  • hmm. i thought the shinais are choose according to age? isn't that according to WKC rules and regulations?

  • you are right. the length of the shinai depends on the age. Adults use 39 inch shinais, the only exception is if somebody is doing nito which in the the long sword has to be 37 inches.

  • I'm not arguing or putting anyone down but, my dojo places a big stok in the utilization and technique while having the entire bogu donned, however during warmups we don't have the kote or men on and that is only twenty to twentyfive minutes long. But in my mind if your going to train, train with what your going to use and encounter. Iaito/Iaido, you don't have the bogu (obviously), but the sense is not that much different, Resectively. In Kendo they aren't hits or strikes, they're cuts!

  • I've been doing kendo for 2 months now and this obviosuly amazes me. The shinai looks like toothpicks in their hands!!! Lots of suburi, I'm guessing :)

  • Hey, I'm wondering, what equipment do you need when you begin kendo?

  • No equipment when you first begin.

Just bring a good attitude and an open mind!

You will be asked to buy a shinai later (a mere $25)... Armor does not come for a long time!

  • Thanks a lot! But I'm guessing in the space between getting armour you train you body and learn the customs? True?

  • Yes! Lots to learn in that time... lots!

  • Hey bud, got another question for you. How do you determine what length of a shinai to buy? Oh and I've watched some informative-type videos and it looks like you need armour relatively early in order to practice techniques. So if possible, can you tell me how far into starting you need armour? Thanks a lot. You've been helpful.

  • It depends on how tall you are. If you're over 5 feet 10 I'd say just get a size 39 shinai. Armor seriously doesn't come until around 3-6 months because of the amount of practice you must endure to learn proper technique. Are you practicing in a dojo?

  • No, I'm going to join the Kendo club at the University I'm going to and I'm just looking into getting a shinai before hand so I'm all ready to go. I'm 5'7", so how does one determine length of shinai from height? Thanks.

  • usually grown men are fit with a 39. At most tournaments your shinai cannot be weighed less than 510g, but it can be as heavy as you like. Size 39 and under seem below 510 so i would advise having a 39. THere are also mens, womens, and high school shinais you can choose from... i think this is right correct me if im wrong

  • No, your right. Thanks a lot.

  • For basics i don't think you need anything apart from hakama, keikogi and a shinai for practice at home. kendo armor is not used whilst being instructed by your sensei unless you are a demonstrator, since the armor is for sparring purposes. But that being said, sparring is a major part of kendo. So check a learning program from your dojo or something. hope this helped =)

  • Hey thanks. =)

  • I never get tired of watching this match. Fantastic!

  • as a korean, i can't say that i wasn't cheering for the korean team. but damn, eiga's kendo is just beautiful. lot of respect for the man
