This is the pop equivalent of Vesti La Giubba, from Pagliacci. If you like this song, then look that one up. It is opera, of course but it gives stark meaning to the term "tears of a clown."
it's a bassoon folks, not a sax nor a french horn. Ever listen to Danny Elfman's movie soundtracks? He likes to use the Bassoon. Listen to the opening credits of BeetleJuice.
@deemarie95 I agree! Just experiencing some nostalgia, and I've loved this song, and Smokey, since I was a kid! Don't even know why it came to my mind to look up, but I'm glad I did, and I'm glad this video was posted!
This song is genius!the music and the way they added all the concepts together.Just like he fools people with fake smiles the music fools you with a happy tune.Talk about smart. What a musically inclined thinker!
I saw the score for this once. I about shat bricks when I saw the bassoon part... that stuff is HARD to PLAY. (back when I used to play bassoon, haven't touched one in about 25 years)
I saw it in either my old high school's district office or else when looking through the music library while visiting friends at their college, forgot which. I had a hard time with playing smooth in anything uptempo, I so made those sixteenth notes sound like burps or farts XD
imagin me hangin out of a sling with a twin turbine 50ml hangin off the Huey stoned as a bastard on a trip an tooting mother Asia's finest Sativa and this blasting out of two speakers flying tree top level with some cherrys loaded - Maaan I was born for this sheeeeit. lol
One of the best-orchestrated "pop" songs ever...listen for the bright opening of the woodwinds-- and the piccolo solos at the end...and the bassoons at the beginning and throughout the song. Check for the trombones...the bass keeps the song moving forward; and there is light tamborine work in the song. The vocal suspensions of the singers "oooooos" at key points in the song that complement the lead singer's voice--Motown really knew how to orchestrate a song in those days!
@saywhatsaywell you boston fans are masochists. harharhar and they're off... around the first turn its the sox, in the backstretch its the sox in the lead.... them they fall down with their tongues hanging out and their pants around their ankles.... har har har. You boston fans are big faro players aren't you. Its almost like confusing a cough drop for a suppository ha ha ha
This may be one of the most perfect pop songs of all time. Clever lyrics, great arrangement, backing vocals, smooth lead, melody resolution. Ear worm with the opening flute (?) And a friggin Oboe!!
what i love about this song is how the melody and music is so happy and cheery and up beat but if you actually listen to the lyrics its so sad he is describing how he puts up a smile but deep inside he is really hurting and the beat and melody go perfect with the theme it is genius and deep! because the music is happy but deep inside its a sad song dope
For all the dumbasses who say they don't like this song just like diddy, he was saying that he didn't like it because it hit too close to home, that the song was talking to him about his life. He wasn't dissing the quality of the song, which is untouchable lyrically and musically. It's a perfect pop song and a classic.
@jackiechampion Who really cares what DIDDY thinks? He's not worthy of licking the bottoms of Smokeys shoes! Smokey is the real thing - an original! Diddy (or whatever his name is this month) and Kanye are no talent samplers. They knows it! Wise up!
motown was the best time period for music. People during "The Motown times" lol, had natural talent, not techno, auto-tuned beats or "melodies" as voices.
So very true! Motown is one of my most favorite labels ever, and I also regard it as a genre of music. The Motown artists you mentioned as well as numerous others on the label had what it took to make great songs. All that wonderful music the artists did back in that era still sounds as fresh today as when they first came out. Classic Motown rules!!!!
@kezzkezzkezz3 Well, if it wasn't for African-Americans there would be no ragtime, jazz, blues, zydeco, rock n'roll, funk, disco, house, techno, rap...basically the entire 20th century of popular North American/European music.
@MissLivelyfe What does he do? I looked on google but it only says he's a rapper, but what is he famous for? To be so famous he must have done something worth mentioning right?
The musical track was written in 1966 by Stevie Wonder and he brought it to Smokey Robinson who came up with the lyrics. It was released as an album track in 1967. Motown UK released it as a single in 1970 and it became a big hit, which made Motown do the same in the US and it became #1 here too.
@TheBenjurman This reminds me of driving from Chicago through Pennsylvania. I can relate and just watching the road and the movement of the trucks just resonates this song into my mind with the rhythm of this song.
