Stone is criticized for omitting unfavorable aspects of Chavez and others he portrays. He ADMITS it's a COUNTER response to unbalanced portrayals in both the US media and domestic media there. That's the whole point. They CONTINUE to face horrible problems of lawlessness and corruption, undoubtedly. The significant gains remain largely absent while the vilification continues to be augmented with false generalizations. While Columbia a US backed state with it's atrocities is given a free pass.
Oliver Stone is a great director and an honest and charismatic person, because he always disclose the reality of what is happening in the world, is being accused of not being "patriot".....
it's interesting that he completely leaves out chavez's cooperation with iranian fascist leader achmadinedschad. also the votes were not that transparent as he puts it.
don't get me wrong. i think the move to the left in latinamerica is mainly a good thing, but every leading character in that region has dark side which is often overseen by leftists.
11:40 "They have not been corrupt candidates"? You should look into the story of Lula's son (a.ka. "Lulinha"). He used to work in a zoo, earning minimal wage. But as soon as his father was elected president, he became one of the most successful businessman (a millionaire) in Brazil... I'm not going to even mention the current scandals (involving misappropriation of tax money) involving other members of Lula's political party (including the current president nominee Dilma Rousseff).
i might go watch it again but from what i remember a good chunk of it focuses on the media in venez vs chavez. The media there was owned by the wealthy classes who lost out on US contracts, good stuff!
there is an excellent documentary on the subject of chavez made by Irish students. it won several awards including a peabody. we were recommended to study it as part of my geography course in college. Its called "The revolution will not be televised" and is available on youtube
There is any socialism in Venezuela, wake up guy, USA have corruption also, the worse kind of corruption, who are you to talk about the corruption of other Countrys, I know Chavez is not a good example, but the people in Venezuela loves him, and you should care with your governants first instead in point your finger to another. Ask Obama why he didn't take their troops from Iraq, Moron.
good on him. the u.s (not the people but its government and its controlling institutions) have a strangle hold on global politics and western media. all these coo's, corrupting officials, assasinations, phoney wars, their use of economics as a way of forcing influence is just mindblowing in its scale and how most of the western population isnt even aware of it thanks to its ridiculously biased and repugnant media, is disgusting. bravo mr stone
There is a stuff I forgot, We are used to think America is only USA, that's a great ignorant and donkey Lie, we are all Americans here, I'm an American guy living on Brazil, Mexico, venezuela, Equador, Bolivia or Mexico, we are all in the same Continent, even Canadá, so Wake up America, USA cannot rule the world, USA should think in work (since has great technology and industry), and start to think in Global Help for enviromental achivement, but Obama is Ignoring all.
basically america is the worlds love child whose become fat and thinks the other countries (or parents) are their to serve his needs at their expense. It is a 100% capitalist country which has led to 1% of the population owning 95% of the wealth which means only 1% actually have a say in america
The American Leaders keep lying to American People, and they view the South America as his gardner, and it's Not, been Brazillian, I feel very ofended by the American Rulers, we are democratics, not comunists, and yet, a lot of people in USA thinks we are just like Cubans, we are tired of the American Ignorance, and we demand some respect, open your eyes America, your goverment is still killing your youngers, creating false War, and fasle enemys, Congrats Oliver Stone, thanks for the good job.
What makes me very sad is how my white partner and other family members always defend America's honor, and say how bad south american countries are and how good America is. How bad leaders in South A are corrupt and bad, but the thing is they would never consider USA corrupt, they believe in what the media spew out even in my very narrow minded country...New Zealand
@nicolaus1990 Um...no. According to the UN Venezuela is also the only South American country to even meet the Millennium goals. You want to see a disaster? Go to Mexico, Peru or Colombia's slums.
I read the the word "Patriotic" in this interveiw and would have loved to tell Oliver Stone it is a lazy and easy patriotism that says "My country right or wrong" It is the deeper more useful patriot that says "My country is wrong I must do my best to correct this" I will be looking up the Castro film right after typing this.
It's now 00:30am and Firday's movie review podcast is STILL not available yet. What the smeg? BBC are getting sloppy, I don't see why it would take any longer to put together - it's still just 2 hours long.
What? You didn't ask him about his 1974 horror film Seizure? Other than that, great interview Mark. If South of the Border is as vibrant and informative as Comandante was, I will be first in line to see it.
"Director, Vietnam vet and self declared US patriot Oliver Stone..." come on now BBC! You are twisting things in exactly the way Mr Stone becries of the media in this very interview. He says "I don't like the word patriotic because that leads to war". Shame on you!
Stone is slowly morphing into Tony Montana, don't ya think? Or if not him, then Frank, his slimey boss who Tony kills in the room with the gaudy sunset wallpaper. Either way, Stone's becoming his own "yayo" fuelled characters!
By the way, I actually do think Stone is brilliant and will certainly see this documentary. I'm just commenting on his appearance. Very early 80s Miami drug lord ;-)
@billfenner1967 Come and live in Venezuela, people kill for a pair of shoes. Government is more corrupted than capitalist government. Everything is a shit. But people consider Chavez a heroe cause they don´t live here. Oliver´s reasons to defend Chavez is that he hates his government, but he shouldn´t say anything about the south, here is a mess. Chavez and his family´s fortune now is more than 2.000 millions dollars. What a socialism?????
@astruggia Oh, calm down. I'm sure "socialist" countries in South America are like the wild west. Sure. But to be honest, all I care about is Oliver Stone's funky moustache. It's brilliant.
I can't really trust the reasoning of someone who buys into the idea of the "left/right" dichotomy. Applying binary thinking to this conflict just doesn't seem to make sense. There are no collective characteristics you can apply to a group of people to identify them as "left" or "right", it seems to boil down to the "right" hating the weak, and the "left" hating the strong. When it comes to something more tangible, like economics or politics, binary designations don't seem to apply.
(I mean it should be an obvious point, but it is easily forgotten when you get whisked away by, for lack of a better phrase, all the bullshit of the world.)
I'm sure there is, it's going to mean different things depending on the interpretation. There are implications that I am completely unaware of. What do you think is missing?
I would love to see a wider release of Stones second documentary about Castro, called 'looking for Fidel' (I think its called that, I could be wrong). He made it for HBO anyway, after Comandante, and apparently it is more critical of Castro.
As in, Stone asks him tougher questions then the ones in Comandante, apparently.
I've been looking at a few (user generated) reviews and they havn't been overly kind to 'looking for Fidel' . Besides the odd political grievance, they generally say as a piece it is not as watchable as Comandante, and the camerawork is incredibly shaky/frenetic. Still worth a look though.
@TheDensley7 oh yeah and hes making another one. another interview. hes actually recorded it already. He'll be trying to get it shown on television. Ok ill stop talking now.

I just regained my respect for Stone
I had lost it since I find that his last films have lost their touch
Especially World Trade Center where he does NOT mention any possible conspiracy nor does he show us anytghjing at all regarding Building 7!!!
It´s conforting to see him doing something a bit deeper again
