That is exactly why I am watching this...excellent history...I was 6 years old when this took place. The Queen today looks in better shape than I am...
When William is crowned King, will he keep to this programme? I'd really hate to see him 'dumb down' the Monarchy, and change the Coronation Ceremony to nothing more than a few words in front of a town cleric! I'm not from the UK, but there are some of us who WANT this part of history to continue.
England "birthed" the United States, and even though we ARE our own country, the historic ties we share really ARE important to a LOT of us!!
@usblueflyer England "birthed" the United States Corporation to make more cash for the Monarchy and you are not you're own country, isn't that obvious?
@itsanillusion100 I must concur. The Charter of the Virignia Company is still in effect today. Before James I signed the Company Charter he made certain that the Sovereign was made the largest shareholder (naturally, of course). To my knowledge, that agreement has never been annulled.
@usblueflyer Time will tell. I really hope that this ceremony won´t change when future monarchs is crowned. But i don´t think this is totally in the hands of Charles and William to decide. If U.K has a socialist government when the next coronation is to take place who want to scratch the monarchy, bad things can happen.
@LilJazzer1 The song is Handel's Zadok the Priest. Written specifically for George II's coronation back in 1727, it has been used for every English coronation since.
The first part is sung at 0:04. "Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet anointed Solomon king."
The middle part is sung at 1:27. "And all the people rejoic'd, rejoiced and said:"
The third and last part is sung at 4:06. "God save the king! Long live the king! May the king live for ever! Amen! Amen! Alleluia!"
@Patrick144000 Don't you find this delicate pronunciation of words and gentle whisper rather effeminate and drippy? I am not a homophobe but I find men who do not talk like men annoying.
@sno0323 What Holy Father are you talking about? If you are referring to the two bishops (London and Durham) and the Archbishop of Canterbury who is conducting the coronation service (plus the Dean of Westminister) who is taking ornaments back and forth to the alter, no one calls them Holy Father. That title is reserved for the Bishop of Rome, and he was not at this service, even as an observer, as this is strictly a Church of England and Church of Scotland service.
@noacarmdew Well, yes, of course, physically as well as symbolically! I didn't actually mean her entire breasts, BTW, just the top portion, the decolletage, so to speak and probably just a tiny dab at that. Otherwise, she'd be under that canopy a bit long getting de-oiled for presentation! We can't have the lords and ladies waiting forever, you know. I wonder how long the entire coronation takes, or is that a rude question...?
all "presidential" inaugurations - even those of the kings and queens in Scandinavia, Belgium and so forth - look like "some junior high dance"! They're not "the original"! They're made up ceremonies, with no force whatsoever, although of symbolic meaning, a meaning too generic and too vague! democracy is what we want for our rule, but monarchy is what enhances us!
What is meant by the fact that there is no more hereditary nobility? If an Earl dies, does his eldest son not become an Earl? I knew that no new hereditary positions could be created. (I'm from the US.)
@JustJim70118 Titles are still inherited, and theoretically hereditary peers could be created, but are not in practice. The practice stopped in the mid-20th century, although three titles were given in the 80s (two of which died out with the recipients, the other being the Earldom of Stockton). For the time being, whoever inherits the title of Earl Marshal still goes auto into the House of Lords; 92 are elected from amongst themselves. Peers don't have to use their titles in practice of course.
It will of course continue, but yes, evolved, just as before-- This coronation is probably a world away from that of Alfred the Great, QEI or even that of Victoria, and so tempus fugit....
They cut out the annointing in holy oil. I've heard that this is never shown in public, thus the canopy being brought out. It's kind of a mystery, they put it on her hands, the crown of her head and her breasts. I guess that would be a little too much to see for a female monarch, but no big deal for the kings.
@artistkeith3 That part of the ceremony was considered to be important. So they used the canopy so it could not be seen on tv. Nothing to do with the fact that she's female.
@artistkeith3 It is nothing to do with a 'Queen' being embarrassed of having the blessing of her breast.
This was the first time that the coronation was shown on TV. It was considered to be so holy that it would be, in some way, perverted - so it was agreed that the most holy part, the blessing with oil, would be kept private - thus the canopy.
@meknight77 Although I am uncertain about the use of a canopy in the history of British coronations, canopies have historically been used in the consecration of a monarch.
Considering all the promise of this ceremony and at the start of her reign, I wonder if she does not now look upon her life with a bit of cinicism. This ceremony and nothing like it can ever again be performed in the UK. Elizabeth's world has shrunk beyond recognition.
@mc0558 I agree. We can thank the Labour party for the elimination of the hereditary reforms, we can thank ourselves for being weak and letting our colonies go and we can blame the good ol usa for continually degrading moral society and pulling the rest of the world down with it. Honestly the world would be a lot better off if the USA just stopped existing.
@TheArmo1 "England with its coolie empire and its democratic phrases." And I certainly don't agree that the US is a negative force in this world. Much the contrary! They were our ally in stopping Hitler, stopping Stalin and the Argentine junta. Now we're fighting and dying together to stop jihadist terrorism.
