No matter what, this is Jean ValJean for me. Colm was the first and this song was written by the composer specifically for Colm Wilkinson. It's a prayer, and Colm always sings it like one. I love him, have for years! He deserves his retirement, but just as with the Phantom, there is only one Jean ValJean, and his real first name is Colm!
So many amazing voices have been cast in the tole as Jean Valjean, each their own brilliant take. But there is only one Colm Wilkinson. He was the first and the best. The raw emotion and the power of each note is a testament to why Les Liz became what it became and endured for 25 years!
This was my favorite story when I was a little girl. I loved the character Valjean from the depths of my heart. It's wonderful to hear that character come to life by a man who really feels his story. Wonderful music.
I love stuff like this. Its like being reminded of your first love. I just saw Les Mis again for the third time. The guy who played Valjean was really good...but no Colm Wilkinson. The only one who even comes remotely close is Gary Morris from the International Complete Symphonic Recording.
bridwuguy: that`s a pretty nice story - i was in CH at the show in thun and there was a really really good and emotional singer playing jvj and i was totally impressed by him - now i`ve seen colm, i`d have to admit that the other one was good, colm is phenomenal
My mom watched the Les Miserables anniversary DVD with me. She was hooked. I would catch her listening to my DVD while she cleaned house. She saw the show.I asked her how it was she said the singing & scenery was incredible."The Valjean was no Colm Wilkinson" I laughed so hard.My wife and my mom will be going to watch Les Mis in Kansas City. I cant wait.I dream to see Colm Wilkinson & Phillip Quast play Jean Valjean and Javert I would pay top dollar. everyone would! Book an American Tour please!
Perfect. I saw him in Detroit about 15-20 years ago in this role... his rendition will always be the perfect Valjean in my book. Gives you chills, it's so good.
i agree, this is the perfect song for his voice - like the songs in Phantom, its like they're written for him. of all songs I prefer 'the confrontation' cos there you've got Philip Quast and Colm Wilkinson - both fantastic singers.

What a legend and he's Irish too!!!!. Wilkinson has a most powerful voice which truly brings a tear to even the most hardened eye.
