing recreational drugs takes power away from organized crime and treats drug use as a health issue, not a criminal one.
kr4m 4 years ago
Very much so agreed. I however have a feeling that he won't get voted in, especially seeing as how he's been "excluded" from the next debate.
M4gical 4 years ago
he's been excluded from two major debates now, and from any semblance of real media coverage. With good reason too: Gravel, Kucinich and Dr Paul are all very bad for big business, who control the media.
kr4m 4 years ago
If that's the case, there's obviously not much chance for Gravel, at least, to get in office; if you freak out during a debate, chances are that you've already lost.
M4gical 4 years ago
I don't think Gravel 'freaked out' as much as called out the vapid front runners. Which is certainly not a good way to get invited to further debates either. Knowing his chances from the get-go, at least Gravel has proved effective in speaking out and voicing anger over our current FUBAR events and deceptive candidates.
kr4m 4 years ago
Imagine what effect that will have on Prison overcrowding. If we are winning the war on drugs how come I see them all around? Decriminalizing non-violent crimes seems like a much better alternative to building another Prison in your or my backyard.
MtMayon1 4 years ago

You think a wall will keep out illegal immigrants? You're only fooling yourself. I'd never vote for Ron Paul because I'm pro-choice. The ticket to vote for is Kucinich/Gravel. Those men are the heroes that can save our nation.
kr4m 4 years ago
No, I don't think a wall will keep out undocumented immigrants. Our economy is bad because of the needless spending. In fact, Ron said that the illegal problem wouldn't be so bad if we had a better economy. As for his position on abortion, he believes that something as complicated as that should be left to the states. So, if you really are pro choice just pass it in your state. After all, it's MUCH easier to do so and it sends a message to the rest of the union. I respect your opinion.
Tasadaru 4 years ago
I respect your opinion too, but apparently you don't respect the opinions of every woman when comes to her own body. And I agree that most federal expenditure is waste, especially the trillions spent on Iraq. However, unlike Ron I believe the federal government should have great power over the states, because states don't always make the right choices, hello civil war.
kr4m 4 years ago
The only thing about abortion that prevents me from supporting it are the rights of the unborn. If you kill a pregnant woman you will get charged for two murders. The only times I can support abortion are in rape cases and in the worsening of physical and financial well being of the mother.
